1 . A farmer lost an expensive gold watch in the barn(谷仓) on the farm. He looked for it everywhere but couldn’t find it. So he put a notice on the gate of the farm: Whoever finds the gold watch will get 100 dollars from me. People tried their best to look for the watch in order to get the money. However, the barn was too large and the straw(草) in the barn was too thick. It was getting dark and they were still unable to find it, so they gave up the 100 dollars one by one.

But only a small boy still kept on looking for it. He had nothing to eat the whole day. To solve the family problem, he hoped to find the gold watch and let parents, brothers and sisters have a full meal.

The night was already getting late, the boy was also tired. He was lying in the straw to have a rest when he heard a strange “tick-tick”. He held his breath at once, listened carefully, and followed the sound. He found the watch and got the 100 dollars.

2 . Do you live in a city? You’ve probably noticed how noisy and crowded cities can be. What if you could live next to a calm lake or river? As it turns out, living near water, such as oceans, lakes, rivers or ponds, can help us feel both happier and healthier. Those who live less than a kilometer from the coast are around 22 percent less likely (可能的) to have mental problems than those who live 50 km or more away, according to a study by researchers from the University of Exeter. People who visit the coast at least twice a week tend to (趋向于) experience better physical and mental health as well.

So how does “blue space” make us feel better? For one thing, water makes us feel close to nature, which is good for our health. For another thing, aquatic (与水相关的) environments tend to have less pollution and more sunlight, both of which can lead to better mental and physical health. People who get more sun tend to be happier than those who do not.

There’s also the air above the sea. After spending time near the ocean, you might find that you feel more relaxed than usual. This is because sea air is charged (带电的) with negative ions (负离子). These ions balance our levels of serotonin (血清素), a body chemical that has an influence on our mood. With balanced serotonin levels, we feel more calm and relaxed, according to Daily Mail.

Finally, people who live near water tend to be more physically active, according to the Guardian. Water sports like swimming and rowing can help us stay in shape, which in turn keeps us healthy.

5 . Empathy lets us feel another person's pain and makes us help. Do any other animals feel empathy? Scientists found that rats(老鼠)do, too. Most people don't like rats. In many people's eyes, rats are only bad. But Jean Decety and his partners at the University of Chicago did an experiment(实验). It showed that rats are kind, warm-hearted animals. They can feel each other's pain.

In the experiment, scientists placed pairs of rats in plastic cages(笼子)for two weeks. During this time, they got to know each other, Then scientists put one of the rats from each pair into a small container(容器)in the cages. The small container had a door. Many of the trapped(困住的)rats squeaked(吱吱叫)to show their unhappiness. The other rats of the pairs could see their friends clearly.

In most pairs, the free rats would become very worried about their friends. They kept trying to save their friends again and again throughout the month. Scientists put the rats' favorite chocolate in the cages, but the rats didn't eat it until they had saved their friends successfully. Scientists also found that female rats seemed to act more empathetic than male rats.

“The results are the first to show that the rats will do something to help if their friends are in trouble” Decety said. “Unlike those animals, rats can be used in laboratory(实验)studies. They will help us to learn which parts of the brain lead to empathy.”

6 . How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada's national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% teenagers can spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel this is a problem in the 2lst century.

As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates(心率)were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-vitual-reality(虚拟现实)room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people's in the other group.

The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another god example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.

Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people's everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, "forest schools" are popular. Many children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside.

And South Korea is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it's now time to start rebuilding nature.

1. The writer starts the passage by __________.
A.telling storiesB.comparing numbers
C.asking questionsD.giving suggestions

8 . The Diary of a Young Girl was written by a girl named Anne Frank. It is a true experience of a teenager in wartime (World War II, 1939-1945) and it has also become a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.

Here's one of Anne's diaries.

Friday, 10 September, 1943

Dear Kitty,

Mostly whenever I write to you, there are only pleasant things to report. Actually, they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things. However, now there is something wonderful going on. Last Wednesday evening, 8 September, we sat around listening to the seven o'clock news and the first thing we heard was: "Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated (屈服,停止反抗)!" Italy's unconditional surrender (投降)!! "Listeners, an hour ago, I had just finished writing when the wonderful news of Italy's capitulation came in. I can tell you that I have never deposited (放下) my notes in the waste paper basket with such joy!"

Still we have troubles, too, it's about Mr. Koophuis. As you know, we are all very fond of him, he is always cheerful and amazingly brave, although he is never well, has a lot of pain, and is not allowed to eat much or do much walking. "When Mr. Koophuis enters, the sun begins to shine." Mommy said just recently, and she is quite right. Now he has had to go into the hospital for a very unpleasant operation and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. Yours,

Anne

9 . It’s no secret that there is a space(空间) problem in Manhattan(曼哈顿). People build up higher and higher buildings because there isn’t much land left and there is no room to build out. So people have been building lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers(开发商) are trying to build higher and higher buildings. However, the government has made laws(法律) that don’t allow developers to build too high buildings.

Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, “what if our buildings were not tall but long?” So the founder of Oiio Studio, Ioannis Oikonomou, design(设计) a U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It would be a very thin building. It would curve at the top             and return to the ground. Oikonomous, said he thought of the great idea because he learned from a piece of news. It said that a company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he designed the Big Bend. He thought it as “the longest building             in the world”. It would be 4000 feet from end to end and would need a different lift system.

We can’t change the law,        ▲       . So if we can bend(使弯曲) our building, we would be able to build one of the most amazing buildings in Manhattan,” Oiio Studio said.

10 . Work is helpful to health. Scientists find that the hard-working people live longer than those who have no jobs. Studies show that the jobless are in poorer health than job-holders. The women have jobs are healthier than housewives.

Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from feeling lonely. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. The happiest people are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their jobs feel they are the happiest when they are working hard. They work as a bridge between their dream and reality, so they have energy every day. By work, people get to know each other. By taking part in all kinds of activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss(丧失) of work means the loss of everything. It makes people down and it will cause more illnesses.

Besides, work makes one feel hopeful and proud. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are very happy.

From the above, we can come to a conclusion: the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be.

1. People who have no jobs are ________ than job-holders.
A.in poorer healthB.happierC.healthierD.busier
2. From this passage, we can learn ________.
A.People who are busy have a lot of money.

C.People who are busy are the happiest.
D.People who are busy are the most worried.
3. What is NOT true according to the passage?
A.People who are hard-working live longer than those who are jobless.
B.Work can make people feel tired and lonely.
C.The loss of work will cause more illnesses.
D.People can get to know each other by working together.
