Old people in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely (孤单).
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to help these old people feel less lonely and improve their well-being.
It is also a way to help patients with serious illness of the mind. Workers in care homes have reported a reduction (减少) in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those old people who take part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.”
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.”
“It’s good to do something different. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and the old ones come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the fun activities, and it feels great to do something useful.”
There are now 700 old people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given money to spread it countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to begin the project, said, “Old people really welcome the idea of the project. We are looking forward to the benefits (利益) and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help put people here together through a shared interest and fun activities.”

For many American 10-year-olds, summer is always a time for goofing around(消磨时光), hanging out with friends, and playing outside until the sun goes down. However, for Liam Hannon, the summer of 2017 was a bit different. That year, Liam did not want to go to summer camp, so he made a deal with his dad to stay busy and active. He joined a program to give back to the community. Specifically, he was given a task to help homeless people.
Liam pointed out to his dad that there were a lot of homeless people just outside their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These people were hungry and Liam thought he could do something to lift their spirits. Liam and his dad began making sandwiches. Together, they made 20 lunches that first week, which they then handed out to the homeless people. When the week was over, Liam realized he was not ready to put away his bread knife just yet, so Liam’s Lunches of Love was born.
“No one should be hungry,” Liam wrote on his GoFundMe page. He created the online page with his father as a way to help raise money for Lunches of Love. Donations that were received through GoFundMe have enabled Liam to buy a better cart(手推车)and make thousands of additional lunches. Liam also gets help from friends and volunteers to make and deliver the lunches. His friends love drawing pictures and writing encouraging messages on the brown paper bags that the lunches and healthy snacks are packed in. “I’ve seen people who are feeling really down. But when we hand them a lunch, their faces just light up,” says Liam.
But be didn’t stop there. Liam has another project called Legos(乐高)of Love. People send in their old toys, which are then sorted and given to children who are living at homeless shelters.
One thing is certain: This now 12-year-old knows how to pay it forward(让爱传播出去). His Lunches of Love is an example of how even something as simple as a sandwich can change the world.

Lisa likes to go to the park with her mum. She usually plays with her friends at the park.
Today when Lisa goes to the park, she looks around and becomes sad.
“What’s wrong, Lisa?” Mum asks.
”There is so much trash(垃圾)on the ground,” Lisa says. “It seems like each day, I see more trash here.”
“You are right,” Mum says. “The park is very dirty.”
“What can we do?” Lisa asks.
“I am sure you will think of something,” Mum says.
Lisa and her mum go home. Lisa draws a picture of a park and writes PLEASE KEEP OUR PARK CLEAN on top of her picture.
When Lisa goes back to the park with her mum, she takes some trash bags and some tape(胶带) with her.
Lisa tapes her picture on a big trash can when she gets to the park.
Then she hands her mum a bag. “Will you help me pick up(捡拾) the trash?”
“I sure will,” Mum says.
The children at the park run over to see what is going on. Lisa hands them bags. “Let’s clean this place up,” she says. The children pick up lots of trash. They talk and laugh as they work. Soon all the bags are full.

10 . Passage C
It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. I wasn’t happy about it. When I was complaining about it, three people appeared at my desk — a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right. “Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装)to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their charts — no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurse station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurse station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We tried to give them more than their needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas night. Later, the little girl kissed me and said, “Thanks for being our angel(天使).”
