1 . A lot of people are crazy doing the shopping through the Internet now. Why is it so popular? There are some reasons. First, more and more people have their own computers and their computers can be joined with the Internet. So it is possible for many of them to do the shopping through the Internet. Second, shopping online can save money and lots of time. Third, they don’t need to go to the shop themselves.

Because of these good facts, few people refuse it. On the other hand, some people don’t like this new way of shopping. They are worried about the safety of shopping online. Customers can only see the pictures of products on the Internet. And they can’t enjoy the pleasure of buying things in large supermarkets or some wonderful stores. These are the reasons why they don’t like it.

But I think more and more people will like this kind of shopping in the future.

根据短文内容,判断下列句子的正(T)误(F)
1. Only a few people are interested in shopping online.
2. Shopping online can only save money.
3. All the products on the Internet are not good.
4. Some people dislike shopping online because they don’t have their own computers.
5. The writer of the passage supports shopping online.

2 . Can Money Buy Happiness?

Can money buy happiness? Different people have different opinions toward money. Some people think money is the source of happiness. In their opinion, everything in the world can be bought with money. However, others think that money is the root of all evils. For example, some people fight against each other for money, some kill others for money. All these evils are under the control of money. In my opinion, money can bring us pain as well as happiness. Only when your money is made through your honest efforts, can you live a good life. If we use money to help the poor and homeless, we will enjoy the true happiness.

Jaspreet Sethi, New Delhi, India

Can money buy happiness? It certainly doesn’t make one sad. If it comes my way, I’ll be happy.

If I had money, I’d buy a bigger car, a bigger house, a better education for my child, and a better holiday for my family.

Adam Hassan, Abuja, Nigeria

I think money can buy happiness. If you have to pay school fees, you need money. If you need a home for yourself, you need money. If you want to buy yourself something to eat, you need money. So if you don’t have money to get these things, there won’t be happiness.

If I had money, I’d get myself a home, a very good car, and a wife.

Arseny Yatsechko, Moscow, Russia

Money can buy anything. If you have enough money, you can make yourself happy. Family can change, people can change, but money won’t change.

If I had money, I’d probably spend it on a trip. I’d go to Paris or Berlin. I’m not so worried about the economy.

Richard Wicks, London, United Kingdom

I’ve seen people with untold wealth. They never seemed happy to me. But what is happiness? You know, at the end of the day, as long as you’ve got your health and can get up, brush your teeth, get dressed in the morning, and talk to one another, you’re the richest person in the world.

Miguel Josue Molano, Bogotá, Colombia

You can have lots of money, but if you don’t have happiness in your heart, you won’t be able to share it.

If I suddenly found myself with lots of money, I would try to help people, because that’s the way to become happy. I’d help people try to achieve a different type of happiness.

3 . Everyone needs help sometimes. People depend on one another. That's why communities have special people ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a home catches on fire,as the Jackson place did last week, it might be burned down and people get hurt…or worse. Think about all the other service workers we have in this community, We have people who collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary, We have road workers who put up and repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but our cars! And where would this community be without the teachers in our school and the doctors, and nurses in our community hospitals?

Think again about what we eat every day; think again about what we wear every day. We cannot produce them, but we use them all the time. 4 . If you are in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to volunteer to help you. As a director, I point. I suggest. I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.

In the 1986 movie, Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason's character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max's despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.

Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell "The Great One" about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. "So Max is sad, right?" I said.

Gleason nodded.

"And he's probably still carrying his pens with name on them ﹣ the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?"

Gleason nodded.

"So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?"

He was silent for a moment, "Why don't I throw them overboard?"

I stood up and turned toward the crew. "Hey, everybody, Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let's shoot it."

After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and smiled at me, "Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?"

5 . From video games and museums to medical training, VR(virtual reality, 虚拟现实)has been changing our lives for the better. However, this wonderful new technology has a so-far unsolvable problem: It may make people feel sick from the VR experience. The feeling of sickness, caused by VR, is called cybersickness.

"With modern VR systems, the possibility of cybersickness after only 15 minutes' experience is from 40 to 70 percent," Thomas Stoffiregen, a researcher at the University of Minnesota, US said. This sickness is probably caused by sensory conflict (感觉冲突),explained Stoffregen. When you are wearing a VR headset, your body's motion sensors cannot match the information received by your eyes. For example, when we wear a VR headset and ride a virtual roller-coaster, we think we are going up and down, but our bodies stay still. It leads to the loss of balance. Sickness is from our bodies' natural reaction to the experience. Adding to this problem, women are more likely to feel sick from the VR experience than men.

