1 . You have been told to wash your hands many times a day to help stop the spread of the new coronavirus(新冠病毒). But what about the mobile phone that you're always using? Scientific studies have shown that the virus can live for two to three days on smooth materials like plastic and stainless steel. Experts suggest cleaning all "high touch" surfaces every day, including phones, keyboards and computers. However, few people know how to do the cleaning. Here are some things not to do when cleaning the phone.

◆Do not spray(喷)cleaners directly on the phone.

◆Do not put the phone into any cleaning liquids(液体).

◆Do not use tools that use forced air, which are often used to clean computer keyboards.

◆Do not clean the phone with hard materials, they could make small cuts on it.

So, what is the right way? Below are some suggested ways to clean the phone. With any of these suggestions, be sure not to get the phone wet.

◆Start by turning off the phone. Make sure the phone is not connected to the electricity.

◆Use cleaning cloths with 70 percent alcohol(酒精)instead of the common ones.

◆Use paper cloths, or other soft cloths like those used to clean the eyeglasses. It's OK to cover the cloths lightly in cleaners. But do remember to clean the phone"gently".

2 . What can you do to help yourself get out of stress or worry? If you're an artist, you keep making art. And if you have never considered yourself an artist, now is the time to take up an artistic hobby such as drawing or painting. It is never too late to start. Everyone can do it. If you can hold a brush or crayon, you can create art.

Creating art heals(治愈)not only the mind and spirit but also the body since all of these are connected. As you draw or paint,   your breathing slows, your blood pressure lowers, and your mind lets go of daily problems. This slowing down allows you to fully experience the moment. The process not only relaxes you but also brings a feeling of joy, increasing your energy and enthusiasm (热情)for life.

Making art also allows you to play, freeing you to find out and try out new materials and methods. It also lets you express pleasure by seeing beauty where others may not. Creating art provides you a special chance to express your anger or upset, as well as your personal ideas.

Although the process of making art is the most important part, your finished product is significant too.Your painting or drawing will remind you of the lessons you learned while making it, and you may feel energetic just by looking at it.

If you don't know how to begin, here are some ways to start creating art. If possible, set aside a small table with your brushes and watercolors so you can get creative whenever you get inspiration. Without thinking much about it, just choose colors that you like and start painting with them, or cut pictures with those colors out of magazines and glue them down, combining(结合)them with paints. The act of enjoying the colors and working on the color combinations will give you something to focus on instead of the stresses of your daily life.

3 .

Have you ever had lucid(清醒的)dreams? Recent studies suggest that the number of people having them is on the rise. Someone having a lucid dream realizes they are dreaming and may from then on"direct" the action. Or they may simply "watch" the dream unfold. The sense of awareness(知道)makes it different from a dream that is simply very lively and true to life. And although the description may seem strange, the process is far from alien to many of us.

Studies suggest that the number of people in the Western world experiencing lucid dreams, which happen once in a while, has risen by between 10 and 40 per cent since the 1980s. Today, they are so common that about one in eight of us will have one in our lives. But still, little is known about what causes them or what is behind the rise.

Research carried out at the respected Harvard University in the US shows that the brain is working hard during lucid dreams. In fact, the level of the mental(精神的)activity in some parts of the brain is similar to that of a person who is awake. Lucid dreamers seem to share certain personal characters. For example, in general they are quite creative. They are also good at digging deep into problems and going out of their way to solve them. Furthermore, they always believe in personal responsibility rather than letting society carry the can.

Our nightmares(噩梦)may show our waking worries, with the five most common ones——falling, being run after, feeling disabled, being late and the death of a loved one.Men are more likely to have nightmares about fights or being fired while hair and tooth loss appear more in women's nightmares---perhaps showing worries about losing their looks. Research has also found that women have more nightmares than men. Their dreams are also scarier and more unforgettable.

1. What do we know about lucid dreams according to Paragraph 1?
A.We know nothing about their process.
B.Fewer people are having them now.
C.They are just common lively dreams.
D.They may be directed by the dreamers.
2. Which of the following is true according to Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.The cause of lucid dreams remains a mystery.
B.The brain is inactive during lucid dreams.
C.Most western people have had lucid dreams.
D.Lucid dreamers have nothing in common.

