1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

From an early age, Patti Wilson was told that she was an epileptic (癫痫患者). However, she was a lively and enthusiastic girl, looking at her illness as simply “an inconvenience”. She never focused on what she had lost, but on what she had left. One day, Patti said to her father, who was a morning jogger, “Daddy, I’d really love to run with you every day, but I’m afraid I’ll have an epileptic fit.”

Her father told her, “Don’t worry, my girl. I know how to handle it! Let’s start running then!”

It was a wonderful experience for the father and daughter to run together every day. After a few weeks, the ambitious girl told her father, “Daddy, What I’d really love to do is to break the world’s long-distance running record for women.” The father checked the Guinness Book of World Records and found that the farthest any woman had run was 80miles.

That year, she completed her run to San Francisco, which is a distance of 400 miles. She was wearing a T-shirt, reading, “I Love Epileptics”. Her father ran every mile at her side, and her mom, a nurse, followed in a motor home behind them in case anything went wrong. But nothing happened at all while she was running.

As a senior high school student, Patti announced that she was determined to run from her hometown up to the White House, which is a distance of more than 3000 miles away. Her classmates got behind her. They built a giant poster that read, “Run, Patti, Run!” This has since become her motto and the title of a book she later has written.

A Teacher’s Dream

When handball was introduced to Sri Lankan schools in 2010,I wanted to bring it to my school, St Anthony’s, in the remote village of Wasalakotte in central Sri Lanka. This became a challenging task as the sports teacher was unwilling to initiate anything other than traditional sports, such as cricket, rugby and basketball.

I was not a sports teacher and I had never played handball before. In fact, I was an English language teacher before assuming my post as vice principal. However, I was determined to start this game at any cost. Handball is a fascinating game which combines speed, strength, flexibility, technical precision, skill and teamwork. As a new sport, I foresaw it as a golden opportunity for our school as we had never secured a place in traditional sports.

The boys were immediately interested and 40 students aged between 13 and 19 signed up to play. I had the support of their parents. Ultimately, I managed to convince the sports teacher to agree. However, we still needed a coach.

Heshan Pradeep, a St Anthony’s old boy who graduated some nine years earlier, volunteered to coach the team. He was a member of the Air Force handball team and was happy to take on the role in his free time. He assigned exercises and drills to do in his absence.

Although handball is an indoor game, we trained outdoors as our school had limited facilities. Training started early in the morning before class and continued after school until it was dark. The boys loved the game and were enthusiastic about training.

“This handball craze will ruin your studies!” complained some of the teachers in an attempt to discourage the game. Whenever the boys were late for class after morning practice, they were scolded or punished by their teachers, but I was able to keep them cheerful.

After three months of intense training, we were able to send an under-19s boys’ team to compete with 50 other schools at the first all-island school handball tournament held in Colombo—the country’s richest city.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a bright Saturday, my peaceful lunchtime was suddenly interrupted when my dad surprised me with an unplanned idea. I couldn’t hide my annoyance as what was supposed to be a relaxing Saturday turned into a day focused on football — a sport I wasn’t very excited about.

Many of my friends loved sports, while I preferred to find comfort in the pages of a good book rather than run around on a football court. My lack of interest resulted in average performance on the team, and I often felt like I was a problem for both my coach and teammates.

Things changed last week when our coach announced a coming match against the champions scheduled for a month later. The realization that this important game would have a big audience only made me more anxious. The fear of possibly letting down the team weighed on me.

Determined to make a positive impact, I decided to practice hard every day. My motivation came from wanting to help the team and to overcome the self-doubt affecting my performance.

As the match day approached, my teammates seemed unsure about including me in the lineup (阵容). I wouldn’t have minded sitting out, but the situations were different. With one player short, they reluctantly (不情愿地) included me, and The Thunder Strikers, our team, stepped onto the field to enjoy cheers from the crowd.

The pressure was intense. The game started, and within the ten minutes, I received a warning. Before long, the referee showed me a second yellow card, forcing me to leave the field. When I got back into the game, the score was tied, and the next goal would decide the winner.

As the ball came toward me, I felt a bit scared. My teammates seemed tired, and the other team really wanted to win. With great courage, I kicked the ball. The opponents (对手), maybe not expecting much from me because of my earlier struggles, were surprised when the ball went past the goalkeeper.

The Ace

Billie Jean was always full of energy and played as well as she could. One teacher suggested she should be more “ladylike” and try not to win all the time, but her parents didn’t agree.

“Play as well as you can and be the best that you can be!” they told her.

One morning, Billie Jean’s friend Susan tapped her on the shoulder during class.

“Do you want to play tennis?”

“What’s tennis?” Billie Jean whispered back.

“It’s a fun game. You’ll love it — you get to run and jump and hit a ball with a racket (球拍)!”

Billie Jean didn’t know what a “racket” was, but tennis sounded exciting!

The next weekend, Susan took Billie Jean to a famous club — the Country Club. Then Susan handed her a strange thing looking like a net. “This is a racket. You hit a ball with it!”

Susan threw a yellow ball at her. Billie Jean frowned and waved her racket as hard as she could. She spent more time hitting the air than she did hitting the ball, but she loved playing tennis anyway! It seemed that she found out what she was going to do with her life — she wanted to be an ace of tennis in the world! When going home that night, sunburned and exhausted, she had only one question in her mind.

“Mom and Dad, can I please have a tennis racket of my own?” Billie Jean asked. Her parents looked at each other. “Money is a bit short,” her mother said. “But you can save up for one!”

注意:续写词数应为80词左右。

“What can I do to make some money?” Billie Jean thought to herself.

