I was at the shop last night and saw a homeless woman with a trolley (手推车) full of her belongings. She was sitting inside the shop to keep warm. I went up to her and tried to give her money for something to eat, but she refused. She explained that she had enough food today.
I explained that I just wanted to help her and asked if I could buy her something warm. Again, she said no. She thanked me and said how thankful she was that I could offer help. We introduced ourselves, and she said that when I saw her next time, she would accept help. What an amazing woman! The woman taught me an important lesson: Not all homeless people accept money or help if they believe they’ve received enough that day. I look forward to meeting her again.
Walking out into the cold night, I met a homeless man who was freezing (冻僵的). I gave the money to him. He appeared to have had a drinking problem, but I was glad that he accepted my help.
I left with a special feeling. I always try to understand what it’s like to be in a homeless person’s shoes or to imagine if they were my children facing such difficulties. I learned how lucky I am and how thankful I should before what I have.

An old man walked slowly into a restaurant with his cane (拐杖). His old jacket and shoes made him unusual that day.
A young waitress named Mary watched him move towards a table by the window. She ran over to him and said with a smile, “Here, sir. Let me give you a hand.” Without saying a word, he gave her a smile. She pulled the chair away from the table and helped him sit down. Then she put his cane against the table so that he could reach it. In a soft, clear voice, he said, “Thank you, Miss.”
“You’re welcome, sir.” she replied, “I will be back in a moment, and if you need anything, just wave at me!”
After he had finished a good meal, Mary brought him the change. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Comeback and see us, sir!” The old man turned around and smiled.
When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under the plate, she found a business card, a 100-dollar bill and a note. The note said, “Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It shows the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness.”
In fact, the old man was the owner of the restaurant. That was the first time that Mary, or any of his waitresses, had seen him.

4 . The 24th Winter Olympics were held successfully in Beijing in 2022. There were many great moments during the competitions. What impressed you most?
“Welcome to China!” This simple greeting from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of a US snowboarder (单板滑雪运动员) Tessa Maud at the Olympics opening ceremony (开幕式).
“That guy who had said ‘Welcome to China’ really just makes me cry every time because they volunteers are so nice. We feel so welcomed,” said Maud in the video she shared on Tik Tok.
Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an example of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) promoted cultural and people-to-people exchanges at the Beijing Winter Games. Active and open-minded, they bridge gaps in their own ways. Their pleasant personalities, global vision and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.
Gen Z athletes shared their Chinese travels on social media. Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on Tik Tok-fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.
Gen Z volunteers served the event with heart and soul. Alexandra Pozhidaeva, 23, from Russia, had a heart-warming moment with her Chinese peers. When the stadium (体育馆) was very cold, they lent her their gloves. She said it was touching as they didn’t know each other.
Another volunteer, Yang Jinhe, 18, started to work on some matters in mid-December. He will also work at the Paralympic Games(残奥会). Back in 2008, he was impressed by the song You and Me. Now he said he really understands the meaning of “you and me” as well as the Olympic spirit of togetherness.

7 . A group of college students decided to educate the children in a small village. They chose a village in a mountain. The villagers and children there knew nothing about education. So the college students chose to go there.
When the students reached the foot of the mountain, a couple of men from the village took them to their places. The tribes (部落) lived happily with no use of modern things.
They explained to the head of the village about their aim of educating the children. The villagers were happy to hear about it. The students gathered the children and created a timetable (时间表) for teaching them.

He planned to hold a race to encourage the children. He announced that a child who ran fast and reached first would get all chocolates. What happened then was a real happiness! The students were quite surprised by the acts of the children. All children held the hands of the kids who stood next to them. They ran towards the chocolate box and held each other’s hands.

9 . As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is the way the charity organization Heifer International(国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was “not a cup, but a cow”.
Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.
On Heifer International’s website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies get better lives. They will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源)for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female(雌性)baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals’ health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.
