文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了一种职场现象——闷爆,介绍了表现、对员工的影响以及解决方法。

2 . “Boreout (闷爆) is different from burnout (精疲力竭) in the sense that bored-out employees rarely break down with exhaustion. Bored-out people may be present physically but not in spirit, and people can keep doing this for a good while,” says Harju, who has studied boreout for years.

Workers who realize they’re experiencing boreout may also be unwilling to flag it up as an issue to line managers or human resources. “While the behaviors that feed into burnout — overwork, drive — are appreciated and rewarded by employers, boreout reflects a lack of interest, a lack of motivation,” says Harju. “These are things that are avoided in organizations.”

There are some quick fixes, like taking on work tasks that are more interesting to you. But a 2016 study Harju and her colleagues worked on showed that people who had boreout were less likely to engage in constructive activities like trying to find new, interesting challenges at work.

What happens more often, she says, is that people will just show up at their desks and spend time shopping online, chatting with colleagues or planning other activities. She says that these people aren’t lazy, but are using these behaviours as “coping mechanisms”.

Fahri Ozsungur, an associate professor of economics at Mersin University, Turkey, who was behind the 2021 study on the health effects of boreout, points out that combating the phenomenon isn’t just down to the individual. “Giving meaning to the job is not just up to the employees,” he says. “Instead, it’s up to management to create an office culture that makes people feel valuable.”

If you think boreout is seriously affecting your health either physically or mentally, it may be valuable to ask yourself how you might be able to reselect your career path toward something healthier for you. Seek the advice from advisers, career consultants, friends and family.

“If only people take its suggestion, boreout can make a change into something else: a different career entirely, or a different role in the organization,” Harju says.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.B.To describe people with burnout.
C.To explain what burnout is.D.To tell us who Harju is.
2. Why do people prefer not to talk about their boreout?
A.They lack relevant knowledge.B.They are warned not to talk about it.
C.They may not want it to be known to employers.D.They fear to be laughed at by their colleagues.
3. What does the underlined word “combating” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Blaming.C.Trusting.D.Fighting.
4. Which of the following may Harju agree with?
A.Forcing employers to increase salaries.B.Sticking to the job until you adapt to it.
C.Trying spending more time with your family.D.Considering changing a new job interesting you.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。本文是一篇议论文。阐述的主要观点为:以积极的态度对待人生中的障碍,因为它们有益于人的成长和提升。

4 . An obstacle usually refers to a difficulty or problem that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you’re presently facing an obstacle, you have to resolve it. Some people avoid obstacles or deny their existence. Others let obstacles control them, and they feel defeated. Your attitude towards obstacles will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about obstacles.

First, obstacles give you purposes. Sometimes obstacles can reset your goals. You might have always had a particular way of doing things, or wanted to pursue certain goals; but when you’re faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn’t have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you’ll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions. Second, obstacles prepare you for the unexpected. Obstacles serve as guides for where to go next. Even though obstacles can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it’s important to realize that they don’t stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Obstacles shift your perspective.

Obstacles whether you like them or not are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new obstacles. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and address these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see obstacles as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them.

Accepting obstacles will be rewarding. It will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.

1. What does the word “obstacle” in the passage probably mean?
A.passion.B.adversity.
C.reputation.D.expedition.
2. What determines the outcome of obstacles you face?
A.Your own attitude.B.Your quick adaptation.
C.Your adequate preparation.D.Your optimistic perseverance.
3. How would obstacles result in benefits?
A.They prevent your negative emotions.
B.They give you advantages over others.
C.They make you think quickly and critically.
D.They allow you to view things from new angles.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Avoiding obstacles does harm to life.B.Loving obstacles benefits a lot.
C.Obstacles are actually unavoidable.D.Obstacles are double-edged swords.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了布谷鸟自己不会筑巢,所以总是将自己的蛋产在其他鸟类的巢里,从而让其他鸟类为自己孵化幼鸟。

6 . Cuckoos (布谷鸟) are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they don’t spend the energy building a nest, protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead the female passes these roles on to other birds. They don’t raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.

To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food, the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes, she will even destroy and remove one of the host’s eggs to make room for her own.

Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch (孵化) and begin to grow in a host’s nest, the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its foster (收养的) parents, but still continues to receive food from them.

