A Lighted Lamp
These days I find an old man. He lives near my home in a small town by himself. He is very special. Why? He is blind (失明的), so he can’t see anything. However, he always carries a lighted lamp with him when he goes out at night. I go with him and want to know why he does like this.
After he has dinner in a restaurant near a park today, he walks back to his home. In the street, he meets a group of young men. They find he is blind, but he is carrying a lighted lamp. They think it is so funny and start to make fun of him. One of them asks him, “Hey, old man! You are blind and can’t see anything! Why do you carry the lamp? It’s not useful for you.”
The blind man smiles and says, “Yes, it’s true I am blind. I can’t see anything, and I don’t need the lamp. In fact, the lamp is for those people like you. You can see the world, right? At night, you may walk around me, so I hope this lamp can help you light up(照亮)your way home. At the same time, when I’m carrying the lamp at night, people can see me so they don’t hit me(撞到我). 5 . If you are aged between 13 and 19 years old, you care about your local environment. Then read on! You may be surprised to hear that you can actually get money for improving your local community.
The “Big Lottery” is giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens. We have $80,000 to give away. We’re looking for young people to take part in projects near to where they live. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors: Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch: Neighborhood watch plans are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer. You could set one up easily and quickly.
Lending a hand: There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No Littering: Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take it in turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Just tell us what kind of project you want to become involved in (参与), then we’ll send you more details. Take positive action and help make your neighborhood a better place to live in!

Meeting the Needs of Elderly People
Smart phones are a part of our everyday life now, but not everyone can use them well, especially for the elderly people. Seeing this problem, George, a 16-year-old middle school student, with other volunteers came into the communities to help elderly people learn to use smart phones. But for all their goodwill, the service had some flaws(缺陷). It took much time and effort, and more importantly, elderly people always forgot what they’d learned and the volunteers had to do the same job over and over again.
George noticed the problems and came up with an idea of solving them with a guidebook. He then formed a volunteer group called Silver Hair with seven members. It took them about a month to finish writing a book called May I Show You How to Use Smart Phones.
The group members made a survey of more than 1, 000 elderly people and talked with many of them in nursing homes and found out what the elderly people cared most about with smart phones. “How to use WeChat” topped the list as the app covers many fields of life such as chatting, money transfers(转帐)and even ordering food in a restaurant. These made up one part of the book. The other parts include the basic jobs of phones, online shopping, using online maps and so on. To make the book more friendly to older readers, George also made the pages light yellow and the characters big.
“Many elderly people are resistant(抗拒的) to smart phones at first as they are confused by so many different apps with various functions, but they are familiar with books, which can make them more willing to learn,” said George.” And besides, they can look for the tips in the book any time they need, just like using a dictionary.”
The Silver Hair members have already printed out 500 copies of the book and handed them all out to the communities. They’ll soon start working on the second copy which includes more guidance such as hospital registration(挂号) and photo editing. They also hope for the support from the public so they can print more copies and help more elderly people.

3. Which part did the elderly people like to read most in the guidebook?
4. What do you think of Silver Hair? Why do you think so?
7 . It was a beautiful day, and Lily was excited to go on a school field trip to the zoo. She had been looking forward to this day for weeks, and nothing could dampen her spirits (影响兴致). As she and her classmates walked through the zoo, they came across a group of monkeys.
Lily was attracted by the monkeys and started taking pictures with her phone. As she was about to move on, she noticed one monkey that seemed different. It wasn’t moving around or playing with the others. Instead, it was sitting alone, looking sad and lonely.
Lily couldn’t help but feel sorry for the monkey. She wondered why it was alone and why it seemed so sad. As she walked away, the image of the lonely monkey stayed with her, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something wasn’t right.
The next day, Lily decided to do some research about monkeys and their behavior. She learned that monkeys are social animals and need to be with others of their kind to be happy and healthy. She also learned that many monkeys in captivity (圈养)suffer from loneliness and depression.
Lily couldn’t stop thinking about the lonely monkey in the zoo. She knew she had to do something to help. She reached out to the zoo and asked if there was anything they could do for the monkey. The zookeeper explained that they were aware of the monkey’s situation and were working on finding it a monkey for company.
Lily was less worried to hear that the zoo was taking actions, but she didn’t stop there. She started an event at her school to raise money for the zoo to build a monkey sanctuary (保护区). She talked to her classmates, teachers, and parents, and everyone was eager to help.
Within a few weeks, Lily had raised enough money to build a monkey sanctuary at the zoo. The monkey from the zoo was moved to the sanctuary and was soon joined by other monkeys, and they all seemed happy and satisfied.

She was sitting all alone on a bench(长椅), as all the busy travelers rushed around her. She didn’t move. Most travelers were in such a big hurry that they didn’t notice her at all. I was one of the travelers but I couldn’t leave this little girl alone, who was no older than my own daughter. I didn’t see her parents anywhere.
So I walked up to the girl. “Hello,” I said. “Are you all right?”
The little girl didn’t even look up at me. I gently sat down next to her and touched her shoulder. The moment she lifted her head, I noticed that she was crying. I felt terrible!
I held out my hand. The girl seemed afraid, but she took my hand and let me lead her to the bus station information desk with not clear words. I explained the situation to the security guard(保安). He then made an announcement (通知) over the speakers. “Attention, please! A young girl is waiting for her parents at the information desk. If you are looking for your daughter, please come immediately!”
A couple of minutes later, a woman came toward the desk. As soon as she saw the little girl, she shouted and ran up to her. She held her in her arms tightly, saying “I am here, Andrea. Everything is okay. I love you, honey.”
Then she turned to me. “Thank you so much, sir,” she said. “We got separated in the crowd earlier. My daughter is deaf, so I didn’t make an announcement over the speakers for her. I was looking for her everywhere. I was so worried!”
