3 . Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip (兔唇). Children with these conditions have terrible problems with eating, drinking and speaking and one in ten of them die before their first birthday. The luckier ones live, but they are often rejected by friends and sometimes even by their own family. In rich countries, simple surgeries can correct most of these mouth problems and allow children to live normal lives. But in poorer countries, the operations are too expensive for ordinary people and there are not enough doctors who can do them.

In 1982, American doctor Bill Magee and his wife Kathy, a nurse, went to the Philippines to do some cleft lip surgeries. But it was a short trip and there was no time to help all the children who needed surgery. They felt terribly guilty. When they got home, they started a new charity. They called it Operation Smile.

Now Operation Smile works in more than sixty countries. Five thousand volunteers give their time and skills to provide free mouth surgery to the children who need it most. The charity also provides medical equipment and trains local doctors to do the surgery themselves. In this way, the results of an Operation Smile visit continue long into the future.

When an international group of doctors and nurses travels to a country, two secondary school students go, too. The students are usually people who have done a lot of fundraising (募捐) in their local area and told a lot of people about the work of Operation Smile. Their trip is a fantastic way to experience a completely different culture and help to change lives forever.

6 . Chris is not a traditional explorer—he usually works in an office for a large organization. Yet his job can sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.

Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (国界). MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people.

At the moment, there are over 27, 000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with experience in tropical (热带的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’S work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.

But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience you gain is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to people’s lives.

7 . Lei Feng Spirit

Every year on March 5, China celebrates “Lei Feng Day”. It’s a day to encourage community service and volunteering.

Lei Feng was a soldier (士兵) in the People’s Liberation Army (人民解放军). He died in 1962, aged 22. His short life was filled with “selfless (无私的) service for the people”, reported China Daily.

As a non-Chinese person, I learned about Lei Feng once I came to China. The lesson was quite memorable (记忆深刻的).

One day, I was riding my bicycle down the street and a tire burst (车胎爆裂). A passer-by asked if I needed any help. He kindly guided me to a nearby bike stand for repair (修理). Once we got there, I thanked him and asked what his name was in Chinese. He said, “I’m Lei Feng.” Not knowing who Lei Feng was, I replied, “Well, thank you, Lei Feng.” He and the others at the bike repair stand burst out laughing. I stood there confused (困惑的). Why were they all laughing?

A few months later, our Chinese teacher told us about Lei Feng, this hero of small acts of kindness and community spirit. I remembered the guy who helped me with my bicycle. Then it was my turn to laugh.

After this, I began to notice Lei Feng’s image (形象) on cultural souvenirs (纪念品) in local tourist shops. Learning more about his life, I think his spirit of public service is important. With threats (威胁) like the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情) and natural disasters (灾难), we need people to lend a hand and show the “Lei Feng spirit” now more than ever.
