1 . The United Nations put out the most complete report on the problem of food waste. It found that the world wastes about 17% of all the food. That’s about a billion (十亿) tons of food a year. A billion tons is a lot of food—it’s about 931 billion kilograms. The report said that the food wasted is about twice as much as earlier studies had suggested. The study looked at several different ways in which food is wasted—at home, in restaurants and in stores.

It turns out that most food waste—about 61%—happens at home. The food thrown at home works out to about 74 kilograms for each person every year. Restaurants caused about 26% of the food wasted. The other 13% was thrown away by stores.

Food wasted was at about the same rate (比率) in all but the poorest countries. Many people thought rich countries were more likely to waste food than countries that were less rich. That turned out not to be true. In fact, some richer countries wasted far less food than common countries. But people in richer countries may waste less food at home because they are eating out at restaurants more often. That certainly seems to be the case in the US, which has low waste numbers for homes, but quite high numbers for restaurants.

The report points out that hundreds of millions of people are hungry every year. And wasting food is also really bad for the earth. Farming creates between 10% and 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放), which make the environment worse.

The report says that it’s important for countries to study food waste more carefully in order to make out ways to sew up the problem. Some possible uses for food waste include making food for animals and burning food wastes to create energy. The important thing is to keep food from simply going into rubbish bins.

根据上文内容判断正 (T) 误 (F)
1. The report shows ‘‘People in rich countries pay most attention to the taste of food.”
2. According to the report, people in rich countries don’t actually waste more food than others.
3. The underlined expression “sew up” in the last paragraph means “avoid”.
4. Paragraph 4 mainly shows the problem of hunger is difficult to solve.
5. The report suggests that countries should study how to reuse food waste carefully.

2 . For many, this term is their final term at the University of Utah. There are several things those students will undoubtedly miss. I’ll be spending a term in Florida working in a hospital to get some practical training, so I won’t be in Utah for a few months. I’ m already worried about the change and I’m taking time to enjoy everything I will miss.

The first thing I’m going to miss about Utah is the sunsets. On a clear day, Utah has colorful sunsets. It’s possibly caused by pollution, but no matter what, they’re interesting and special. The second thing I’m going to miss is the dryness of the state. From what I know of Florida, it is like always walking through a cloud of thin fog. Winter in Florida is like summer in Utah, but with more rain.

I’m actually going to miss driving. In Florida, I’ll only be taking the bus. It’s going to be a short distance, and I won’t think about how fast I go or when I should turn. During my long journeys every day in Utah, I listened to audiobooks(有声读物), and they helped me with my homework and were more enjoyable than the radio or the sounds of traffic. In a word, I could always gain a lot while driving.

Lastly, I’m also going to miss the Marriott Library. It doesn’t matter where I sit; in the library, I can have great fun learning there. Having $ 2 snacks just a couple of meters away from me, a service that can print quickly without technical difficulties and the atmosphere(氛围)of hundreds of other students around me who are also working hard and getting their homework done, make the library the best place for studying. And I mustn’t forget to mention the books. I never thought a school library famous for research would have all I need to enjoy George R. R. Martin’s world of ice and fire, but it does.

1. Why is the author leaving for Florida?
A.To go for a holiday.B.To go to university.C.To have a job interview.D.To get practical experience.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.The author likes the sunsets in Utah.B.The author thinks it is too dry in Utah.
C.The author hates the pollution in Utah.D.The author wishes for more cloudy days in Utah.
3. What does the author think of his driving to school in Utah?
A.It makes him lonely.B.It is highly productive.
C.It takes too much time.D.It has made him a careful man.
4. What is one reason the author likes the Marriott Library?

C.It is less crowded than other libraries.D.It is famous for its collection of novels.

3 . On January 27, in order to win the new pneumonia Resistance War(抗击新型肺炎战), the Ministry of Education issued(教育部公布) a notice on putting off the start time of school in spring 2020. It was said that school should not start before March. The exact start time of school will depend on situations and further notices.

