1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们) .

One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long-distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let his sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified (被取消资格) for breaking the rule.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a yearly basis, funded by Mr. Alden, a Field Day was held in the town of Silver City. Every year the boys were in training for the races. And not only adults but boys and girls trained hard for Field Day.

There were prizes for all kinds of races — running and swimming and jumping. But the best one was a foot race, called a free-for-all, because anyone could run in it. Mr. Alden gave a prize of twenty-five dollars and medals to the winners. Sometimes a boy won the championship. Sometimes a girl. Once a fat man had won it.

On Field Day, Mike was cutting the grass for Mr. Moore in the neighborhood to earn his living expenses. Suddenly Mr. Moore stopped his car in the street and called to Mike. “Hop in,” he said. “Today is Field Day, and I want you to see the races.” Soon Mike found himself sitting on the bleachers (露天看台). By and by, a small boy climbed up the bleachers and sat beside him.

Then a man called, “Free-for-all! Come and get ready!”

Being a newcomer, Mike didn’t know what a free-for-all was. The boy next to him explained to him and pointed at the winner of last year’s race. Obviously, he was smaller than Mike, but he was older. Suddenly, Mike stood up and quietly left the bleachers. He went to the room where the boys were getting ready for the race.

“Do you want to run in the race?” a man asked him.

“Yes, I do,” replied Mike.

The man gave him some track clothes with the number 4 on the front and back.

“Where did you train?” he asked.

“I never was trained,” said Mike.

“These boys have been training all year,” remarked the man.

“Oh, I don’t think I’ll win,” responded Mike. “But I am keen to run. It’s my passion and it’s lots of fun.”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jasmine Jones is a small, quiet, brainy fifth-grader at Frederick Douglass Elementary School. Most classmates think she’s smart and cool. But an athlete? Nobody saw that coming.

Jasmine has always been the shortest among her friends, but her height never seemed a problem till she wanted to try out for the girls’ basketball team. She knew that being short was a disadvantage, but Jasmine enjoyed a challenge.

She also had a secret weapon. Her tough-but-sweet aunt Kinika, had been a pretty good college basketball player.

“Hey, auntie,” Jasmine texted Kinika one September afternoon, “any chance you can help me become a better b-ball player?”

“Yes! How about Skyland Park tomorrow at 4?” Kinika texted back.

The next afternoon, Kinika worked with Jasmine on the fundamentals — dribbling (运球), bringing the ball down court, playing defense. She also laid down some advice, “Practice is important. The harder you work, the more you will have to show for it.” Kinika said, “But the biggest thing about basketball, Jas, is to play together. It’s a team sport.”

Jasmine listened. After school, three times per week, Kinika met her at the park for practice.

In late September, the Douglass Dragons’ basketball teams conducted tryouts. During the tryout, she focused on the court, hit a few three-point shots, and impressed Coach Simone with her willingness to pass the ball. When the Dragon Girls team list was posted the next day, Jasmine’s name was on it, along with Maria, Whitney, Rachel Soon came the regular season.

The Dragon Girls lost their first three games by lopsided (悬殊的) scores, leading Jasmine to ask her aunt for some extra help. The day after the third game, Kinika stopped by to watch the team practice. With Coach Simone’s permission, Kinika worked with the players in an hour-long session, helping Maria improve her outside shots, encouraging Rachel to pass more, and showing Whitney a better way to set up before free throws. As for Jasmine, her real value was her speed, so Kinika focused on teaching her how to get to the basket quickly.

“Your aunt is the best!” The girls told Jasmine afterwards. Jasmine felt she really belonged on the team.

5 . Read the following passage. Summarize it no more than 60 words the meaning of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating.

Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.   People on all continents play it — some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.

Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one-week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.

On Saturday morning, Darla’s mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we’ll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty’s mom woke her up. “It’s time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it’s too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla’s house, then they walked to the court.

Mrs. Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs. Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs. Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.

Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball. Patty wasn’t really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn’t need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn’t want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame?” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.

Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward (胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!

In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.

Soon, too soon, it was our turn.

My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.

Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (层). Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Don’t pass to Makayla,” Olivia’s teammate Jordan whispered. “She’s not serious about soccer,” said Jordan as she adjusted her Orange Team shirt. The score was tied, 1-1, after halftime.

Thinking about what Jordan had said, Olivia got into position for the second half. As the center midfielder, Olivia loved to pass. She also loved it when all her teammates, including Makayla, had the chance to touch the ball. But Jordan was right. Makayla hardly ever took a shot.

After the judge blew the whistle (哨子) to start, Olivia received the ball from Jordan. She dribbled (运球) it, keeping it close. Jordan called for the ball, but was surrounded by the Green Team’s defense. Directly across from Olivia, Makayla waved her arms. She was all by herself. Hesitantly, Olivia passed the ball to her. But her shot missed, and the ball rolled out of bounds.

“I told you,” Jordan said, shaking her head. Probably Jordan was right. Olivia needed to find a way to pass the ball to Jordan, the team’s top scorer, to win the game.

After the Green Team threw in the ball from the sideline, Olivia received it and this time she pushed the ball to Jordan. Jordan received the ball, turned, and shot toward the far corner of the goal. Still, they failed.

As the other team set up for a goal kick, Olivia saw Makayla still standing inside the 18-yard box. The judge signaled her to move. The Orange Team wasn’t allowed there. When Makayla ran toward Olivia, she tripped and fell. “Are you OK?” Olivia asked. Makayla upped and rubbed (揉) her knees. “Yep, I know I’m still learning, but I love soccer.” “Me too,” Olivia said.

The Green Team rocketed a kick. Olivia stepped in front of her defender and trapped the ball. Jordan called for a pass, but she wasn’t open. Olivia held on to the ball. She cut right, then left, leaving a defender in the dust. With the ball at her feet, she looked up and there was Makayla, wide open in front of the net.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter (短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet, I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions. I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training, pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.

The meet lasted two days, I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track. Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track, I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colors and creating a supportive atmosphere.

The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.

That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

My turn arrived and I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run.
