1 . In Chengdu, tea culture has developed into the Chengdu-featured(特色的)tea house culture. There is a saying about Chengdu tea houses: You could see more tea houses than sunny days. Why can the tea house in Chengdu catch so much eyesight? Because of their many different functions(功能): for relaxing, meetings, as well as entertainment.

Chengdu tea houses are often decorated(装饰)with bamboo desks and bamboo chairs. Chengdu people love tea houses, because they love chatting. They often gather together in a crowded tea house, and drink tea when chatting in their free time. They often have a cup of tea and cakes, watch actors performing traditional arts, talk and laugh with people in the house, which could be true joy of life.

The soft wind is filled with tea's smell. The teas they use are usually jasmine green teas, Dragon Well and Biluochun. They use northern Gaiwan as tea sets (larger than Gongfu Gaiwan). Gaiwan is made up of three parts: the lid, the cup and the saucer(茶碟). When the tea service master pours water into the Gaiwan, you will see the water filling from the air into Gaiwan, with a lively sound. In a moment, water stops. Then look at the Gaiwan. The water in it is just right at the level of the Gaiwan's mouth, with a simple drip(水满)on the desk. This is a unique(独特的)skill, as well as an art.

No matter where you are in Chengdu, in a quiet park or in a busy street, you can see those featured tea houses. They have fair price and good service. People can stay there for half a day, having only a cup of tea and little snacks. In the talks of friends and neighbors, the colorful tea culture of Sichuan is fully expressed.

Mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. Mobiles are often believed to be the cause of a number of things from poor eyesight and headaches to house fires. There's even one theory that mobile phones should be responsible for the disappearance of bees!

The theory is that the radiation (辐射) given off by mobile phones does great harm to bees' navigation systems (导航系统). Bees have built-in system a bit like GPS and this helps them find their way back to their hives. But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed they are dying far from their hives.

The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more serious than it at first seems. The important thing about bees is that most of the crops in many countries of the world are pollinated by them. Without bees, the crops can't continue to grow. Many beekeepers in Europe have reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Jim Piper, London beekeeper, said to the reporter, "My business is becoming worse. Twenty-nine of my forty hives are now empty."

Nobody knows for sure whether the theory is true or not, but it's a fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers. And we can't manage without them. Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years! If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it right now—before it's too late.

1. What might be caused by mobiles according to Paragraph 1?
A.Poor listening.B.The forest fires.C.The disappearance of bees.D.Terrible toothache.
2. What does the theory in the passage say?
A.Bees have GPS inside their bodies.B.Mobiles have an influence on bees' hives.
C.The radiation makes bees unable to fly.D.The radiation makes bees lose their way home.
3. The underlined word "pollinate" probably means "________" in Chinese.
A.授粉B.污染C.啃食D.催熟
4. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.Crops will stop growing.B.Beekeepers' business is getting worse.
C.Bees' disappearing is a serious problem.D.Beekeepers in Europe found the problem first.
5. The author wrote this passage to ________.
A.call on people to help beekeepersB.show how a bee's built-in system works
C.ask people to stop using mobiles right awayD.warn people of the possible harm mobiles do to bees

4 . Do you get lots of reading tasks as part of your homework? You might wish that you could read faster. There are some people who say that you can learn to read at super-high speeds. But experts disagree on this idea.

"Speed reading is not actually possible," said Elizabeth Schotter, a scientist at the University of South Florida, US. Schotter pointed out that people who say that they can teach others how to speed read are usually doing it to make money by selling courses and books.

In fact, speed reading has been made known to people since 1959, when US educator Evelyn Wood introduced a speed reading program. Several US presidents have even asked their officers to take sped reading courses. However, there is no real science behind sped reading.

Schotter explained that reading is a task difficult to finish. It includes four steps: seeing a word, getting back its meaning from your memory, connecting it to other words. in the same sentence, and then moving on to the next word, This process uses many parts of the brain at one time. It can't be sped up.

Some people who say they are able to speed read are simply skimming. Skimming involves reading a passage quickly and only looking for certain words or sentences. Skimmers can figure out the main idea of a passage—especially if it's a topic they're familiar with—but they will not be able to remember all the pieces of information.

So is there a way to become a faster reader? Research suggests that you should try to improve the number of your words and simply read more.