The cuckoo imposter (冒名顶替者) is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then, the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own.

Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts’. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds’ attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrowhawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed.

1. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young?
A.Attend to eggs.B.Build a new nest.C.Depend on other birds.D.Learn feeding skills.
2. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Other cuckoos.B.Baby cuckoos.C.Birth parents.D.Host parents.
3. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter?
A.It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs in the nest.
B.It throws all the other eggs out of nest with its mother’s help.
C.It often makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest.
D.It looks much larger than other eggs in the nest before hatching.
4. What is the text mainly talking about?
A.How cuckoos fool other birds.B.How cuckoos protect their children.
C.How cuckoos destroy others’ nests.D.How cuckoos produce eggs in host nests.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了寻找雪人和大脚怪的最佳地点。

7 . These large hairy creatures have been sighted around the world, and they appear frequently in ancient folklore. Here are some of the best places you should visit as you search for Yeti and Bigfoot.

Willow Creek, California

Called the gateway to Bigfoot Country, Willow Creek is the site of the most famous Bigfoot footage—the classic photo of the dark, hairy creature traveling across the actual Willow Creek in Six Rivers National Forest. A museum in the town houses a series of casts of Bigfeet's footprints, photos, and other information and evidence about the being.

Ontario, Canada

A hunter and his wife thought it was a moose (麋鹿) call when they heard a long loud shout in the northwestern Ontario wilderness, but then they heard it again and found some big humanoid footprints. BFRO has 68 Bigfoot reports from Ontario, the most recent of which was in July 2020 when campers reported hearing howls and cracking branches near their campsite.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula

There have been hundreds of sightings of Bigfoot in the Upper Peninsula, and some witnesses claim to have seen entire packs of the ape-like creatures. The Upper Peninsula is heavily wooded and offers many areas for the monsters to hide.

Fouke, Arkansas

The small town in southwest Arkansas is known as the Bigfoot Capital of the midwestern state. A reported Bigfoot attack in Fouke even inspired a 1970s film called The Legend of Boggy Creek. When reports of the monster first made the rounds in the mid-1800s, residents assumed the creature was a survivor of the New Madrid earthquake who had lost his mind from the injury.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论的是睡眠不足对心脏健康的影响。

8 . It’s no secret that sleep is important to your overall health, but a lack of sleep could have great effects on your heart, a new study shows. The researchers said people with insomnia(失眠症)are more likely to have a heart attack.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the US, the researchers wrote in their report, noting that 10% to 15% of people in the US struggle with it. The meta-analysis of previously published research suggests that the potential association between insomnia and heart attack risk is strongest in women.

Dr. Martha Gulati, director of prevention at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, said that most of her patients are women and that insomnia is a noted risk factor for women who have had any form of ischemic heart disease. “We see it probably in 1 in 10 patients in the United States,” said Gulati, who was not involved in the new research. “It is my impression that almost everyone experiences insomnia at some point in their life. The estimate is that 1 in 2 adults experience it at some point in their life, maybe in the short term because of stressful moments.”

For their analysis, the researchers defined insomnia as a sleep disorder with three main symptoms(症状): Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep and waking early and being unable to fall back asleep.

The study also found an association between increased heart attack risk and how long a participant slept each night. Those who slept five hours or less had the highest association with heart attack risk and were 1.56 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who slept seven or eight hours. Longer sleep duration wasn’t always more protective. The study found that people who slept six hours a night had a lower risk of a heart attack than those who slept nine hours or more. “A lot of studies have pointed somewhere between seven and eight hours of sleep being the magic number for us,” another researcher said. “There is obviously variability for everyone, but too much sleep is rarely the issue.”

1. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To list a fact.B.To warn the readers.
C.To introduce the topic.D.To draw the readers’ interest.
2. What can we infer from Gulati words?
A.Insomnia is unavoidable in the short term.
B.Insomnia is a common phenomenon in life.
C.Heart attack often happens during insomnia.
D.Women are less experienced in dealing with insomnia.
3. What inspiration can we get according to the sleeping time?
A.Put quality before quantity.B.Too much is as bad as too little.
C.Bite off more than one can chew.D.Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to the relationship between insomnia and heart attack?
A.Pessimistic.B.Indifferent.C.Objective.D.Positive.
