Every year, more than 26, 000 children arrive in Britain. We ask some new arrivals what they like best about their new lives and what’s different from home.
Jarek, Poland | I don’t know anybody from Poland here, but I’m lucky because the English boy next door is very friendly and kind. We are in the same class! I like teachers here. At home, the teachers seem a bit strict and serious. There are a lot of rules, too. Here, teachers are patient and don’t give much homework. We students go out of school and buy pizza or burgers at lunchtime. We can’t do that in Poland. |
Zinah, India | It’s too cold here! I hate doing sports, especially outside in winter. The teacher here is very serious about sports. I prefer science and maths. I love the maths class because the teacher is really funny, just like my maths teacher in India. The school is so big and some students seem unfriendly. I’m from a small village school. I think it’s hard to communicate with them. |
Daisy&Luck, the USA | My sister and I like living here best. It’s cool! My sister loves the British accent (口音). Everybody here is very polite. But we don’t understand all your strange words—we say “yard” not “garden” and “apartment” not “flat”. The food is better here. There are Chinese, Indian and Thai foods. At home we eat too much fast food. |

How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools, each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grades 3-5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
The Benefits Children Could Get
The study found that vegetable intake increased greatly across the year if the children who grew their own produce. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic diseases (慢性疾病).
________
Any chance to let children learn about vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest,” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned from school. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.
Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.

Ever feel sleepy when it’s time to get up for school? If you think school shouldn’t start so early, you’re not alone. Lots of scientists and doctors agree. That’s why some groups are pushing for later start times.
There’s good news for some students who like to snooze*. California passed a new law. It sets rules. High schools will start at 8:30 am or later. Middle schools will start at 8 am or later. So students might get more minutes of California dreaming.
Research shows that most adolescents need about nine hours of sleep a night. They usually get their best sleep between 11 pm and 8 am. So if students get up at 5 or 6 am, they miss some good sleeping time. Students who don’t get enough sleep can have health problems. They have trouble learning, too. It’s hard to learn when you’re nodding off at your desk!
But some people think starting schools later isn’t so smart. They argue there’s no way to be sure students will get more sleep. After all, the law can’t make students go to bed! And schools that start later finish later. That leaves students with less free time. Like what? Sports, jobs, chores, and homework. And let’s not forget fun!
Maybe another problem is buses! If all schools start near the same time, a district* has to pay for more buses and drivers. That’s one reason so many high schools start very early.
In fact, several schools outside California have a ready set later start times. Seattle Public Schools is an example. High schools there start no earlier than 8:45 am. A new law may soon be passed in Ohio. It would push back start times in that state.
How about you? Like to start school bright and early? Or would you rather snooze till the sun is high in the sky?

One day, my friend and I were riding our bikes in a park. I’d recently learned how to ride, so my mom asked me to wear some safety equipment(装备).
“No, I won’t wear it!” I said, pointing at my friend’s elbows and knees, “She doesn’t wear it either!”
“It’s dangerous,” my friend said, “You need more practice.”
“I might have learned later than you, but I can ride even better!” I shouted.
