Britt van Belkom worked on the study. She said, “Young children have to try a new vegetable 8 to 10 times before they like it. So we looked at whether asking children to try some vegetables over and over again would make them more willing to eat their greens. We were also interested in whether providing a fun reward would make a difference.

Almost 600 children aged 1-4 took part in the study. They were divided into 3 groups. Group A got vegetables to try every day, but there was no reward for trying them. Group B didn’t get any vegetables to try or any rewards. Group C got vegetables to try and then a reward. The children in Group A didn’t change their willingness to try vegetables. And the children in Group B were actually less willing to try vegetables! However, the children in Group C were willing to eat more vegetables at the end of the study.
