文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是Roberto和Keith两人上班通勤时的情绪反应差异,这种差异主要受他们的情商的影响。

1 . Both Roberto and Keith have a 45-minute commute (通勤) time from their homes to their workplace. When Roberto drives, he has realistic expectations of how others drive and how long the trip should take. Overall, he is able to adapt to any unexpected challenges he may face on the road. He rarely becomes angry. By contrast, Keith drives with a tendency for becoming angry easily, partly due to unrealistic expectations of other drivers, his quickness to personalize and feel threatened by the actions of others, and his inability to calm his anger.

The difference between how Roberto and Keith experience their drive to work, especially with regard to getting angry, is influenced very much by their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is crucial for helping individuals choose constructive over destructive anger. A key aspect of healthy anger is being able to pause and reflect on, rather than react to, our thoughts, feelings, and senses associated with getting angry.

Self-regulation and empathy (同理心) are two important components of emotional intelligence, which can be a buffer (缓冲) against destructive anger. Self-regulation helps us to control our moods. Empathy helps us to recognize the humanity in others and ourselves.

Studies suggest that training in emotional intelligence can powerfully impact how anger is managed. This was supported by a three-year study of 476 young adults who showed reduced tendency of becoming angry after training. Children and adults can learn skills to boost their emotional intelligence and, by doing so, develop adaptability for dealing with various negative affect, including anger. Many workbooks offer skills in emotional intelligence to promote empathy and self-awareness regarding emotions and how they impact our beliefs and behavior.

Clearly, through training, Keith would experience greater emotional flexibility that could support a more peaceful commute to work. I firmly believe that learning skills in emotional intelligence should be the focus in helping individuals more constructively manage this highly challenging and complex emotion.

1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To tell a true story.B.To make a comparison.
C.To introduce the main topic.D.To present an important finding.
2. Which of the following is the main point of healthy anger?
A.Thinking over the annoying situation.
B.Taking action to deal with the awful situation.
C.Turning a blind eye to the unwelcome situation.
D.Expressing feelings about the disturbing situation.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards training in emotional intelligence?
A.Indifferent.B.Doubtful.C.Negative.D.Supportive.
4. What is the suitable title of the text?
A.Friends Should Enjoy Peaceful Commute
B.Drivers Need to Boost Their Emotional Intelligence
C.Emotional Intelligence Is a Buffer Against Destructive Anger
D.Emotional Intelligence Has a Powerful Impact on People’s Life

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了四道杭州的特色菜。

2 . Hangzhou dishes are one of the eight great cuisines of China. They are noted for their seasonal ingredients, elaborate preparation, sophisticated cooking techniques, and refreshing taste. A trip to Hangzhou isn’t complete without trying some of its specialty dishes. Here are a few must-try meals. Each of them has an age old story.

Dongpo Pork (red-braised pork belly)

The dish was named after a Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet and official, Su Dongpo. When Su was banished to Hangzhou, he initiated a thorough dredging of West Lake. This had great benefits for the locals. To express their gratitude, they gifted Su a lot of pork. Su added his own twist to the traditional cooking process of braised pork belly. He added yellow wine and stewed it on low heat. He distributed the dish to those who worked on the project. It became widely favored.

West Lake Carp in Vinegar Gravy

Legend has it that two brothers surnamed Song lived in Hangzhou. The elder brother was murdered by a local villain. In desperation and fear for his safety, the younger brother was forced into exile. During his farewell dinner, his recently widowed sister-in-law cooked a dish. It was both sweet and sour. She was implying that the young Song should “not forget the salt amid the sweet”. The younger brother later returned as a high ranking official, avenged his brother’s murder, and sought out his sister. The dish has been handed down from generation to generation.

Sister Song’s Fish Soup

During the Song Dynasty, a woman nicknamed Sister Song settled down alongside West Lake. She made a living selling fish soup. On a trip to West Lake, Emperor Gaozong tasted her fish soup and spoke very highly of it. The soup’s reputation spread far and wide, and it became a calling card for the city.

Sauteed Shrimps with Longjing Tea

The story of this dish relates to Emperor Qianlong. He ruled from 1644-1911. On an excursion to Hangzhou, one of his chefs accidentally dropped Longjing tea leaves into the sauteed shrimp. The lingering fragrance of the tea combined with the divine texture of the shrimp won him over. A classic Hangzhou dish was born.

3 . Why we cry with happiness showed: Responding with a negative reaction helps us deal with extreme joy. If you cry with happiness at weddings, you are responding to a happy experience with a negative reaction. The researchers believe the unusual reaction may help renew emotional balance in us and keep extreme emotions under control. The findings make it clear how people express and control their emotions, which could help improve their understanding of people’s mental (精神的) health.

