1 . We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this high tower in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.

“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw several streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”

Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.

When I turned to Father for help, he would not help. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.

At school the next day, I poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She tried one spoonful and sputtered, “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother promised that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible way. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

But I never stopped imagining(想象)who the giver might be some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My father encouraged this imagining. 3 . Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills (风车) spin(旋转).When the windmills spin, they make electricity that we use.

A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that’s not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.

Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it’s clean. Windmills don’t pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it’s getting even cheaper.

A lot of people don’t understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds. They used to be true, but it isn’t true anymore. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New windmills spin slowly, and they aren’t dangerous for birds.

However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn’t blow all the time, so we can’t use wind power all the time. Finally windmills are noisy.

Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power. About 2.5 percent of the world’s power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.

1. New windmills don’t kill birds because ________.
A.birds don’t fly near themB.they are shorter than old windmills
C.they spin slowlyD.new windmills don’t spin
2. People started using wind power ________.
A.over 1,000 years agoB.about 500 years ago
C.about 80 years agoD.about 25 years ago
3. We can’t use wind power all the time because ________.
A.we can’t use windmills at nightB.windmills break all the time
C.wind doesn’t blow all the timeD.windmills are too expensive to use all the time
4. Which of the following is RIGHT according to the passage?
A.Most people don’t like wind power.B.Denmark doesn’t use wind power.
C.Wind power is getting more expensive.D.Wind power is getting cheaper.
5. The best title for the passage is ________.
A.Dangerous BirdsB.Popular and Clean Wind Power

Around the world, support is growing for electric cars. Car makers are producing more electric cars at lower prices. Some European countries plan to be all-electric by 2040 or sooner. However, there are a lot of difficulties, and one of them is: If customers buy electric cars, where will they charge(给……充电)them?

Public charging stations are not built evenly(均匀地)around the world. Places with lots of support from governments, like China and the Netherlands(荷兰), have thousands of public charging stations. But in many places, there are not many public charging stations. That’s a problem for people who need to drive further than 200 miles or so.

This situation worries many potential(潜在的)electric car owners. “If I can’t charge, there’s no way for me to choose an electric car,” says Solie, who works far from his home.

Mr. Romano, the CEO of Charge Point says workplaces should have around 2.5 charging stations for every worker and stores need one for every 20 electric cars.“Highways need one every 50 to 75 miles,”he says.

Luckily, car makers and governments are trying to close the gap. The number of charging stations grew by 72 percent to more than 322,000 last year, the International Energy Agency says. Some countries in Europe are building 400 fast-charging stations.

1. What can we learn about the Netherlands?

You may have heard about the woman who spent a year living on just a pound(英镑)a day. But in Germany, a woman named Wermer has given up using money completely. Her decision probably has something to do with her experience as a penniless refugee(身无分文的难民)during the Second World War(WW Ⅱ第二次世界大战).

After the war, she lived a common life. She worked as a teacher for many years. But her memories of WWⅡ always stayed with her and she decided to do something about it. Even though the program turned into a great success, she wanted to do something crazier. So she made the decision to leave her home and close her bank account(账户). At first her daughters thought their mother had made an awful mistake. But gradually, they have gotten used to her unusual lifestyle.