According to a study by Bas Rokers, a scientist at the University of Wiscons in-Madison, US, one reason could be the headsets. To work properly, VR headsets must match up with your PD (pupil distance, 瞳距). Since they are designed larger PD, not everyone gets the best experience. Rokers found the larger PD distance is, the greater discomfort will cause. Based on his studies, about 90 percent of women have a shorter PD than the headset is made and that's the reason why women are more likely to have cybersickness.

Cybersickness prevents the widespread use of VR technology. Once it becomes comfortable and easy to use, however, it could play a great role in our lives.

1. Which is Right about cybersickness?
A.It's a common problem with VR technology.B.It is caused by one's poor sense of direction.
C.It's more possible for young people to feel sick.D.It only happens to women and children.
2. The example of riding a virtual roller-coaster is used to _________.
A.tell what it is like to have cybersicknessB.explain how cybersickness is caused
C.tell people how to avoid cybersicknessD.show how cybersickness influences people
3. Why are women more likely to have cybersickness?
A.They have a poor sense of direction.B.VR headsets are only made for men.
C.VR headsets are too large for their PDs.D.They are easy to lose balance.
4. What does the writer think of the VR technology?
A.The VR technology has already played a great role in our lives.
B.There is still something to do before VR technology plays a great role.
C.The VR technology is comfortable and easy to use for everyone.
D.It's impossible for VR technology to be popular in the future.

6 .

As the novel coronavirus rapidly spreads to a majority of the world's nations, many countries are canceling their major sporting and cultural events.

Already, major domestic (国内的) events in China, including the National People's Congress and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, have already been postponed (推迟). Now the rest of the world seems to be following suit

The world of soccer is also being affected. In February, Italy was the first to play its league games behind closed doors (without spectators), and following the recently announced lockdown measures throughout Europe and the US, all domestic and international games have been placed on hold (暂停), as have Asian soccer leagues, including those of Japan, South Korea and China.

In addition, Euro 2020 - a major international soccer tournament for European teams - has also been canceled to allow more time for domestic leagues to conclude. When asked about the cancelations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, "The health of persons is much more important than any football game."

The outbreak is also impacting cultural events around the world. Facing Europe's largest COVID-19 pandemic, with over 86,000 confirmed cases (确诊病例) by March 28, Italy cut short its iconic Venice carnival (狂欢节) and   Milan Fashion Week show. The latter was being live-streamed from an empty theater.

Internationally, perhaps the biggest cancelation is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Japanese officials were initially optimistic that the event would continue, but given the rapidly increasing number of worldwide cases, officials had no choice but to postpone the event for the first time in history. The International Olympic Committee approved the request on March 24, delaying the event until the summer of 2021. Speaking at a press conference shortly after the decision, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, "We agreed that a postponement would be the best way to ensure that the athletes are in peak condition when they compete and to guarantee the safety of the spectators."

Supporting the move, Yvonne Maldonado, an infectious (传染的) disease researcher, told The Washington Post, "If you bring many people together, and then you ship them back all over the world: That's the perfect way to transmit. If you want to disseminate (传播) a disease, that would be the way to do it."

9 . People can’t see you when you’re speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So, the way you speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have calculated that 80% of communication over the phone is through your tone of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on how to speak over the phone.
1. Facial Expressions
Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example, if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite, if you have an angry look on your face, it can make you sound unpleasant.
2. Volume
If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly, it’ll be difficult to hear you. So, speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that you’re shouting.
3. Pace
The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example, an angry person might speak faster than normal. Or a downhearted person might speak very slowly. Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and it’ll make it easier for the other person to understand you.
4. Gestures
Gesturing can influence the tone of your voice. When you gesture, you bring more air into the lungs, which can make your voice sound warmer. Gestures are also useful to help you stress the right words or even find the words you need. The best thing about gesturing during a phone call is that no one can see what you’re doing, so you can gesture as wildly as you like!
5. Movement
If you’re feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness in your body and help your voice to sound more confident.
6. Pauses (停顿)
Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also, if you pause after giving some new information, it’ll give the other person time to understand it. At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speaker’s feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry, he might use pauses and says, “I... am... so... angry...”
1. How much of telephone communication is from the words you use?
A.20%.B.40%.C.60%.D.80%.
2. What can people do to reduce their nervousness on the phone?
A.Gesture wildly.B.Move around.C.Raise their voices.D.Make facial expressions.
3. How can pauses help people talk on the phone?
A.The speaker can show he is friendly.B.The speaker can tell more information.
C.The listener will feel confident and in control.D.The listener will have time to understand the words.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to control the speed of your speech.B.Different good ways of talking on the phone.
C.Reasons of making gestures while talking.D.How to improve communication among friends.
5. What is the writer’s opinion about telephone talk?
A.Your voice on the phone will show what you’re feeling.
B.Using too many pauses while talking will annoy others.
C.Speaking loudly makes it easier for others to understand you.
D.The words you use are more important than the way you speak.