Dr Oriana Aragon set out to explore the phrase “tears of joy”, which she said never made sense to her. But after studying a series of incongruous (不和谐的) expressions, she now understands better why people cry when they are happy. “People may be renewing emotional balance with these expressions,” she explained. “They seem to take place when people are struck by strong positive emotions. People, who do this, seem to recover better from those strong emotions.”

The report showed various examples of responding to a positive experience with a negative emotion, such as, a crying wife seeing the husband returning from war again, and teenage girls screaming at a Justin Bieber concert. Examples also include a baseball player who hits a home run, only to be slapped (拍) on the back by teammates, as well as when people cannot help kissing babies’ faces who they consider lovely.

Dr Aragon and her team discovered that people, who expressed negative reactions to positive news, were able to moderate (缓和) strong emotions more quickly. There is also some evidence that strong negative feelings may provoke positive expressions. For example, nervous laughter often happens when people are faced with a hard situation. We’ve seen people smiling during times of extreme sadness.

“The findings affect our knowledge of how people express and control their emotions, which is importantly related to mental and physical health, the quality of relationships with others, and even how well people work together,” Dr Aragon said.

1. What will an extremely happy person do, according to the passage?
A.He will calm down as usual.B.He will burst into tears.
C.He will jump with joy.D.He will keep silent.
2. By responding to happiness with negative reactions, people can ________.
A.express themselves carefully in a special way
B.show off their rich emotions now and then
C.renew emotional balance and control strong emotions
D.hide the true feelings under a mask of politeness
3. What does the underlined word “provoke” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Take in.B.Get over.
C.Lead to.D.Hold back.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Differences between positive and negative emotions.
B.Expressing and controlling emotions is important for humans.

D.It’s common to express negative reactions to positive feelings.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。本文讲述了作者母亲优先考虑女儿的需求,即使牺牲自己的需求,穿得破旧,体现伟大的母爱。

4 . On a busy Saturday, I was at the mall with my mom. The mall was alive with the chatter of people and the sound of music. Everywhere I looked, there were people dressed in nice clothes, laughing and chatting with their friends.

My mom, on the other hand, wore a simple dress and old shoes. Her clothes looked worn out compared to the others’. As we walked past store windows, I couldn’t help but notice the difference. I saw young girls in bright dresses and boys in tidy shirts. They looked so modern and confident.

Feeling a bit out of place, I tried to pull my mom towards less crowded areas. I didn’t want anyone to notice us or, more specifically, notice her. It wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of my mom. I just felt she deserved better.

As we walked around, we entered a store with beautiful clothes. The fabrics (面料) felt soft, and the designs were fashionable. My mom’s eyes lit up when she saw a lovely sweater. “This would look great on you,” she said with a smile.

I checked the price tag and was shocked. It was much too expensive for us. I knew my mom worked hard to make ends meet. Every penny was made use of in our life. Yet, here she was, willing to spend on a sweater for me.

Looking at her, I realized something. My mom might not have the beautiful clothes or the latest accessories (配饰), but she had a heart of gold. She always put me first, even if it meant giving up her own wants.

Suddenly, I felt a wave of warmth. I hugged her tightly. “Mom, I don’t need the sweater. I just need you,” I whispered. She smiled, “I know, dear. But it’s nice to have dreams sometimes, right?” We left the store, hand in hand, feeling wealthier than ever.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了 Buy Nothing Day以及它的设立对于我们人类的意义:不要把钱浪费在无用的东西上。

7 . Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing — shopping. And that can be a big problem.

“In a way, over-consumption (过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems,” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It’s held on the day, which is known as Black Friday — a famous shopping day in the US and Canada.

You can see the irony (讽刺) here.

Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 26 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of pollution in our lives today — bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean — seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.

The latest example is the Singles’ Day shopping craze of Nov 11, which saw a new sales record. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters, “Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste.” And it was reported that last year the Singles’ Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins Dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that there’re too many things we tow out after only using them once.

So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it’s not just to remind us to the a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun “with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.

1. What’s the authors purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A.To express the people’s love for all festivals.
B.To talk about the meaning of the festivals.
C.To appreciate the value of the festivals.
D.To bring out the topic of the passage.
2. Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day?
A.To help people save money.B.To cut the cost for daily life.
C.To prevent over-consumption.D.To set up a new sales record.
3. What’s Nie Li’s attitude towards the shopping craze?
A.Opposed (反对的).B.Supportive.
C.Unknown.D.Neutral (中立的).
4. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Creating a New LifestyleB.Buy Nothing Day
C.Festivals Around the WorldD.A Change in People’s Life
