Scientists were studying sea turtles(龟) in Costa Rica. That is in Central America. One turtle had something sticking out of its nose. The turtle could not breathe. At first, the scientists thought it was a worm( 虫). They pulled it out. It was a plastic straw( 吸管). The scientists made sure the turtle was healthy. It came back into the water. The scientists posted a video of helping the turtle on the Internet. When people saw it, they were shocked. The video made Diana Lofflin start StrawFree.org. The group is in California. Its goal is to make people know the harm plastic straws take to the environment. Lofflin hopes people will find some things instead of plastic straws. “Straws are not necessary for enjoying a drink,” she says. “Saying no to a plastic straw is a way to make a difference in the world.”
Plastic rubbish washes into rivers and oceans when it rains. Fish and other animals eat the plastic. It can kill them. An activity to ban plastic straws is growing. In California, it isn’t allowed for food servers to give straws to customers who don’t ask for them. Nancy Wallace works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Washington, D.C. She says schools should refuse to use plastic. Kids must do their part, too.

Raden, nearly 50 years old, started a “trash library”. She hopes to make children read more and make them know the importance of earth protection. Every weekday, Raden puts all kinds of books on the back of her three-wheeler (三轮车) and rides to Muntang village. As soon as she comes, children will run to her trash library with bottles, paper cups and other trash. They give Raden the trash and get her books without money. Raden’s three-wheeler is quickly full of the trash as the books fly out. After that, Raden carries back all the trash.
Raden collects about 100 kg of trash every week. Then she puts it into different groups for people to use it again or sell it. She is happy that children spend less time on computer games because of the books.

It’s responsible for about three percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (排放物). Then do we have to give up flying to save the planet? Maybe not.
Last month, a British airline (航空公司) operated a flight (航班) called Flight 100. It flew from London to New York with some reporters, engineers and government officers on it. There were no paying passengers. The flight was special because the plane used waste fats and plant sugars as fuel (燃料). As a new kind of green fuel, it was different from the traditional fuel and it cut the flight’s pollution by 70 percent according to the company. Some people said that the flight meant a lot. Many more people wanted to have a try on the flight.
However, there are still problems. For one thing, the green fuel costs five times as much as the traditional fuel. For another, it is difficult to make enough green fuel for all the flights around the world in a short time. To provide enough fuel for a large number of planes, farmers will have to grow more plants. Therefore, more forests will be cut down for farmland.
For now, the British airline and other airlines have no plan to provide similar flights for the public. There is still a long way to go before air travel becomes greener. But one day in the future, such flights may become common and the greenhouse gas emissions may be reduced.

This book says our world is in danger. It describes the various threats to the environment. The situation is so serious that we must do something to save the Earth.
The writers ask us to “imagine that the Earth is inside a kind of greenhouse with the atmosphere(大气层) around it. The atmosphere acts like the glass: It lets sunlight in and keeps warmth from getting out. The atmosphere is essential for all living things. Without it, the Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the surface of the moon.”
“The trouble is that our atmosphere is changing because we are polluting it with chemicals—in the form of gases—and it is keeping in too much heat!”
These gases, mainly carbon dioxide(CO2) are produced by burning fuels such as petrol. The greenhouse effect may cause the level of the sea to rise and flood cities and even whole countries.
The burning and cutting down of the forests is making the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2. It also causes soil erosion and flooding, as well as destroying the homes of people and animals that live in the forests.
Many of our habits cause pollution, especially our habit of using things once and then throwing them away. This creates massive mountains of rubbish. We do not know what to do with the rubbish and it pollutes our land and sea. For example, people throw away as many as seven billion drink cans in Britain each year. That is enough to reach from the Earth to the moon.
The book is asking us to become “green consumers”. That means we should only buy and use environmentally friendly goods so that we can save the Earth. These goods will not damage the environment.
Let’s be green consumers and enjoy living a better life on the Earth!

On March 5, during the first session (会议) of the 13th National People’s Congress (全国人民代表大会), Premier Li Keqiang delivered this year’s Government Work Report. Chinese parents often put a lot of effort and money into their children’s education. Many send their children to after-school classes. In 2016, China had about 180 million school-aged students, according to a report by the Chinese Society of Education. More than 137 million of them were taking part in extracurricular classes or off-campus (在校园外的) training.
To work out this problem, the Ministry of Education (MOE,教育部) and three other ministries put out guidelines on February 26 that call for more action to be taken to reduce ex tracuricular burdens. Their targets are private training schools that create excess workloads (过度的作业量) and pressure for students.
The guidelines are aimed at training schools which have no professional qualifications (资格) or pose (造成) safety risks, said Lü Yugang, an official from the MOE. He also said that reducing workloads for students should be a priority (优先考虑的事).

In March 2022, China Daily did a survey on topics of the two sessions to see what interests Generation Zers most. Let’s take a look.
Among all topics, “mental health” got the most votes. “Spreading traditional culture”(83%) followed closely. The top choice is not unexpected. Reports on mental health problems of teenagers have increased in recent years. The rate of depression(抑郁) among them was nearly 25%. The attention they give to mental health shows that they care for their own well-being. When they don’t feel well, they will speak out and ask for help.
Although Generation Zers are young, they understand the power of traditional culture. They believe that China is deeply rooted in traditional culture and would like to spread it to the world. Zhao Yan, a junior 2 student from Liaoning Riwan Middle School, said, “My school set up many clubs to help students understand the importance of traditional culture. I join a paper-cutting workshop and a hanfu club. I have learned a lot. I made a tiger-shaped paper-cutting. It has not only helped me practise my handwork skills but also let me know the beauty of art. It’s our duty to pass this great art to future generations.”
Instead of only care about themselves, Generation Zers also set their eyes on social problems. Kevin Xu, a 16-year-old boy from Shenzhen, told the reporter.” I care about the prevention and control measures(防治措施) of COVID-19. I’m now studying in the UK. In February, the UK government ended quarantine(隔离) rules. It means that COVID-19 patients can go out. This would never happen in China! I think China’s “dynamic zero-case” policy(动态清零政策) sounds more responsible. A country should protect its people in a pandemic.”
People seem to know little about Generation Zers. Thanks to this survey, we are able to take a closer look at “what Generation Zers care about” and paint a picture of what they are like.

The English language has a very large number of proverbs. One is “Better late than never”. This means it is better to do something late than never to do it. Another is “Two heads are better than one”. This means a second person can often help one person to do something. And “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a common saying. It means that eating apples every day helps you keep healthy. So the person will not get sick and won’t have to see a doctor.
In different situations, people use proverbs to express special meanings. For example, my son is just like his father in many ways. She went home after she finished her work. When she got home, the child was asleep. She was very tired. She was about to sleep when she was surprised to find an overturned (翻倒的) bowl of noodles under the quilt. She hit her sleeping son angrily, “Why are you so careless, making the quilt dirty? Who will wash it?” It was the first time that she had hit her son after her husband’s death.
“Sorry, but...” the child explained with tears in his eyes, “This is your supper, Mom.” In order to let his mother eat the dinner as soon as she got home, the child prepared two bowls of noodles: one for himself, the other for his mother.
