A picture speaks a thousand words. And nowadays, people like to use emojis to show their words instead of speaking or writing. According to some experts, the Emoji is the language which develops the fastest in the UK’s history. Now in Britain, emojis are becoming more popular than short forms like “lol” (laughing out loud), or “muah” (the sound of a kiss). They are leading a new way of communication and are even thought as art!
“Big red heart” emojis seem to be well loved! Because using these emojis makes the text full of personal characters. People can have fun when they use emojis to express themselves. What’s more, using emojis can make people laugh. Teenagers in the UK also said that they really enjoyed the fact that emojis are quick and easy.
People also express their feelings by using the emojis which they like best. Have you noticed the emojis you recently used? They may show how you feel these days. In the UK, emojis like “face with tears of joy”, “face blowing a kiss” and “love heart” are the most commonly used. At least, with the use of emojis, British people may be more fun than people think! People can also learn a lot about a culture from their emoji complaints. For example, before the emoji “cheese wedge (奶酪块)” appeared, British people were always complaining that there was no cheese emoji!
Emojis are now greatly popular, but what is the future of them? Will the emoji soon be more than English as an international language? Or will the emoji be forgotten when the next big thing comes along? It is hard to say.

Not all tomatoes are red. They can be yellow, orange, pink, or white. All tomatoes are green before they are ready to be picked. Then the tomatoes turn their true color. That’s when they’re ready to eat!
Tomatoes first grew in the Americas. The Incas (印加人) grew them over 1,000 years ago. They were introduced to Europe by the Spanish in the early 16th century. The Spanish and Italians seem to be the first Europeans to accept them as food. In France, people grew tomatoes in the garden just to enjoy their beauty. Many people there thought tomatoes would make them sick. It was years before some of them would eat tomatoes.
Tomatoes are fruits. They grow from seeds. They won’t grow in cold weather. But with water, sunlight and warmth, tomatoes grow fast. They can grow in pots or in the ground. As the plant grows taller, people may tie it to a stick. Next is the blooming stage. Flowers appear. The flowers turn into fruit. Some kinds of tomatoes can be picked in about six more weeks. Some tomatoes are large. One kind of tomato can weigh as much as two pounds.
You can eat raw tomatoes. First, wash them. Then, cut them up for salads or sandwiches. Tomatoes can be cooked, too. They can be grilled, boiled, or even fried. Do you use ketchup(番茄酱)? 3 . You might feel tired after solving a difficult math problem or studying for a whole day. Are our brains (大脑) really “burning (燃烧)” when we spend a lot of time thinking? In fact, our brains never stop burning calories (卡路里), even if we aren’t thinking about anything.
Our brain gets energy (能量) from a kind of sugar that is in rice and noodles. Our brain never really rests, it is burning energy in the form of sugar all the time. Even when we sleep, our brain needs energy to keep our body working. These include breathing, digesting (消化), and keeping the body warm.
The brain uses up 20 to 25 percent of the body’s total (全部的) energy. That’s 350 calories per day for a woman and 450 for a man. When you are five or six years old, your brain uses up to 60 percent of the body’s energy, according to Live Science.
When we are thinking hard, the brain burns more calories. In one study, researchers found that people who worked on a hard task on a computer ate around 200 more calories than those who were resting. That explains why you feel hungry and eat more after taking exams or studying for a long time.

Use It Up
① You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze (挤压) the last bit of toothpaste (牙膏) out of the tube. Use the last little piece of soap (肥皂). Don’t throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.
Wear It Out
② You do not always need to have new things. Suppose (假设) your trainers have broken laces (鞋带), but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don’t get a new mobile phone until the old one doesn’t work any more. Don’t throw anything away when it still works.
Make It Do
③ When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a sandwich. You are out of sandwiches. Have some bread instead, and you can use all of the bread. Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buying something new.
Do Without

Have your parents got angry with you because you didn’t clean up your room even after they had repeatedly told you to do so? Have your teachers been criticizing you for not handing in your homework on time? Maybe you are even in trouble with yourself. Are you yawning (打哈欠) all the time? Do the things that used to interest you no longer make you feel good?
Did you answer “yes” to some or even all of these questions? Do you consider yourself to be a gamer? If so, then maybe it’s time to turm off your computer and read this article carefully.
More and more study has proved that too much gaming can change your brain structure (构造). It can also lead to some physical illnesses that will remain with you for a lifetime. Your love for games is taking away your freedom to control your own future. This is not a joke!
Luckily, there are ways for you to help yourself so that you can start feeling good about your life again. The first step is to accept that you’ve got a problem. You can say this to your friends. Next, spend some time learning about what is happening inside your brain as a result of too much gaming. Think about how you feel when you are playing your favorite games. As soon as you win a round, do your hands move to start a new game without you even thinking about it? This is a clear sign of addiction (上瘾) — a brain disease.
In order to fight this disease, you may have to give up playing a particular game. Limit the amount of time you spend on gaming (the new national rules may be just what you need). You can also get help from your friends. They can, for example, help you to take up some new hobbies.
The teen brain is very flexible: it can repair itself. The key, however, is whether you are willing enough to give the chance to do so.

7 . Among all the books I have read so far, one of my favourites is Number the Stars, written by the American author Lois Lowry.
The book is set in 1943 during the Holocaust(大屠杀). It took place three days after Denmark surrendered(投降)to Germany. Around this time, the Nazi(纳粹)began to “relocate” the Jews(犹太人)they had caught in Denmark.
The book’s main character, 10-year-old Annemarie, lives in Denmark. Her good friend, 10-year-old Ellen Rosen, comes from a Jewish family. Word has spread that Nazis are going to “relocate” the Jews living in Denmark. Luckily, Sweden, unoccupied by the Nazis, makes an ideal place for the Jews to run away to. It’s time for Annemarie to work up her courage(勇气)in order to help her good friend out. Will she and her family risk their lives for the Rosens? You will know the answer by reading the novel for yourself.
Through the reading of Number the Stars, I realized the importance of friendship. Without their strong friendship with the Danish people, the Jews couldn’t have outsmarted the Nazis. But true friendships don’t only appear in books. They are actually all around us. Good friends help each other in many situations, from those that are as small as solving a maths problem to those as big as the one in Number the Stars. I have many great friends who have always been with me and helped me to deal with the difficulties I have met in my life. I should value it all my life.

10 . What’s going to happen in the future? Here are some things that scientists say are most likely to happen 10 to 30 years later from now.
1. Digital money
We used to pay with cash(现金)for everything we bought. In fact, we are already using one kind of digital money when we swipe(刷)our bus pass or use a credit card(信用卡)to shop online. You have to admit that using a card is much easier than searching your pocket for change. It is also safer than carrying a lot of cash with you. People in Sweden all stopped using cash last year and the US might be the next.

3.Self-driving car
Unlike a human driver, a self-driving car won’t lose attention because of a phone call, a radio or something outside the window. Sensors(探测器)and cameras on the car would allow it to keep strictly to the rules of the road and keep a safe distance from other cars. This would greatly reduce the number of road accidents.
