If you look at the top of your phone, you’ll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G. The “G” stands for the “generation” of your mobile network. But these symbols will become things of the past after 5G fully arrives.
On March 30th, 2019, Shanghai vice-mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X smart phone, CGTN reported. Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks.
Now, 4 G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive data (数据). But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less. This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, it can be used in many other ways as well
For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today’s self-driving test cars have one problem: lag. When the cat “sees” an obstacle (障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions. However, it takes time to send and receive this information. With this kind of lag, the cars might crash (撞击) because they don’t receive instructions in time. With 5G, this lag will be greatly lowered, making the cars safer, according to CNN.
5G could also be used to make the Internet of Things (IOT) more powerful. This refers to a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast Internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology. For example, with IOT under 5G, your fridge could automatically (自动地) order eggs online when it finds that there are no eggs left inside.
All in all, 5G will shape every type of technology that it touches. And you won’t have to wait too long for that to happen.

An Activity for Reading

It’s important to read to your child, but equally important to listen to them to read to you.
What you will need: Books at your child’s reading level!
What to do:
▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen, express their ideas, and ask questions.
▲Take turns. You read a paragraph and let your child read the next one. If your child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full passage.
▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage them to practise reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together.

4 . The start of a new school year is always exciting. This year was even more so for some students at White Cloud Primary School. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by an electronic teacher. This electronic teacher is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that appears, when needed, on students’ computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.
Created by technology company Smart Machines, Bill is able to show human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.
Just like human teachers, Bill is able to immediately respond to the students’ questions and opinions about the topic quickly. Thanks to computer cameras, he is also able to see and react (反应) to students’ physical actions. For example, if a student smiles at Bill, he responds by smiling back. This two-way exchange helps get the students’ attention. More importantly, it allows the program developers to improve Bill’s behavior and knowledge base (库).
The program has been a great success, according to Smart Machines Spokesman Robert Frost. Frost says, “What is interesting to me is the children’s reaction to Bill. He really captures their attention.” Frost thinks kids don’t find the experience of being taught by smart machines as strange as older people because they have grown up in a time of computers and smart phones.
Maybe human educators will lose their jobs soon because of Bill. But his talking head’s knowledge base is not large. More importantly, even the smartest computer programs can’t guess and react to all the unexpected situations that educators face daily. Bill’s future might be providing kids with one on-one help for different subjects and topics.

5 . Like many other countries around the world, China hopes to explore the moon. It has already done so with several probes (探测器) and lunar rover (月球车). But it has even bigger plans to put a man on the moon in the near future.
Yang Liwei, China’s first man in space, said that it will “not take long” for a manned mission (任务) to get official agreement and money support, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
China’s space program is still young compared to those of the United States and Russia. But it has already made great achievements in exploring the moon. Its moon mission began with Chang’e 1, an unmanned orbital (轨道) probe that was sent up in October, 2007. It collected data that was used to create a 3-D map of the moon’s surface.
China achieved another achievement with the Chang’e 3 mission. For this mission, China’s first lunar rover, Yutu, successfully landed on the moon.
For China’s space program, it was another great achievement that Chang’e 4, the second lunar rover successfully landed on the moon’s far side, an area that has not yet been explored, in December, 2018.
China will follow Chang’e 4 with a series of other lunar mission. These missions will include taking lunar soil and rock samples, building “moon base”, and hopefully landing a human on the moon’s surface around 2030, according to Zhao Xiaojin, a senior official at the China Academy of Space Technology.
Last year, when Yang Liwei was asked if he had any plans to visit the moon himself, he replied, “If I am given the chance, no problem!” It is likely that many other Chinese share Yang’s excitement about this new stage of China’s space exploration efforts.

On Oct 5 of every year, over 100 countries, such as Canada and Philippines, express their thanks by celebrating World Teachers’ Day. UNESCO（联合国教科文组织）started the day in 1994. It wants to remind people of the importance of the teacher.
