1 . We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this high tower in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. She tried one spoonful and sputtered, “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother promised that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible way. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

My father died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

I am writing to thank you for looking after me so well when I came to stay with you in England. You made me feel like part of the family. I felt I was Ann’s sister, although I was just her friend from Singapore. I had a good time when I was in England. We visited many different places and took lots of photos. Around the world, support is growing for electric cars. Car makers are producing more electric cars at lower prices. Some European countries plan to be all-electric by 2040 or sooner. However, there are a lot of difficulties, and one of them is: If customers buy electric cars, where will they charge（给……充电）them?
Public charging stations are not built evenly（均匀地）around the world. Places with lots of support from governments, like China and the Netherlands（荷兰）, have thousands of public charging stations. But in many places, there are not many public charging stations. That’s a problem for people who need to drive further than 200 miles or so.
This situation worries many potential（潜在的）electric car owners. “If I can’t charge, there’s no way for me to choose an electric car,” says Solie, who works far from his home.
Mr. Romano, the CEO of Charge Point says workplaces should have around 2.5 charging stations for every worker and stores need one for every 20 electric cars.“Highways need one every 50 to 75 miles,”he says.
Luckily, car makers and governments are trying to close the gap. The number of charging stations grew by 72 percent to more than 322,000 last year, the International Energy Agency says. Some countries in Europe are building 400 fast-charging stations.

You may have heard about the woman who spent a year living on just a pound（英镑）a day. But in Germany, a woman named Wermer has given up using money completely. Her decision probably has something to do with her experience as a penniless refugee（身无分文的难民）during the Second World War（WW Ⅱ第二次世界大战）.
After the war, she lived a common life. She worked as a teacher for many years. But her memories of WWⅡ always stayed with her and she decided to do something about it. She came up with the idea of an exchange network（网络）which allowed people to exchange things and services without using money. Even though the program turned into a great success, she wanted to do something crazier. So she made the decision to leave her home and close her bank account（账户）. At first her daughters thought their mother had made an awful mistake. But gradually, they have gotten used to her unusual lifestyle.
Wermer sleeps on people’s sofas and wears second-hand clothes people don’t need anymore. Shops give her food they can’t sell. and she knows she could always go to a soup kitchen（a place where food is offered to the hungry for free or at a very low price）.
