1 . It’s said that dogs are man’s best friends. But for Frikkie Von Solns, his best friend is a lion.
The lion’s name is Zion and he is 16 years old. He was born in a zoo because his mother was there when she gave birth to him. Zion was taken away from his mother because his father might kill him.
Frikkie got Zion legally (合法的). He took him home and brought him up. When Zion was very young, Frikkie had to feed him every four hours. In order to take good care of Zion, Frikkie even shared a bed with him at times.
“I have learned so much from Zion,” Frikkie said. “For me, it is a special experience to grow up with a lion. Zion is a gentle (温和的) big cat. He has never hurt a human. I trust him.”
Frikkie often takes Zion out for a walk. Before they go walking, Frikkie always takes off his shoes because Zion doesn’t like the noises the shoes make.

Then I said: “Don’t worry, I’m just joking.” My mother shouted at me, “If you do it again, I’ll hit you.”
Another day I went swimming with my friends in the sea. I wanted to play a joke on them. In the beginning I swam fast and I called out “help!”. All my friends came to help me. However, they found that I was joking. But half an hour later I wasn’t joking. I was so fast, soon I got tired and couldn’t swim on in water. I tried my best to call my friends for help, but this time nobody came to help me.

4 . Gever is a computer scientist from California. In 2005, he started a summer program for children called Tinkering School. The idea was that children can learn important skills for life by building things together. Gever and his team help the children to think big and create plans for new things they want to build. Children have made fantastic things since the school started. They have made a rope bridge, tree houses, wooden motorbikes and boats.
At Tinkering School, children get all kinds of materials like wood, metal, plastic, nails and ropes. They get lots of real tools too, such as knives, hammers(锤子) and power drills(电钻). Tinkering School has been around for many years now, but nobody has ever had a serious injury in all those years. This is because there are strict health and safety rules they must follow. The children always learn how to use the tools safely and they must wear the right clothing and protection at all times.
Gever’s ideas have worked very well. A lot of children have gone to his summer schools over the years. In 2011, Gever decided to create a ‘real’ school, called Brightworks, in San Francisco. The school is very small —it only has 20 students aged 6 to 13. Brightworks is based on the same principles(理念) as Tinkering School.
Since it started, Brightworks has been written about a lot. Most of those articles have been very positive(积极的). They have praised the quality of the school. They have found the children are more active than at many other schools. But there have also been critical (批评的) voices. Some people have said that children are not learning enough at Brightworks. They feel that students and teachers are just ‘playing around’ all the time.
The students at Brightworks seem to love their school. We spoke to 12-year-old Tina Cooper. She has been a student at the school since last October. “Since I started here. His face looked terrible, it was swollen (肿胀的) and red. Yet his voice was pleasant. He told me that he came for treatment and that he’d been looking for a spare room since noon, but no one would give him one because of his face.
For a moment I hesitated (犹豫), but he said he would be happy to just sleep on our hallway. I agreed.
The old man had a huge heart inside his tiny body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughters and his disabled wife.
He didn’t complain while telling me his story. He was grateful that he didn’t feel any pain from his disease, which was seemingly a form of skin cancer (皮肤癌).
The next morning, he said, “Can I come back and stay the next time I need treatment?” I told him he was welcome to come again.
On his next trip, as a gift, he brought a big fish. In the years that he stayed with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us gifts like these.
My neighbor warned me that could lose potential (潜在的) renters by putting up the old man after he left the first morning.
Maybe we did lose renters once or twice. But if only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with appreciation.

You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep(深), such as your wishes or fears(害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong, and though they may not be perfect(完美的), they at least will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose(故意地)to hurt you.

Through a special app, users can either share or order a parking place. Owners who have idle parking spaces can share some information, including the parking position, license number and time limit(限制) on the platform. With the information, users can easily find the nearest place to park. The average(平均的) parking cost for shared parking is 4 yuan each hour, almost the same as the service cost in traditional parking spaces.
Qingdao is one of the Chinese cities that encourage shared parking. Some other big cites, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hefei, have also begun to try this idea. 8 . Autism (自闭症) is disorder of the brain that happens in the first three years of life. It affects the brain’s normal development. Most autistic patients have difficulty talking with other people or doing things. However, some of the autistic people have amazing abilities. For example, some can memorize many things and some can do calculations (计算) really fast.
Raymond Babbitt in the 1988 film Rain Man is an example. The character in the film was based on Kim Peek, a man from the USA. Peek couldn’t switch on a light or put his clothes on by himself. But his memory was so amazing that he could remember almost anything. He could memorize every road, place and distance on maps. He could even remember almost every word in thousands of books. His way of reading was more amazing. Peek could read two pages at the same time in just eight to ten seconds. He read the left page with his left eye and the right page with his right eye.
Scientists still don’t know for sure why some autistic people have a special talent after they have done a lot of research. There is one possible explanation. When certain parts of the brain are damaged (毁坏) by autism, other parts of the brain might get stronger. Therefore, special abilities were born.
But not all people with autism have amazing abilities. In fact, autistic people with amazing abilities are rare and the abilities cannot be trained. According to research, only ten percent of autistic people show signs of a special talent.
