At the age of 16, Einstein (爱因斯坦) was always busy playing with a group of naughty (顽皮的) kids. He failed his final exam. One morning, when Einstein was fishing with his friends, his father stopped him and said, “Einstein, you like playing so much that you failed your exam. I’m worried about your future.” “What are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but aren’t they still going fishing?” “My boy, you can’t think like that,” his dad said. “There is a fable (寓言故事) in our hometown. Listen to it now.”

“There were two cats playing on a roof (房顶). One cat was careless and fell down the chimney (烟囱) while holding the other cat. When the two cats climbed out of the chimney, one of the cats had soot (烟灰) on his face, while the other cat’s face was clean. Seeing the soot-faced cat, the clean cat thought its face must be dirty, so it quickly ran to the riverside and washed its face. The soot-faced cat saw the clean-faced cat and thought its face was also clean, so it just swaggered (昂首阔步) down the street and went on playing happily.”

“Einstein, no one can be your ‘mirror’. You have to think for yourself. If you just follow others, you will never learn.” Hearing this, Einstein walked back to his room. He decided to study and he didn’t care about what his friends were doing. This made him successful.

文章大意:本文讲述了一只狗和他的主人在一起生活的日子。后来主人因为搬家,把他送到狗屋时,他的感受。
3 .

When I was a baby, I jumped and ran around you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you? ”—but then you'd give up, and played with me and I thought that life could not be any more perfect.

My house training was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work, and more time searching for your human friend. Later, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then your babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was excited by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to look after them, too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. However, as they began to grow, I became their friend.

Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not let pets in. You’ve made the right decision for your “family”, although I wish I could be your family all the time.

You filled out the paper and said to the staffs there, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They said nothing. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words in my mind.

Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my dog house, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, hoping you had changed your mind and hoping this was all a bad dream.

My owner, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.

9 . It was Sunday. I had the last patient to see. She was an old woman. I walked in and saw from her chart that she was in good condition. I was almost done.

The woman was sitting on the bed, trying to put on her socks. She asked if I could help her. Instead, I started a monologue (长篇大论): “How are you feeling? You look worried. The nurse said your son is visiting you today. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”

She stopped me with a serious voice: “Sit down, Mr. Green. This is my story, not yours.”

I was surprised. I sat down and helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him for five years. She believed her health problems were worse because of missing her son. After hearing her story, I asked if there was anything else I could do. She shook her head and smiled. All she had wanted me to do was listen.

For years I have met many patients. They have their own stories. Each story is different. Some are clear; others are not. Some are true; others are not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard.

Listening to someone’s story costs nothing but it is the key to healing (康复). I often think of what the woman taught me, and I always tell myself the importance of stopping, sitting down and truly listening. I believe in the power of listening.

10 . Money can’t buy happiness, right? Well, not true. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal(华尔街日报), over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper understanding of the relationship(关系) between what we earn and how we feel. The research may show us the result: Yes, people who earn more money, generally speaking, are happier than those who earn little. But the research also shows that you have to spend your money properly if you expect it to bring you happiness. Here are some suggestions for you to spend your money in a better way:

Buy experiences, not material goods.

In a recent study, Ryan Howell, a professor from San Francisco State University in the US, found that when people didn’t have enough money to enjoy a trip, they preferred to buy some material goods. But travelling with your family or friends may bring you more happiness and the wonderful memory of the travel experience will stay in your mind for many years.

Buy lots of little things, rather than one big thing.

No matter how much money you spend on something and how special that product is, you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another object. People like having new things, but the happiness it brings to you will soon disappear. Buying small things can give us small pleasures often and you can get different surprises and happiness from different small things.

Be sure to buy time, too.

It’s also important to consider how the things you buy will affect how you spend your time. For example, buying that big house in the countryside may seem to be a good idea, but according to The Wall Street Journal, people who spend more time on the way to work are not so happy as those who live near the workplace.

Try giving it away.

Elizabeth Dunn, a professor of a University in Canada, found that in countries such as Canada, South Africa and Uganda, giving away money to the poor made people happier. This was even true when people were giving away even when they themselves were really poor.

1. From the passage we know ________.
A.Money sometimes can buy happinessB.Money can’t buy happiness at all
C.Money is not everythingD.People who earn more money are not happy
2. Ryan Howell thought buying experience was better than buying material goods because ________.
A.people preferred travelling to buying things.
B.the memory of the travel experience will stay for a long time
C.travelling is cheaper
D.people are poor
3. People may feel much happier if they ________.
A.don’t give away moneyB.buy a good house in the countryside
C.live near the workplaceD.buy what others have
4. The best title of this passage may be “________”.
A.How to spend moneyB.Ways to earn money
C.MoneyD.How can money buy happiness?