A.By listing numbers.B.By giving reasons.
C.By providing examples.D.By making comparisons
4. Compared with men, which of the following dreams do women often have?

4 . Sing the Language You’re Learning

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way”, said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”

Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.”

“Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I could speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.

5 . You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting policy (垃圾分类政策). People there need to put different kinds of garbage into different bins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.

Garbage sorting is a big problem because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our environment. In fact, we can make use of some garbage again. But first, we need to sort it.

For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the "harmful waste" bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don't, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.

Garbage sorting and recycling around the world

Germany: There are big machines in supermarkets. You can put bottles in the machines and get money back.

Japan: A truck playing music comes to people's doors to pick up their garbage. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.

Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus-stations. An hour-long bus ride costs three large bottles.

Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai

6 . Wearing a white blouse, Ai-Da studies her subject and begins to draw. She looks like any artist at work. However, the "beep ... beep ... beep" noise from her arm gives her away. Ai-Da is, in fact, a robot.

Ai-Da has been described as the world's "first AI (人工智能) robot artist". She takes her name from Ada Lovelace, the world's first female computer programmer. Scientists at Oxford University developed AI systems (系统) for Ai-Da. The robot has cameras in her eyeballs. After she has studied a subject, she will use her left arm to draw. Now, Ai-Da can only use a pencil for sketches (素描). The plan is for her to paint.

Ai-Da is not the first AI system to produce artworks. Since 2006, scientists have been developing software (软件) to turn photos into drawings. Last year, an artwork created using AI was sold in New York for $132,500. However, Ai-Da's human-like appearance brings something new to the field.

In June, Ai-Da opened her first exhibition at Oxford. There were about 30 drawings by the robot. Ai-Da, standing next to her artworks, attracted (吸引) many visitors.

Ai-Da's inventor, Aidan Meller, talked about the importance of the robot. "Ai-Da brings a new voice to the art world," she said. "AI is going to be the big thing of the 2020s. That influences us greatly." Meller hopes the exhibition was just the start and that more will follow to show how AI is influencing human life.

8 . How can cactus(仙人掌)help the world? It can provide a new kind of sustainable fuel(可持续燃料). Nopalimex, a company in Mexico, has made one of the world's first cactus-powered factories. The idea came to Sosa in Nopalimex when he was looking for ways to save money for his food factory. He now powers his factory with cactus gas(气体). The cost to produce the gas is half the cost of electricity.

Soon, the gas produced by Nopalimex will also be used in cars. Nopalimex's gas is made by using the prickly pear(刺梨)——a kind of cactus. To make the gas, the prickly pear is mixed together with manure(肥料). Then the mixture produces the gas that can be used as fuel.

Why cactus? Fuel can be made from other plants such as corn. but there are a few reasons why cactus is a better choice. First, prickly pears need very little water and very little care, and grow well in hot temperatures. Today, these characteristics(特点)are key. Also, unlike corn, prickly pears don't need space that could be used for other food plants. They can grow in areas where many food plants can't grow. Last, after making gas from prickly pears and manure, their byproducts(副产品)can be used to help grow food.

Scientists still need to do more research on making and using prickly pear gas. As projects like Nopalimex show, we have the possibility to produce more sustainable fuel to power our lives.

1. How can cactus help the world?
A.By saving farmers' money.
B.By providing a new kind of sustainable fuel.
C.By taking the place of corn.
D.By producing a lot of electricity and gas.
2. Why does Sosa power his factory with cactus gas?
A.Because he wants to save money for his food factory.
B.Because he has grown a lot of cactus and com in his town.
C.Because he wants to be well﹣known around the world.
D.Because he wants to grow cactus instead of corn.
3. What does the underlined word "mixture" in Paragraph 2 refer to(指代)?
A.The Nopalimex company.
B.The manure.
C.The prickly pear and manure.
D.Cactus.
4. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How cactus is used to produce gas.
B.Where we can grow a lot of cactus.
C.What Nopalimex does with cactus.
D.Why cactus is a better choice to make fuel.
