6 . Alexis Lewis is a girl from America. She likes to invent — to think of new ideas for things that no one has made before, and then make them.
Alexis often enters competitions for young inventors. When she was younger she spent time with her grandfather, who made transport for people to go to space. One day Alexis’ mother told her about a newspaper article which explained how difficult it was to get sick people through the countryside to hospital in Africa. Alexis wanted to help.
Alexis knew that in North America, before there were cars, horses pulled heavy things on a travois (旧式雪橇), made of wood. Alexis thought people could do the same, but she added wheels. To make her travois light, she used bamboo, a plant that grows in Africa, not wood.
To pull Alexis’ travois, you wear a belt (腰带), which means you can carry or hold other things. Alexis thought her travois was ideal for carrying food home from the market, as well as taking people to hospital. After it was finished, she wrote instructions for building one so people in Africa could make it themselves.
With help from U.S.companies, Alexis gave some free travois to hospitals in Africa. She didn’t ask them for money because they were for poor people.
Alexis doesn’t know if she wants to be an inventor when she’s older, because she also likes music and writing, but she thinks it’s important for children to learn about inventing at school.

7 . I have a 12-year-old son who is kind and helpful. And he is showing great interest in growing plants. I have been helping him plant flowers, vegetables and plants since spring arrived.
When planting a bunch of flowers one Saturday afternoon, I found that there were two flowers left in my son’s basket. My son decided to take them to the little house next door where an elderly woman lived by herself and didn’t seem to have much company. I watched him as he went up to her door, rather hesitantly(迟疑地).
Because he didn’t know her, and he quietly left the flowers on her doorstep so that she would get them the next time she went outside.
The next morning we were happy to find that she had planted the flowers in a pot (陶盆)by the door. They looked really beautiful. Although it was a small thing, it was important as my son has learnt to do good for others. He said to me, “It feels really good to do things for other people.”

10 . Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong, and nothing seemed to go right? Not too long ago I was having one of those days. My job didn’t go on well and I was disappointed and sad. So I visited my mother and hope to get some comfort from her. Instead, she said “I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too. Why don’t you make her some cookies and we’ll take them to her this afternoon?”
I didn’t really want to, but what else could I do at that moment? I made the cookies and put them on a little plate. Then I made a card with a sunflower on it and wrote a small note.
Then I went to Jamie’s door and rang the bell. Soon she came to the door. Before she could say anything, I said, “I heard you were having a hard day and decided to bring you something. I hope your day goes better.” Her look at that time was always in my head: a dark sky was suddenly shone; and her day became bright again.
I got back into the car and for some amazing reason, I felt a lot better myself. Suddenly I remembered a saying from a famous writer which goes, “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”
