1 . One day when some government officials (官员) were rebuilding a house, they found a mouse hole in a corner and used smoke to make the mice inside come out. A while later, they saw mice running out, one after another. But they saw two mice didn’t run away immediately. It seemed that one was trying to bite   ( 咬 ) the tail of the other.

Everyone was puzzled, so they came nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the two mice was blind, and the other was trying to make the blind mouse bite his tail in order to pull   the blind one with him to run away.

During the meal time , they started to talk about the two mice. One serious American said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of king and guard.”

A smart Frenchman said, “I think the relationship between them was that of husband and wife.”

A Japanese said,“ I think the relationship between them was that of mother and son.”

At that moment, one Chinese asked, “Why did those two mice have a certain relationship?”

Suddenly, they looked back at the Chinese. The American, the Frenchman and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered (低下) their heads in shame, and didn’t answer.

In fact, the great love is not built on friendship or blood relationship. Instead, there’s no relationship.

1. Neither of the two mice ran away immediately because one was trying to help the blind one.
2. After the meal, the officials began to talk about the two mice.
3. The government officials came from different countries.
4. The officials lowered their heads in shame because they didn’t realize the importance of protecting animals.

2 . From Nov. 1 to Dec. 10 in 2020, if someone knocks at your door and wants to ask you some questions, don’t be afraid. They are working on the 7th national population census (普查). They will ask each family about their name, age, education and job.

China has a census every 10 years. At the first one, there were about 600 million people in China. Now China’s population has boomed. It was about 1.37 billion in the 6th census, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“The census is very important for every citizen (公民),” said Ning Jizhe, director of the NBS. “It will help improve infrastructure (基础建设) and public services. For example, if the census shows that there are many children living in a certain area, the government will know that it should build more schools there. Scientists can also learn more about population growth from the census. In some years, the population grows faster than in others. Even in the same year, population growth is different in different places. Scientists can use the information to figure out what causes growth in certain years and places.

2020’s census is different from past ones in one important way. For the first time, citizens will be encouraged to use smartphones and other digital tools to record their information, Xinhua reported. When census takers knock on your door, they will offer you an account (账号) number and a QR code (二维码) that you can use to record your information.

3 . There is great excitement and argument(争论)over Artificial Intelligence(AI, 人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting. but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.

AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons, Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.

However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence(情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction(互相作用), and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But it hasn’t been proved that robots can imitate this well.

I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decisions. These are skills that they can get as they get more life experience and are given the space to experiment.

To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data(数据)you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

1. The writer starts the passage by ________.
A.telling storiesB.comparing views
C.raising questionsD.giving suggestions
2. We can learn that some people think a good teacher might be able to ________.
A.use AI as much as possible in the class teaching
B.help kids think more freely and creatively than AI

3. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why teachers can be replaced in classrooms.
B.There is argument over Artificial Intelligence.
C.How helpful AI can be to both students and teachers.
D.AI is only being used successfully in education.
4. What’s the structure of the passage?

4 . I’ve been working in a school for more than twenty years. Many parents often ask me, “How can you teach your child good study skills? How can he or she get the homework done as quickly as possible?” Here are some tips:

1. If the child is as young as nine or ten, ask him or her to prepare a small notebook to write down the homework given by his or her teachers. By developing this habit, he or she will learn to be much more responsible(负责的).

2. Find a good place to study. This should be a quiet place that is free from everything but study things. No games, radios, or televisions. Once you have decided on a place to study, this should be the only place where your child does his or her homework and studies. There should also be a very specific time for homework to be done. Usually, homework should be done as soon as the child gets home from school. This also goes for the kids who take part in after-school activities. Of course, it is a good idea to allow the child to have a healthy snack before the work begins.

3. Also remember, that it is the child’s duty to do his or her homework. Some children give up easily and go to Mom and Dad for help when they have a problem. Try to let them solve it first. By doing this, they will get a sense of success from overcoming problems. In this way we help them to help themselves.

