In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar (阴历) is called Layue. The month is full of interesting festivals and customs.

Laba Festival, which is on the 8th day of Layue, is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people begin to get ready for the Chinese New Year.

On Laba Festival, people eat hot Laba porridge (腊八粥). There are usually eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds, dates, and three different kinds of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but a blessing for the coming of the Chinese New Year.

Laba porridge is not the only tasty food in Layue. Laba garlic (腊八蒜) is popular in the north. People begin to soak (浸泡) the garlic in vinegar from that day on, and eat it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year. While in the south, people like making sausages (腊肠).

Another major celebration before the Spring Festival is Xiaonian. It is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. Traditionally, it is an important day when people offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God who looks after the family.

Don’t forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It means sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.

3 . Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

This is an old English saying (谚语). It means that we should go to bed early at night and get up early in the morning. If we do, we shall be healthy. We shall also be rich and clever.

Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. Children of your age need ten hours’ sleep every night. If you go to bed late, you can’t have enough sleep. Then you can’t think carefully and your homework will be wrong. You will not be wise and you may not become wealthy!

Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is not good for them. We should sleep at night when it is dark. The dark helps us sleep well. When the daylight comes, we should get up. This is the time for exercise. If the body is not used, it will become weak. Exercise keeps it strong.

Exercise helps the blood to move around inside the body. Blood takes nutrition to all parts of our bodies. The brains (大脑) in our heads also need blood. We think with our brains. If we keep our bodies healthy, and take exercise, we can think better!

Our bodies also need air to breathe (呼吸). Without air we will die. Get up early in the morning and we can have plenty of clean, fresh air. That will keep us healthy and happy.

A.how to make more moneyB.when we should get up

文章大意:本文介绍了“once in a blue Moon”这个短语的真正含义以及它的由来等。

4 . Do you know the phrase “once in a blue Moon”? People use it to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone may say that he will eat chocolate “once in a blue Moon” because the food is unhealthy. Or someone does not usually like to go to the beach. He may say “I visit the beach once in a blue Moon.” It sounds easy, but not everyone knows the meaning (意思) behind it.

The first thing to know is that the Moon itself is never really blue. The phrase “blue Moon” has nothing to do with the colour of the Moon. As the Moon goes around the Earth, it keeps changing the shape. When we can see the whole Moon, it is called a full Moon. Usually there is only one full Moon every month. Sometimes, however, there will be two full Moons in one month. When this happens, the second full Moon is called a blue Moon. However, a blue Moon happens every two to three years.

As you can see, a blue Moon is a very rare event (事件). This fact has made people use the phrase “once in a blue Moon” to describe such events in their life.

1. What may someone mean when he says “I go to the movies once in a blue Moon”?
A.He goes to the movies once a month.B.He doesn’t go to watch movies very often.
C.He goes to see a film at night.D.He usually watches the Moon once a month.
2. What may the underlined word “rare” mean?
A.Interesting.B.Unusual.C.Boring.D.Important.
3. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A.The colour of the Moon.B.When to see a blue Moon.
C.The shape of the Moon.D.The true meaning of “once in a blue Moon”.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了人们对锻炼的一些错误的看法。

5 . Today, people want to keep healthy through sports and exercise. But some of them have some wrong ideas about it. “A plate of chicken is a good meal before games because it has much energy.”

In fact, the best meal before games should have carbohydrates(碳水化合物). Food like potatoes, bread, bananas are rich in it, but chicken and meat are not.

“The best time to exercise is early in the morning.”

No. Morning is a good time to exercise, but it may not be suitable for you. If an afternoon or evening is suitable for you, and you enjoy the feeling of getting healthier, you can choose any time to exercise. So there is no fixed time for you to exercise.

“If you drink water when you exercise, you’ll feel tired.”

The fact is that you must have some water during breaks(休息时间)when you exercise. And after exercising, you must have enough water. If you don’t drink enough water, then you may feel tired.

“Exercising every day is quite important.”

Wrong. Too much exercise is bad for your health. You need to give your body a day of rest.

A.in the morningB.when you exercise

文章大意:本文是说明文,主要介绍了在柏林游览的一些攻略。

10 . Have you ever been to Berlin? I paid a visit to it for five days and enjoyed a happy time. Berlin is a big city. In order to make my travel easy, I divided the city into some areas, and then traveled from area to area. It is a great place for a bike ride instead of walking around. It provides a fast and easy way to move around Berlin, and costs around 9 Euros per day to rent(租).

If you really want to enjoy walking, there is also a free walking tour. It begins at the Brandenburg Gate and lasts 3.5 hours. It took me through the center of the city, showed me all the highlights(重要的部分) and gave me some history about the city.

For me, one of the most important things is to enjoy the local delicious food. We can judge(判断) a city on how cheap it is by the food, and the food in Berlin is very cheap. And not just street food, even the restaurants there are a bargain. You can find a lot of meals for less than 5 Euros. Here is a truth for you—the lemons(柠檬) and the fresh vegetables are mouth watering.
