Helping Seniors(老年人) Matt I created Teens Helping Seniors with my friends. The group has about 200 volunteers. The volunteers give food to the elderly in town. We spend six to eight hours a week doing this thing. LindaI organized Miler Senior Technology, a program to help the elderly learn how to use computers and smartphones. Now there are 50 local seniors in the weekly technology classes. I want to make sure that the seniors could stay connected to the world. JordanI came up with a way to help lonely seniors with my friends. We call it Joy 4 All Project. When the elderly call 569-4255, they can hear pre-recorded jokes. The hotline has received more than 1, 800 phone calls. KathyI heard that the seniors in the old people’s home couldn’t see their families and friends very often, so my friends and I decided to cheer up the elderly by writing them letters or visiting them. When visiting them, we often talk with them or sing for them. By now more than 100 students in my school have joined us. We now have our own name called We Are Together. |

Jordyn’s first round of giving was in 2016. Now, as a high school student, Jordyn still brings joy to kids in the hospital. It is the eighth time that she has donated (捐赠) birthday gifts to Baptist Children’s Hospital.

Natalie Gutierrez, who works at Baptist Children’s Hospital, has seen the wonderful influence of Jordyn’s gifts. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and doctors,” says Gutierrez.
Jordyn shares why she loves doing this. “Seeing other people’s happiness—that’s all that matters to me. 5 . In the countryside, many parents have to leave home to make money and their children become left-behind children. To solve the problem, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (中国扶贫基金会) started a program called Partner Mother Project. The program needs local (当地的) women aged 49 to 55 to be the “mothers”.
The local women understand local languages and cultures, so they are the fittest (最适合) for the program. Also, the “mothers” should be full-time to make sure they won’t think about other work.
The “mothers” will do parents’ job, finding out what the children need and helping them with problems. Each “mother” will take care of about 300 to 500 children. Their job is to give quick service and solve the children’s problems.
The program is now going just in some villages. It will probably start in other places of the country in the future. It can be a good way to solve the left-behind children problem.

A community (社区) is an important place. You live, work and play there. You look after your family and care for your children there, and you say hello to neighbors and make new friends there.
There are many helpful places in the community. There are fire and police stations, schools, hospitals, libraries and so on. These places help keep a community healthy and safe (安全的).
You can also do something to keep your community healthy and safe. Being part of a community means helping those around you. There are many needs in communities. All people, young or old, can help meet those needs by volunteering.
◆A retired (退休的) teacher helps school children get across busy streets safely.
◆A ten-year-old boy walks an elderly neighbor’s dog after school.
◆A teenage girl helps at the children’s hospital.
◆A young boy helps at the old people’s home.
These helpful people volunteer. They do something good without getting money. They use their time and talents to help others. They feel good about themselves, too. Volunteering helps make the community a better place to live in.
