文章大意:本文主要介绍了食物浪费的严重性以及它的危害。

1 . The United Nations put out the most complete report on the problem of food waste. It found that the world wastes about 17% of all the food. That’s about a billion (十亿) tons of food a year. A billion tons is a lot of food—it’s about 931 billion kilograms. The report said that the food wasted is about twice as much as earlier studies had suggested. The study looked at several different ways in which food is wasted—at home, in restaurants and in stores.

It turns out that most food waste—about 61%—happens at home. The food thrown at home works out to about 74 kilograms for each person every year. Restaurants caused about 26% of the food wasted. The other 13% was thrown away by stores.

Food wasted was at about the same rate (比率) in all but the poorest countries. Many people thought rich countries were more likely to waste food than countries that were less rich. That turned out not to be true. In fact, some richer countries wasted far less food than common countries. But people in richer countries may waste less food at home because they are eating out at restaurants more often. That certainly seems to be the case in the US, which has low waste numbers for homes, but quite high numbers for restaurants.

The report points out that hundreds of millions of people are hungry every year. And wasting food is also really bad for the earth. Farming creates between 10% and 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放), which make the environment worse.

The report says that it’s important for countries to study food waste more carefully in order to make out ways to sew up the problem. Some possible uses for food waste include making food for animals and burning food wastes to create energy. The important thing is to keep food from simply going into rubbish bins.

根据上文内容判断正 (T) 误 (F)
1. The report shows ‘‘People in rich countries pay most attention to the taste of food.”
2. According to the report, people in rich countries don’t actually waste more food than others.
3. The underlined expression “sew up” in the last paragraph means “avoid”.
4. Paragraph 4 mainly shows the problem of hunger is difficult to solve.
5. The report suggests that countries should study how to reuse food waste carefully.

2 . Windy days are common during spring. Did you know that strong winds can even influence trains?

On May 1, 2021, strong winds in Baoding, Hebei Province, caused a foreign thing to get caught in power lines above the railway lines, stopping some trains. Some passengers were even stuck on their trains while traveling.

High-speed trains receive power from wires (电线) hung above the railway lines, according to Worldwide Rails, a rail news website. As an important power source for high-speed trains, why are these lines so easy to break in the face of wind.

The line itself is strong, but too many light things can still influence them. Kite wires are one of the biggest problems for railway workers. If one end of a kite wire touches a power line and the other end touches the ground, it will cause a short circuit (电路) on the line, causing a loss of power.

Other materials, such as tin foil (锡纸), can also cause problems. If they are blown onto train power lines, they can stop trains from getting power.

In many cases, train workers have to remove foreign things from power lines themselves. The bigger the foreign thing is, the harder it is to clean up. Bird nests are one of the most difficult.

Because of their height and strength, power lines have become a popular place for birds to make homes. Birds carefully make their homes with branches and other materials. “They keep us busy. One day we deal with one bird's nest and the next day they’ll build another,” a Xiamen train worker told Xiamen TV. How to solve? To make man-made nests and put them along the lines to fool birds into thinking the place is taken.

根据上文内容判断正(T)误(F)
1. The train was late on May 1, 2021 because of a foreign thing caught in power lines.
2. The power of high-speed trains comes from underground wires.
3. Paragraphs 4 and 5 are two examples to show light things can stop trains from getting power.
4. Train workers solve problems caused by bird nests by making bird nests somewhere else.
5. The purpose of the passage is to warn railway workers of the risks they face.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了云南的一个专门向盲人描述电影的俱乐部。
3 . 根据短文内容,判断正误(正确“T”,错误“F”)。

Every Saturday, Wang Fokun travels 40 minutes to “watch” a movie with his friends. He became blind in his early 50s. However, he can still enjoy movies in a “talking movie” club-Xin Deng Theater. The club is in Kunming, Yunnan. A group of volunteers there describe movies to blind people.

“I listened to a movie for the first time in the summer of 2019, and it was amazing. The volunteers did a great job.” said Wang.

Describing movies to blind people can be challenging (有挑战性的). The volunteers must watch a movie three or four times to know everything in the movie. This way, they can describe the movie very clearly.

Zhou Quan started the club in 2017. “Movies are for everybody,” said Zhou. “Xin Deng Theater hopes to share movies with blind people and help to light up their lives.” Thanks to the special club, many blind people go out of their homes and their lives are more interesting.

Now many blind people come to Xin Deng Theater to “watch” movies every week. “They can enjoy the movies here. I’m so glad that I bring enjoyment to them.” said Zhou.

