For kids, mornings can be busy. Sometimes, you do not have breakfast because you do not have time. There are good reasons to make sure you eat a healthy breakfast every day.

2 . Picture the scene: It’s midnight. You’re very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Will you eat it? It seems that you shouldn’t, for many reasons, including its influence on your studies.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us put on weight. But now a new study has shown that late night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains—it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
“We believe that late night eating may have an influence on the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,” Dawn Loh, PhD, a scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, “We believe the timing of when we eat may be the main cause of the damaged memory. ”
For the study, the researchers did an experiment. They looked at two groups of mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were allowed to eat either during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount of sleep and calories.
Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the scientists tried to find out whether the mice had a good memory by putting the mice in a room connected to an electric shock for some time. The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again after 24 hours had gone by, those mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn’t remember.
So think twice before the midnight snack—it might be bad for more than your weight.

3 . What’s the best thing to eat on a hot summer day? Quite a few people will say it is ice-cream. Yes, eating ice-cream with some fruit is a good way to cool down. But think before you eat. If you feel hot from playing sports, it's not the best time to eat ice-cream. If you eat ice-cream when you feel hot, it may give your stomach some problems, and you may get diarrhoea (腹泻). You can eat some ice-cream after you cool down. Just try not to eat too much at a time!
People shouldn’t eat or drink anything cold just after dinner. If you want to stay cool and healthy, oranges, bananas and pears can help.
In summer, germs (细菌) grow very fast and food goes bad easily. You should eat clean and fresh food. When you want to eat a cold dish, put in some vinegar (醋) to disinfect (杀菌) it. If you can’t finish your food and want to eat it again the next day, you should heat it enough to kill the germs in it before you eat it.

6 . We always discuss about health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help us stay healthy.
Eat a variety of foods, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite foods. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (营养) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙) to grow strong bones, and milk has a lot of it. Every day, we should drink at least three cups of milk (1,300 milligrams of calcium) when we are 9 years old or older. We should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of added sugar. Sugar just adds calories (卡路里), not important nutrition.
Listen to our body. When we are eating, notice how our bodies feel. When our stomachs feel comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes us feel uncomfortable. If we do it too often, it can make us unhealthy and fat.
Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time we spend watching TV, movies, and playing computer games. The more time we spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time we spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like bike riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

7 . Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.
Eat with others. It can help you to see others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find the food you eat is more delicious.
Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty—sometimes you are just thirsty, and you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.
Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Since you don’t eat for the past ten hours, your body needs food to get you going, so you must eat something for breakfast. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.
Eat healthy snacks (点心) like fruit, yogurt (酸奶) or cheese. We all need snacks sometimes. In fact, it is a good idea to eat two healthy snacks between your three meals. This doesn’t mean you can eat a bag of chips.
Don’t eat dinner late. With our busy life, we always put off eating dinner until the last minute. You’d better eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8—10 hours.

8 . In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner—a hot cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch (自带午餐) with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy (起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as vegetable soups and curries (咖喱) for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a student, told us, “We used to have a fast food window where we got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There’s a salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

10 . Doctors across the world tell us it is necessary to eat lots of vegetables to keep the heart healthy. But a new study in February, 2022 suggested eating a lot of vegetables may not greatly cut down the risk of heart problems.
The study is from universities in Oxford and Hong Kong, China. Almost 400,000 people took part in it. They answered questions about their lifestyle, food, and what raw (生的) and cooked vegetables they ate. The study actually found that the risk of dying from heart problems was around 15% lower for those eating the most vegetables, especially raw vegetables.
However, scientists explained that many other factors (因素) also have something to do with this 15% drop. These factors may affect (影响) our health just as much as vegetables. These include other things we eat, how much exercise we get, where we live and whether we smoke or drink. Lead researcher Dr. Qi Feng from the University of Oxford said, “Our large study did not find clear evidence (证据) that how many vegetables you take can cut down chances of heart problems.”
But does it mean that eating vegetables is futile? No. Many other scientists advise that people should still eat at least five kinds of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s because vegetables are important for keeping good health and reducing (减少) the risk of serious illnesses.
