文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了盲人自闭症学生保罗在导跑员Rebel的帮助下在多项比赛中取得胜利,保罗很感激他的指引。

2 . A fourth-grade star athlete has made headlines for keeping up with high schoolers. However, it’s not for the honor. The selfless student is a guide runner for a blind autistic (患自闭症的) teen who needs a helping hand on the cross-country track.

Rebel Hays, 11, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, stepped up as a guide runner for a ninth-grader, Paul Scot, when West Fork High School put out a call for volunteers. Paul, their student, wanted to compete.

As they ran together, the pair became good friends. “Paul and Rebel’s story is so much more than running,” said Rebel’s mother, Lou Ann. “Paul doesn’t have many friends, so Rebel doesn’t just guide him a traces. They also spend time together,” she said, telling jokes. “Paul is grateful for his young guide’s direction.” “Rebel directs me whether there’s a ditch (沟)or there are hills, who encourages me to run faster.” Paul said.

In honor of their partnership, West Fork High School wrote a post on Facebook. Posting on Oct.6, 2021, after a 5K race at Chile Pepper where the boys achieved a personal record of 21 minutes, school representatives explained, “Rebel Hays has been helping Paul all season long. He is a promising runner, but more importantly, he has a huge heart! Thank you, Rebel! Thank you a lot!”

According to Mile Split Arkansas, Paul said that his goal this year was to break 21 minutes; however, they missed it at Chile Pepper but achieved it at Yan Buren Pointer Classic, finishing with a time of 20:59:44. With the help and direction from Rebel, Paul finished 59th out of 135 runners in the 3A boys race at the state Meet in Hot Springs in early November. Paul still has one more year of eligibility (资格) for cross-country and has now set a new goal of under 20 minutes.

Experiences at a Sports Meet

I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a decent runner. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet.

The meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. We weren’t allowed to go near the VIP pavilion (看台) as kids, so I had to observe the proceedings from afar.

Large tents were provided for the young competitors opposite the VIP pavilion on the other side of the track. My school team was assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track. It was just our luck but we made the best use of what we had.

The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon. I was a pretty good jumper and no one could outclass me. The competition began, and I jumped over 4 meters! That was quite the accomplishment. I won the gold medal in the long jump.

All my schoolmates cheered for me and I promised to win in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched, holding my breath, as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

5 . A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds the fitness tracker probably does not help with weight loss.

The devices are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they measure a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health counseling (咨询) with experts to consider the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health counseling.

The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet. ”

The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的). Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly counseling, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups “showed significant improvements in fitness, physical activity, and diet,” with no major difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.

Jakicic said, “the study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to address America’s obesity. ” More information is needed, he added, to learn how to best use these devices to change “physical activity and diet behaviors” in adults who want to lose weight.

1. All the subjects in the study were asked to ________.
A.start on a high-calorie dietB.wear a fitness tracker
C.increase physical activitiesD.record their heart rates

A.Wearing fitness trackers hardly helps people lose weight.
B.Physical activity and diet have no effect on weight loss.
C.Handling obesity requires effective long-term treatments.
D.There are great differences in fitness between both groups.
3. What can we infer about the study mentioned in the text?
A.The study went on for about two years.
B.More than 120 men took part in the study.
C.Health counseling helps lose almost 6 kilograms.
D.Wearing a fitness tracker is useful for keeping slim.
4. The purpose of the text is to ________.
A.describe how the researchers were conducting the study
B.indicate regular counseling for weight control is necessary
C.convince readers to wear fitness trackers for weight control
D.warn women are more likely to suffer from weight problems