However, many parents are very worried that putting off the start of school may affect(影响) children’s studies. If they have such a long winter vacation, children will not learn any knowledge, read books or study at all. They may forget what they have learned before. Staying at home for a long time will make them keep eating, sleeping and playing, which seriously affect their physical and mental health.

In short, the close of school influences learning and develops bad habits, so how should we avoid these problems? Local education departments have also issued a notice, that is, to organize online teaching and create a network platform(平台), where necessary courses will be shown every day, and online teaching will be given by excellent teachers of the subject, and students can learn at home through computer or mobile network.

It should be said that such a method is very good. It can not only keep students indoors and not worry about the infection(感染) of the disease, but also make them study at home, improve their learning ability, and truly achieve “no suspension of classes”. Both the platform itself and the recorded lesson resources are more useful, and are welcomed by parents and teachers.

Of course, except for learning at home, it is also necessary to teach children about health knowledge, especially how to keep away from touching virus and other knowledge popularization; at the same time, it is also necessary for children to do some physical exercises or some games, which is good for physical health at home.

5 . The Face-down Generation(一代)

If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, world wide, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?

Some adults worry that you’ re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.

Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt(溺爱)and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “ helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and afterschool activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.

Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls'rightsto go to school.

So if you 're one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you do great and laugh out loud.

8 .

We touch our faces all the time, and it had never seemed to be a big problem. A recent study shows, touching our faces-the "T-zone" of our eyes, nose and mouth in particular-can mean giving ourselves the deadly virus.

This is why organizations like the Centers of Disease Control and Prevetion (CDC)have suggested that we should avoid touching our faces. Yet, stopping this "simple" behavior might be harder than you think because it's already fixed into our system. That is to say face-touching is subconscious, which means it's very hard to change "because you don't even know you're doing it", said Sawyer.

But face touching has its functions. Some face touching is an automatic behavior when there is an itch* on your nose, you'll scratch it without thinking. According to CNBC, a 2014 study found that touching your face also helps to reduce stress and regulate mood. For example, you're more likely to do it when you feel nervous or embarrassed. According to Dacher Keltner, a professor at the University of California Berkeley, US, this action may also come with a social function: When you are talking to someone and want to change the subject, for example, touching your face is like "the curtain on a stage, closing up one act of the play, ushering in the next, "Keltner told the BBC.

You can't help touching your face, but you're not alone. In a 2015 study, where a group of medical students were filmed in class, it was found that they touched their faces an average of 23 times an hour-with 44 percent of the touches being in the "T-zone". That was particularly surprising since medical students were supposed to know better.

Since it's hard to shake the habit, maybe the easiest way is to wash our hands more often. This way, we can be sure that our hands are free from the virus.

Tips for keeping your hands away:

※ Tie up your hair so your face won't itch because of the stray hair.

※ Keep your hands occupied, e. g. with a stress ball.

※ Ask a friend to keep an eye on your hands.

1. It is hard to stop touching faces because people _________________________.
A.don't take it seriously
B.do it without awareness
C.are born with the behavior
D.feel happier while doing it
2. In Keltner's opinion, touching faces during a conversation probably means ___________.
A.moving on to another topicB.getting an itch in the face
C.showing an interest it in the subjectD.feeling nervous about the talk
3. Who is doing right to keep hands away from faces?
A.John usually puts his hands on the nose
B.Tony relaxes himself by holding stress balls.
C.Sally gets her hair down even in hot summer.
D.Mary advises her friends to do eye exercises.
4. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.It's harmful to touch our faces frequently.
B.Touching the T-zone will make you die soon.
C.More medical students should take part in the study.
D.Washing hands more often helps stop touching faces.

9 . Today, the world’s diversity(多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops.

There are now 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die. Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war. Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!

The organization Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back-up, or extra copy, of all the world’s seeds. Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.

Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Organizations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.

Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, “If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth way more than it cost.”