1. According to Schotter, which of the following is TRUE?
A.It's good for students to read at super-high speeds.
B.Speed reading courses are supported by real science.
C.Reading includes four steps, it`s not easy to finish
D.Speed reading courses and books are useful for us.
2. What can we know from Paragraph 5?
A.Skimmers will not forget all the pieces of information.
B.You must read the passage carefully when you are skimming it.
C.Skimming focuses on all the words or sentences of a passage.
D.By skimming, skimmers may find the main idea of a passage.
3. According to this passage, how to read faster?
A.Learn more words and read more.B.Taking speed reading courses can help.
C.Read more books about sped reading.D.See the words at super-high speeds.

5 . When ice is on the ocean, the polar bears are on the hunt. They are hunting seals. Polar bears need the ice. They can’t catch seals as well in the water, where there is no ice.

In summer, some of the sea ice becomes water. Now, however, the sea ice is becoming water earlier than it used to. There is not as much time for the polar bears to hunt for food. They should have enough fat in their bodies to keep them from getting hungry. Some polar bears, however, haven’t been able to get enough to eat. By the end of the summer, they are going to die.

Scientists want to learn all they can about polar bears and how they can help them. To help the bears, they have to do tests. It is difficult, however, for scientists to get close to the bears. Scientists fly in a helicopter, over the places where polar bears live. When they notice a bear, they shoot a pointed object at it. The object makes the bear go to sleep. While the bear is asleep, the scientists can do their tests. The most important test is the fat test. If the bear hasn’t eaten for two months, it won’t have enough fat to live on.

Many people are worried about the ice that is becoming water. Polar bears have to go further and work harder to find food. If the ice keeps becoming water, one day there might not be any polar bears.

1. The underlined word “hunt” in the first paragraph means: __________
A.搜集B.游荡C.狩猎D.探索
2. If polar bears want to find food, what do they need?

6 . For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Every year brings more news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers?

Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. Their most successful period is in the early 20th century.

With the appearance of radio and TV, however, newspaper circulation(发行量)began to fall. 3 By the mid-20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news. That was especially true for breaking (突发的) news.

Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer (受损害). After work, more and more people turned on TV instead of opening a newspaper. That was because TV could provide news happening a short time ago. It’s true that newspapers couldn’t compete with TV on speed, but they could provide in-depth(深入详尽的)reports that TV news could not.

But newspapers suffered another, heavier blow (打击) in the 1990s. With the appearance of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription (订阅).

So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die? Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making changes. Some are going digital (数字的). Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source (来源) of in-depth news, analysis (分析) and opinions. 4 If newspapers disappear completely, there will be nothing to take their place.

7 . A tornado(龙卷风)is a kind of strong storm with air which moves in a circle quickly. They can move over 200 miles per hour and cause a lot of damage(损坏). As they move across the land, they can easily pick up cars, trucks, and even houses, and then throw them very far. It is important to find a safe place if a tornado gets close.

A safe place could be a basement(地下室)or the lowest floor. If you are in a home without a basement, try to find a first-floor bathroom or a small room without windows in the middle of your house. You should curl up(蜷缩)into a ball and cover your head and neck with your hands.

But there are some people who actually want to get close to tornadoes. They are scientists who want to learn more about tornadoes. One of the best ways to do this is to get as close as possible to the tornado. They use special tools to measure (测量) what is happening in and around a tornado.

One special tool is called a tornado probe(探测仪). Inside the tornado probe, there are sensors(传感器)to measure wind speed, temperature, pressure, and direction. Some probes even have cameras, so the scientists can see and understand what it’s like to be in a tornado.

To be able to get these measurements, the scientists have to get a tornado probe near or into a tornado. Scientists will try to guess where a tornado will go next. Then they drive to that location and put down the probe. If they do not guess correctly, they pick up their probe and try another place. If they are right, the tornado will go near or even right over the probe. Then they take all of the measurements from the probe and use them to predict where future tornadoes may form(形成)and travel. And they can give people some warning to keep away from a dangerous tornado.

1. If a tornado gets close, what should people do to keep safe?
A.Go to a basement.B.Find a small room.
C.Stay in a bathroom.D.Curl the legs up.

9 . The rockets take astronauts and man-made satellites(卫星)into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather checking and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down?

There are two opposite forces influencing the satellite. One of them is the force of gravitation(地心引力), which tries to pull the satellite towards the earth and is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away. The other force is created by the turning of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round.

Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by, the satellite loses its speed, which makes the force pulling it towards the earth stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite fall down to the earth.

1. Two same forces have an influence on the satellite.
2. The force created by the turning keeps the satellite from flying away.
3. Two opposite forces make the satellite turn round and round.
4. The satellite will stay in space forever.