“It’s meaningful for us to spend our free time volunteering.” said one volunteer.

1. Wang Fokun goes to Xin Deng Theater three or four times a week.
2. The volunteers in the club describe movies to blind people.
3. Xin Deng Theater was set up in 2019.

4 . What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.

Escaping from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It’s important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not elevators.

From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.

Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may come into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may get into the room.

On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto hard ground might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

根据上文内容判断正 (T) 误 (F)

2. In a fire we can use elevators to come down.
3. Windows of any floor can’t be used when you are waiting for help.

6 . Hunting its food in the open sea, the shark has three senses on which it mainly depends. These are smell, sight, and the vibration (震动) of the water-the shark’s “hearing”. Of course, the sense of smell is usually thought to be the most important. Although the shark’s brain is small for the size of its body (some people believe the shark’s brain does not even record the sense of pain), a very large part of the brain is given to the sense of smell. Some scientists refer to the shark as a “swimming nose”.

The shark’s nostrils(鼻孔)are on the underside of its nose, just ahead of the mouth. But they have no connection with the mouth. In fact, they have nothing to do with breathing. They are for smelling only, and they do an excellent job. Each nostril is a kind of cup filled with olfactory cells(嗅觉细胞), the cells that sense smell. As the shark moves, or even when it lays still, water flows in and out of each nostril, often bathing the olfactory cells.

The shark has another tool for finding its food-its eyes. For a long while it was believed that the shark’s eyesight was very poor. But actually the shark sees better than most people had believed. In fact, it is unusually sensitive to light. And its eyes have a special addition, one it shares with cats and some other night animals-a mirror-like layer(层)in the back of the eye.

Light comes through the eye and is reflected back again. In this way the part of the eye sensitive to light is stimulated(刺激)twice.

7 . A few days ago, I received a letter from my Aunt Loraine.

It was a handwritten letter thanking me for some Shanghai cookies I had sent her. Aunt Lorraine is ninety-one years old and she has wonderful manners. That is why she sent me the “thank you” letter. She also has wonderful handwriting. Her penmanship (书法) is smooth. It is a pleasure to read.

Aunt Lorraine was educated half a century ago. At that time, penmanship was considered an important skill. Now, it is the age of e-mail and social media. Few people have the time or hope to practice their penmanship or write letters by hand.

This is not good. in my view, good penmanship still counts. This is especially true in school. If you want to get good grades, keeping your writing clean and beautiful will be important. Your writing might be full of good ideas. However, terrible handwriting can turn an A into a B. Awful handwriting can get you a D!

Good penmanship has other advantages, too. Since it's a skill, it trains your brain and develops your learning abilities. It also helps you organize your thoughts. And, believe it or not, that slow process of pushing a pen along paper improves your reading, spelling and even your pronunciation of English.

Apart from all these educational advantages, good penmanship also has personal advantages.   A beautifully written letter to a friend is something he or she will treasure forever. A letter that looks as if a chicken bad danced across the paper will be quickly thrown away. I have kept the letter from my Aunt Lorraine. It's a great treasure!

1. Why did Aunt Lorraine write a letter to the author?
A.To express her thanks.B.To show her wonderful manners.
C.To make herself pleased.D.To set a good example to the author.
2. According to the author, which of the following is NOT the advantage of good handwriting?
A.Getting good grades on your writing.B.Organizing your thoughts.
C.Making your writing full of good ideas.D.Improving your English pronunciation.
3. The underlined part in the last paragraph is used to describe ________.
A.a boring letterB.a great treasureC.bad handwritingD.good penmanship
4. What does the author want to do by writing this article?
A.To express the importance of clean and beautiful handwriting.
B.To share her pleasure of hearing from her aunt.
C.TO talk about her experiences of practicing penmanship.
D.To encourage people to write litters by hand instead of e-mailing.

8 . As we know, in many countries, English is used as the second language. But English is used as the first language in America and Britain. Americans and Englishmen not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs.

For example, in both America and England, people will shake hands if they meet for the first time. Besides, most Englishmen will open the door for women. Both Englishmen and Americans like standing in line at the post office, the movies, the bank or anywhere. Arriving on time is important both in England and America. For example, if a dinner is for seven o'clock, people should arrive close to that time or call up to say that they are late. Of course, in the two countries, people have some different customs. For example, Americans have "coffee breaks" while Englishmen have "tea breaks". But there are many customs that they have in common.
