6 . When Sammie Vance was just 8, she thought about a question: What breaks your heart? “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the seventh grader from Indiana, US, told people magazine, “I’ve been lonely myself, I don’t want others to feel that way.”
Soon after a summer camp, Vance learned about buddy benches (伙伴长椅). These benches are seats at a school playground. A lonely child can sit on it, which shows that he or she is in need of a friend.
She loved this idea. “This would be really cool to have at my school,” Vance said. Then she got into action immediately. She collected 725 kilograms of bottle caps and found a company to turn the caps into benches for her school. According to Vance, these recycled benches cost much less than regular park benches and are good for the environment.
Vance collected more for benches at other schools too. She also made a Facebook page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations. She was surprised that her small project has had an influence on people around the world. She even received bottle caps from Germany, Australia and Israel.
Today, Vance has helped make more than 200 recycled benches in schools and neighborhoods. But she has no plans of stopping. She said in an interview that even adults can use a buddy bench because people at any age can feel lonely. “I just look forward to making a difference,” she said, “and encouraging other people to make a difference.”

7 . My name is Jane. I am 14 years old. My best friend is Mary. She is as young as me. We are in the same class. She is a tall girl with short straight hair. She is very outgoing and helpful. But I am a little shy. I am afraid to speak in front of others. But Mary can bring out the best in me. She always asks me to do meaningful things with her. Last week, we volunteered (自愿) to help in a nursing home. I felt so happy to help others. I am poor at math. Therefore, Mary always helps me with it after class. Sometimes I can’t understand well, so she explains again and again. She is really patient. Now I get better grades in math than before.
In order to make me brave, Mary and I join some clubs in our school together. We join the music club and the volleyball club. Now, I’ve changed into an outgoing and helpful girl, too. I’m so lucky to have a friend like her. So I think it’s unnecessary to be the same as your friend. As long as you care about each other, both of you can be better.

8 . How far will you go when strangers ask you for help? For Mr. Cheng, an old security guard at Hangzhou Dianzi University, the answer is 17 years and 100,000 yuan.
One night in September 2005, a man and his kid got out of a taxi and came to Cheng. The father said that his kid was a freshman (大一新生) at the university and that 6,000 yuan they had was stolen. He asked if Cheng could help them by paying the taxi driver. “Of course,” Cheng replied. It was 68 yuan.
Several days later, he heard some stories about the kid he had helped. The kid had worked hard to get into the university. He was poor, and his parents had borrowed 6,000 yuan for his college education. However, since the money was gone, the kid would probably drop out.
Cheng decided to help again. He wasn’t rich, but he paid 6,000 yuan for the kid’s education and didn’t tell it to anyone. Cheng also took out a few hundred yuan every month and sponsored (资助) the kid through college. In the following years, he also sponsored another five students, but these stories about him were never known by others until recently.
The greatest thing about people like Cheng isn’t what they do or how much they have; it’s how much they want to help and how far they want to go although they don’t have much to give.
