1 . You might feel full after having a big meal. But you may actually suffer from “hidden hunger”. This means that what you eat may fill your stomach, but it’s not giving you the proper nutrition that your body needs.

This happens when food lacks the vitamins and minerals people need to stay healthy, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

At present, “hidden hunger” affects 2 billion people worldwide, including 300 million people in China. It is most commonly seen among children and teenagers and can result in bad immune system, blindness or even death, China News Service reported.

Many Chinese people don’t get enough iron, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D. One main reason is that agricultural products don’t have much of these nutrients. Over 40 percent of China’s farmland is lost its vitamins and minerals, lowering the nutritional value of the crops that grow on it, according to Xinhua.

Many of the processed foods that people enjoy eating today, such as chips, burgers and cookies, have made the situation worse. Vitamins and minerals area easily lost when these foods are processed. People’s Daily noted.

The human body needs 16 kinds of minerals, including iron and calcium, and 13 kinds of vitamins, including vitamins A and D, to stay healthy. Vitamins help maintain healthy eyes and skin and allow your bones to grow properly. Minerals are important for maintaining blood pressure and making new cells.

In response, China’s government has created several action plans to improve public health, as well as develop and promote nutritious foods.

Eating more fresh nutrition—rich food like vegetables, whole grains and dairy can help us stay healthy. For vegetables like carrots and broccoli, boiling and steaming can better preserve their nutrition when compared to frying them, CNN suggests.

2 . One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of disease is to simply wash your hands. Twenty seconds of hand—washing with soap and water can reduce illnesses and save lives. But, many people, especially children, do not have good hand—washing habits. One problem is that children do not wash their hands often enough or long enough. Children may think that it is a tiring thing to do.

To help handle this problem, two businesswomen from India created a product to turn hand—washing into a fun activity. Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good hand—washing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap properly and regularly.

As the name suggests, SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash the drawing off. If they don’t spend enough time washing it off, the colors will remain on the children’s hands. Issar said it makes sure that children take enough time to wash their hands. This may be especially helpful in a classroom. Often a teacher does not have the time to make each child wash his hands properly.

Kids actually wash their hands for the proper amount of time because they’re drawing on their hands. To obliterate the drawing, they wash their hands carefully instead of just going under water with a one—second wash and off. Issar and Anand stated that SoaPen to be created everywhere will help develop good habits through hand—washing in the city across the globe.

4 . Upcycling is the process of changing old materials into something useful and often beautiful. It is different from recycling. When you recycle something, old materials need to be broken down so that their base materials can be remade into a new product, often of inferior quality. When you upcycle an object, you aren’t breaking down the material. You’re simply making it into something else. Also, the upcycled object is typically of the same, or even better quality.

The idea of upcycling isn’t new. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when people didn’t have many material resources. In those days, people found new purposes for old things over and over until they were no longer useful. For example, old coats would be turned into shoes and an old door would be made into a new table.

Nowadays, economising is still a big reason why some people upcycle. An even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is that it’s environmentally-friendly. Things shouldn’t just be thrown away when they can be turned into something useful. Upcycling is also more environmentally-friendly than recycling which requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling just requires your own creativity and effort.

Upcycling can provide you with something that’s both creative and practical. Why don’t you support the idea by checking your house or recycling bin and creating objects yourself? Take action right now!

5 . Maybe you should sit down before you read this. It's a little scary. Your sitting may be killing you.

Health experts say the U.S. adult now sits about 6.5 hours a day. That is up about an hour a day compared to 2007. The news is even worse for teens. They sit eight hours each day. The information was put out by the National Center for Health Statistics. It has collected the numbers for the past 16 years. It is worried about what it has found.

Research shows that people who are not active can get sick. Their bones get weaker. They burn fewer calories. And that probably makes them put on too much weight. They might even get diabetes. They are at risk for high blood pressure and heart problems, too.

Some experts also think sitting too much can influence how your blood moves through your body and how well your body defeats illness. Being active helps in lots of ways. It can make you happier, burn more calories and give you more energy. It can also help you sleep better.

About 60% of people in the U.S. watch at least two hours of TV each day. That number has stayed about the same in recent years.

Computers are the biggest reason for more hours spent sitting. Computer use outside of work or school has gone up for all age groups. Now, 50% of adults spend at least an hour of their free time on a computer each day. That is up from 29% in 2003.

About 53% of teens now spend at least an hour of free time on computers. So do 56% of kids. As many as one in four people who use computers use one for three hours or more outside of work and school.

So get up, take some breaks and go outside. You might save your life by doing outdoor activities.

6 . “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD(公元) 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉), computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy(赶时髦的), beer-drinking granny”, to one who cooked things.

8 . Artificial intelligence (人工智能) is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to many industries. It might be one of man's greatest inventions.

And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks. In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible disadvantages of AI. What they found was that "Every AI developed by the good guys is also helpful for the bad guys, too." according to Quartz.

Their biggest worry was that the bad guys could use AI for bad things. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people's personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be used to hack software and break into computer secure systems (安全系统).

There are some other worries as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake imagines and videos. Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can "clone (克隆)" anyone's voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample (音频样本).

Many leading people have expressed worries about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.

However, this is set to change. In March 2018, the European Union plans to set up a group that will discuss the moral and ethical (伦理道德的) dangers of AI, which will help to keep it safe for mankind.
