1 . In order to improve students’ health and reduce students’ pressure, our country made some rules. Here are some of them.
Firstly, homework for middle school students should take no more than 90 minutes. They can finish most of written homework at school so that after school they only spend a little time finishing the rest. Some students can still go to sleep on time even though they don’t finish their homework until bedtime. Then they will have more time to relax. Secondly, mobile phones mustn’t be brought to class because students are easily absent-minded (心不在焉的) from the lesson. Students must control the time on electronic products to protect their eyesight. They shouldn’t lose themselves in the Internet. Thirdly, students are expected to listen carefully and go over lessons in time so that they can master the right methods of learning. Fourthly, parents should often communicate with their children, pay attention to their feelings and help them develop good learning and life habits.
In a word, these rules are helpful to middle school students. If they follow the rules, they can improve their study and health.

2 . The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was a great success. China has kept the promise to hold a green Olympics. Many green actions made it possible, like providing environmentally friendly smart beds, using new energy(能源) cars, supporting sporting places with 100% clean energy and reusing rain and snow water.
Take making ice as an example. China didn’t use R507, a common material to make ice, because it isn’t friendly enough to the environment. Through 18 months’ hard work, China independently developed the CO₂ direct cooling technology.
A net of tubes runs under the ice. High-pressure liquid(液态) CO₂ goes through them to create heat(热) exchange. The CO₂ evaporates(蒸发) under the ice surface. The evaporation takes in heat and turns water on the surface into ice. And the CO₂ goes into another circle. This technology helps to make ice better and faster. And above all, it is much greener because there’s no new CO₂ produced. Among all the 15 ice sporting places in the Winter Olympics, 7 used the CO₂ direct cooling technology to make ice. As a result, much less pollution was caused.
Beijing did so much more to save energy. Beijing built the new sporting places with green materials. As for the old ones, Beijing used new glass walls to take the place of traditional walls to let more natural light in. 70% of the waste heat was also reused to keep warm and dry. And a large number of new energy cars were used at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the first to truly achieve carbon neutrality(碳中和), and it has set new standards in green technologies. Some newspapers say China has set an example for the world in environmental protection and green development.

4 . Snowboarding(单板滑雪) is one of the newest events at the Olympic Winter Games. It was first included in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagand, Japan. And it has become one of the most popular and exciting sports at the Winter Olympics.
There are 11 events in the snowboard competition at Beijing 2022, and mixed team snowboard cross (障碍追逐混合团体) appeared at the Winter Olympics for the first time.
Snowboarding was invented in America in the 1960s. A Michigan engineer named Sherman Poppen stuck two skis (滑雪板) together for his kids to ski (滑雪) down a hill. Poppen offered the idea to a company, which sold over half a million products in 1966 alone!
In the late 1970s, snowboarders started to appear, but some skiers (滑雪者) tried to keep the snowboarders away from “their”mountains. By the 1990s, almost everyone had accepted snowboarding. And it quickly became a very popular sport.
The first national snowboarding championships (锦标赛) were held in America in 1982. Many other big events followed its way, which helped snowboarding appear at the Olympic Winter Games.
Now, snowboarding is a popular winter sport around the world. Even little kids are joining the sport. Why not have a try right away?

5 . Food waste is a big problem around the world. While some people throw away unwanted food, lots of people in other parts of the world face food shortages(短缺).
Because of this problem, many countries in the world like Germany and France have set up food banks. People and grocery stores(杂货店) who have enough food can give extra food to them, then they can give the food to those in need. Shanghai Oasis opened China’s first food bank in 2015. In five years, it saved seven million tons of food and helped 760,000 people.
Many fruits and vegetables go to waste because they look ugly. For example, about 25 to 30 percent of carrots don’t make it to the store because of their looks. So try to buy ugly food next time, since it is just as good as “normal” food.
Many Chinese restaurants are telling people to order dishes by using the “N-1” formula (方案). “N”stands for the number of people in your group. So if you’re in a group of six people, you should order five dishes.
It is a shame to waste food. But everyone can do something to make a difference.

You may already know that hurricanes (飓风) are storms which can cause strong waves, wind and rain. They happen during Hurricane Season, which is from June 1st to November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th to November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.
There are five categories (级别) of hurricanes, which depends on the wind speed. The categories help people know how much damage (危害) a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are so strong that it can pull down the buildings along the way completely.
When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a terrible flood (洪水). The center of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passed over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long there would be more wind and rain as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change its way, so if you find yourself in the path (路线) of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety advice.
*Be sure you have a radio, fresh drinking water and enough food.
*Tell family members your emergency (紧急情况) plans. Tell them where you will go if you need to leave your home.
*If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay in a hotel or in an emergency living area.
*Stay inside during the storm. You could get seriously hurt if you go outside.

8 . There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why? A new study published (出版) in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.
“Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee and other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking.” the lead writer of the study, Dr Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said. For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 317 of those people had esophageal cancer.
The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only about 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.
The scientists found that drinking 700ml drinks (about 3 cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (140°F or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same amount (数量) at a temperature below 140°F.
This is not the first report showing a person drinking very hot drinks has the risk of cancer. In 2016, the World Health Organization showed a report. It found that drinking very hot drinks of any kind could increase the risk of cancer.

9 . Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes. Here are two examples.
Music and hearing
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group couldn’t play any musical instruments. The musicians could hear the talking more clearly.
“Musicians hear better,” says the leader of the study, Nina Kraus. “Because they learn to pay attention to some sounds. Think about violinists. When they play with the group, they hear their own instruments and many others, too. But they must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore(忽略) the other sounds. In this way, musicians can play their music better.”
__________
Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. They can’t tell their names, addresses, or other information. But they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate different parts of the brain. Suddenly, patients may use those parts again.
According to Nina Kraus, music is not only wonderful but also good for us in many other ways.

10 . Earth Hour started at 7:30 p. m. on March 31, 2007 in Sydney. More than 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for an hour.
A year later, March 29, Earth Hour 2008 became a global (全球的) activity. 50 million people in 35 countries took part in it.
On March 28, 2009, more than 2, 100 cities in 88 countries joined in it. And the idea “Earth Hour” came to China.
On the evening of 8: 30-9: 30 of March 27, 2010, we turned off lights together with people all over the world in order to fight against climate (气候) changing warm for this year’s “Earth Hour” activities.
Global warming is causing the ice to melt (融化) on mountains all over the world, then the sea level is rising and fresh water is disappearing with the disappearing ice.
It is very important for us to take part in this action. Nowadays the environment problems are becoming more and more serious. Humans just want to take more and more from the earth and never make a contribution (贡献) to the earth. The relationship between humans and the earth is just like that between children and mother. So do something as much as you can, the earth will be better than now. We should pay more attention to the problem of climate change and the climate change is one of the most serious problems in the world. I hope everyone takes action and joins in the activity of “Earth Hour”.
