1 . March is the month to learn from Lei Feng in China. Lei Feng is probably the most famous Chinese soldier. He was born in 1940 in Changsha, Hunan. Lei Feng lost his parents when he was very young. His neighbors brought him up. He became a soldier at the age of 19. He helped many people during his 22 years of life. He passed away (去世) more than 60 years ago. But the “Lei Feng spirit” still inspires (激励) Chinese people to do volunteer work.
Lei Feng often spent his spare time and money helping people in need. He did many good deeds (善举) in his life. For example, he gave his own money to the parents of another soldier, and bought tickets for a woman he didn’t know without telling her his name. Lei Feng hardly ever spoke about what he did. After he died, people found his diary and learned about him. “There is a limit (限度) to one’s life, but no limit to serving the people,” Lei Feng once said in his diary.
In 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong called on (号召) the nation to learn from Lei Feng. Lei Feng is more than a name in China; he’s a symbol of selflessness (无私). Lei Feng is a role model that all Chinese young people can learn from. No matter how times change, the spirit of Lei Feng will always be with us.

3 . Volunteering has a long history in America. In the New World, Americans helped each other in groups to plant crops, build houses and fight illnesses. In 1736, Benjamin Franklin set up a volunteer firefighting company (消防公司) and now more than 70% of the firefighters are volunteers.
According to a report, Americans spent nearly 8 billion (十亿) hours of their time on volunteering in 2011. Today, nearly a quarter of Americans are volunteers. Many high school students need to spend a number of hours volunteering in some places. On the one hand, boys would like to try physical activities such as cleaning up parks or working with younger children in sports. On the other hand, girls would like to help the homeless or disabled people or to work with art groups.
The Internet also helps people to find many volunteering activities around their homes. With the help of the Internet, volunteering can be very easy. Sometimes people can do volunteer work by sitting in front of the computer.

The Youth Team of Shougang Winter Olympics Service is one of the volunteer groups that worked at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The 192 young volunteers worked for 66 days and offered more than 15,000 hours of service.
It is not an easy job to work as a volunteer. Liu Junyu, 28, from the team, found out the way to help people get in and out of the venue (场馆) more easily and safely. Other volunteers helped clear 50,000 m2 of ice and snow each day. This made sure that the games worked well.
Also, a volunteer needs to learn a lot. According to Jiang Meng, a 26-year-old volunteer from the Shougang Group, volunteers needed to know all about the venues. They also kept in mind the history and stories behind them to better show the beauty of Shougang and Beijing to guests.
“People say volunteering is about giving, but I’ve got a lot, too, through being a volunteer—the honor (光荣), as well as the growing personal skills,” said Jiang.

10 . I am a teacher of No.5 Middle School. I have a son. He is eight years old. Every weekend I have Saturday breakfast out with him together though I am busy.
Last Saturday we met two homeless boys in the park. They didn’t have money to buy food. So we paid for their breakfast. We plan to do this each Saturday from now on. I told him that we needed to “save money” in order to do this. And he said yes happily. So we are going to share our breakfast. It means I will have to start to like the hamburgers with beef! Also, I plan on cutting back on my lunches out during the week so that we can have enough money to do this. And we plan to visit a nursing home each Saturday, too. We are going to help the children there. We can study and play with them.
Really, I love my Saturday with my son very much. It has special meanings for us. I am sure it can give him a lesson, and it can also let him know how great it is to help others. I even think it’s the best time of my week.