5 . Food waste is a big problem. About one-quarter of the world’s food is unharvested or thrown away.

Some food suppliers want to stop food waste. They have promised to cut their food waste by half before 2030. They have joined a special project. The project is called 10×20×30. Companies from many countries are taking part. Nearly 200 food suppliers have signed up for 10×20×30. A lot of food suppliers are big companies.

Food waste is bad for the environment. It causes climate change. Climate change is also called global warming. Climate change is caused by greenhouse gases. These gases come from the burning of natural fuels like oil, gas and wood. Making food produces greenhouse gases. It would help the environment if we only made the food we need.

It is not just big companies that create waste. People waste a lot of food, too. ReFED is a nonprofit(非盈利)company. It is working to end food waste. Scientists at ReFED studied where food is most often wasted. The study showed that about 15% of waste happens on farms and producers waste about 2% of food. About 43% food waste happens at home. And 40% food is wasted by restaurants. So waste occurs(发生)throughout the supply chain(链), with nearly 85% occurring at consumer-facing(面向消费者的)businesses and homes.

Brian Roe teaches at Ohio State University. He works to stop food waste. He says there are a lot of ways to reduce food waste. Producers can do more. They can even stop people from throwing food away. Smaller serving sizes would help. They could also put more information on the packets. Roe says it is a good thing that big food producers want to help. He’s hoping the companies can work together. If they work as a team, they will be able to do more. They can help each other learn what’s working. They can tell each other what’s not working, too. This will keep more food out of landfills in the end.

7 . In school all over the world, boys and girls are learning foreign languages. Everybody knows his own language, but another one is very useful, in especial when we travel to other countries. If we go to France, we ought to be able to speak French, and in Germany people will expect us to understand German.

How many languages are there in the world? There are about fifteen hundred, but many of them are not very important. English is one of the most important because so many people use it, not only in England and the USA, but in other parts of the world. About 200, 000, 000 people speak it as their own language, and another 200, 000, 000 use it as a second language. It is difficult to say how many people are learning it. Many millions of schoolboys and schoolgirls are trying to do so.

Which is the best way to learn a language? We should remember that we all learned our own language well when we were children. If we could learn a second language in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a baby does. It listens to what people say and it tries to imitate what it hears. When it wants anything, it has to ask for it. It is using the language, talking in it, and thinking in it all the time. If people had to use a second language all the time, they would learn it quickly.

It is important to remember, also, that we learn our own language by hearing people speak it, not by seeing what they write. We imitate what we hear. In school, you learn to read and write as well as to hear and speak, but it is best to learn all new words through the ear. You can read them, spell them, and write them later.

1. How many languages are there in the world?

B.English is an important language in the world.
C.All the people around the world are learning English.

A.The baby.B.The language.C.What a baby wants.D.A language learner.
4. What’s the best way to learn new words in the opinion of the writer?

5. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?

9 . People around the world love their pets. Cats are very popular. Their strange and funny behavior has made them really popular on the Internet, too. And English has many cat expressions.

Today we talk about one that is about canaries(金丝雀). With the beautiful feathers and lovely bird-song, many people keep them as pets. Some cats like to catch such small birds. So, if a cat eats one, it may have a look on its face that shows both pride and guilt(内疚). The cat was happy when it did it even if it was wrong.

If I look very proud but a little guilty for doing something, others can say that I “look like the cat that ate the canary”. This means, “I should not have done it, and I know it was wrong. But I am still pleased with myself!”

When using this expression, don’t forget the guilt part. If you have a friend who didn’t study hard but still passed the test because she cheated and still looked proud of it… then the expression will work quite well.

Now, we use this expression in other situations. When we have a secret, we may look hike the cat that ate the canary. We also use it when we feel smug. It means you are too proud of yourself. This kind of people are also hiding something from others or simply not telling all the details.
