文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了一旦你开始吃薯条,你就可能一直吃,直到吃完。这是为什么呢,科学家说这是由于一种神经元。本文介绍了关于盐分的科学研究。

6 . Once you begin to eat potato chips, you may keep eating until the bag is empty. Have you ever experienced this? Why can’t you stop eating these salty chips? Scientists said it is due to a kind of neuron (神经元).

Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston have found that some neurons can make us want to eat salt.

The neurons take note of whether our bodies are lacking sodium (钠), a main part of salt. Then, they send signals (信号) to our brain to encourage us to eat more salt, according to the Daily Mail.

How do these neurons work?

Scientists did experiments on mice. They found that when mice lack sodium, their body gives off a kind of hormone (荷尔蒙) called aldosterone (醛固酮). This hormone then makes these neurons become active.

More research showed that adding salt to meals makes people enjoy their food more, Time magazine reported. This may cause people to continue eating even if they are full.

Scientists from Deakin University in Australia asked healthy people to eat the same food for lunch for four weeks. The amount of salt in the food was changed each week. At the same time, the scientists measured how much these people ate. They also asked the people how they felt about the meals; for example, if they felt happy or were still hungry after eating.

The results showed that salt made people eat 11 percent more food and calories. When eating low-salt meals, they could control (控制) over how much they ate. “But when we add salt to that food, all of a sudden those controls are gone,” researcher Russell Keast said to Time.

9 . 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors.     1

Some people blame (责备) the fact that we are surrounded (包围) by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices.     2

There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight.     3     Because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food or they are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.

There is a third reason for this situation.     4     They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime, it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.

The above are the main reasons for this problem.     5     Besides, adults should keep them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.

A.Children these days take very little exercise.
B.So we have to encourage young people to be more active.
C.If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
D.I agree with this.
E.It’s a good idea to allow children to eat what they choose.
F.I feel there are a number of reasons for this.

If eating more healthily is one of your New Year’s decisions, maybe you should try the Mediterranean diet. In January, US News&World Report regarded the Mediterranean diet as the best diet of 2023. This is the fourth year the diet has been thought to be the top one.

According to USA Today, the Mediterranean diet is based on the eating habits in areas of southern Italy, parts of Greece, Spain and Morocco. It mainly includes plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grain: and seeds, and even puts more extra virgin olive oil. Fish and chicken are more common than red meat in this diet. That means the diet is rich in tastes but low in fat. In addition to helping people keep weight off, experts believe that the diet can make people take less risks of heart trouble and high blood pressure.

Besides, the Mediterranean diet is not only a diet, but also a kind of lifestyle. Living the Mediterranean way also means being active and sharing meals with loved ones. “Compared with others, the Mediterranean diet pays much attention to the value of friendliness and neighborliness,” said the UNESCO. “Eating together has become a very common cultural activity around the Mediterranean areas.” In Mediterranean tradition, it is natural for family and friends to eat at big tables, talking about their lives and experiences while eating together. Usually the meals can last for several hours. It’s a good time for them to be with each other as well as the enjoyable food.