With her beloved racket, Billie Jean decided to practise hard to realize her tennis dream. She practised hard after school every day. Joining the Country Club and getting a professional coach contributed to her great progress. Gradually, she mastered basic rules of the game. The more Billie Jean learned, the more fun she had! She always took her parents’ words to heart and always played as well as she could. Billie Jean made it! She entered tennis tournaments and became an ace of the game — one of the most famous sports legends ever!

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jim stared at the ground and sighed in disappointment. Players from the opposing team raced past Jim, celebrating their shocking victory. They’d scored the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the game.

“Just one word to describe a loss like that,” Jim mumbled to his teammate Devin.

“Terrible!” Devin sighed. “It was a tough one.” He trotted (小步快跑) toward the middle of the field to shake hands with the winning team. Jim walked slowly behind Devin. He unhappily slapped hands with the winners, then stopped to shut his eyes as the autumn air cooled his sweaty face.

“Terrible,” he repeated to himself as he sat on the bench and pulled his jacket on. “Let’s get some hot chocolate and watch the next game,” Devin said. There were eight teams in the YMCA league, so games would go on all morning. “Sorry. I’m heading home,” Jim said, “I’ve had enough soccer for today.”

As he reached the gate, Jim glanced back to see the next two teams take the field. They were jumping and shouting, excited to play. “That was us a little while ago, before we were discouraged.” Jim thought.

So why we lost the game at last? Jim asked himself. How did such a well-played game end up with such a terrible result? It was still clear in his head: Jim had the ball deep on the Jets’ side of the field, looking for Devin or another teammate to pass to. His team had outplayed the Jets for most of the game, but failed within the last seconds.

Jim let out a deep breath. The morning was growing warmer. Perfect for soccer. Jim looked back toward the field. He couldn’t see it, but he could hear the excited voices as the game continued.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A man’s voice came suddenly from the loud speakers: “Participants in the Five-Mile Junior Fat-Tire Race, please gather behind the orange flags.”

Hannah was very excited. First prize was a blue mountain bike. On such a bike, she’d fly through the woods.

“Good luck, junior mountain bikers,” the loud-speaker voice came again. “Three, two, one, and go!”

The lead-out was a girl with red braids(辫子). She pedaled off hard down the dirt road. The racers followed behind.

The girl with red braids made a turn onto a part of single track and gathered speed. Hannah pulled up behind her, who sped up again. Hannah followed close behind her.

Hannah watched for the orange arrows(箭头)marking the course and biked through the muddy fields. At the edge of the forest, the girl was kneeling(跪)by her bike. She must have gotten a flat tire. Hannah biked faster. She wiped the sweat from her eyes, breathless. Now Hannah was close enough to see the girl putting the chain on the chain ring.

Hannah felt a jolt of energy as she passed the girl into the woods. Maybe she could win.

In the middle of a small meadow, Hannah looked back. The girl was coming up behind her at a fast speed.

Hannah entered the woods again. At a fork(岔口)in the trail, to her left, was the sign with the orange arrow. When she turned, her foot slipped off the pedal, and she accidentally kicked the sign over.

I need to stop and fix the sign, she thought. The other racers might get lost. But even as she was thinking this, her feet kept moving faster, faster.

“Hannah Anderson, winner of the Five-Mile Junior Fat-Tire Race!” a voice announced as she passed the finish line.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had always dreamed of winning the school marathon. Ever since I joined the running team in freshman year, I had trained hard to improve my speed. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. There were many strong runners in my grade, and some of them had more experience and skills than me.

The day of the race finally came. I was nervous but excited. I put on my running shoes and headed to the starting line. I saw my competitors, some of them looking confident, some of them looking worried. I tried to relax myself and pay attention to my own running. The coach gave us some last-minute advice and encouragement. He told us to do our best and not give up.

The whistle (哨子) blew and we were off. I rushed ahead, trying to get a good position. I felt the wind in my face. I heard the cheers of the crowd (人群) and the footsteps of the other runners. I kept running, pushing myself to do my best.

After running for a while, I realized that I was in the lead. I couldn’t believe it. I had never been in this situation before. But then I also felt a sense of fear. What if I couldn’t keep it up? What if someone caught up with me? What if I fell?

I tried to shake off these negative thoughts and pay attention to the finish line. But it was getting harder and harder. My legs were burning and my heart was pounding. I thought that I had lost the race. I thought that I had let myself down and everyone who supported me. I felt like giving up.

注意:1. 续写词数应为70左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But then the reason for running in the first place came to mind.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Becoming a Real Runner

I would never use the word “athletic” to describe myself. To me, athletes are people who really enjoy working out. I remember crying in middle school when I had to run a mile during a gym class. As I grew up, I would go to the gym, but I never enjoyed working out. I was too shy to run outdoors. That, I thought, was for “real runners”.

In June 2017, my friend sent mean email that would forever change my attitude towards running. He was training for a 200-mile relay and wanted me to be on his team. I would run three legs-between four and six miles each-in two days. Figuring that I would never again have the chance to work with some top runners, I immediately agreed, and started running outside to prepare.

The first run was hard. I purposefully avoided Central Park in order to stay away from “real runners”. After a few blocks, I was already breathless, and walked the rest of the way home. I called my mom; choking up and saying I had no hope of running this relay at all. But she encouraged me to keep at it, so I didn’t quit. My running went from four miles a week to eight within one month before my advanced training began.

I was fightened to go into the first training session with the team as everyone else was super “athletic”. We ran for five miles, and I was significantly slower. However, my teammates were so supportive that I felt the runner’s excitement, which I had never believed true.

One day, about two weeks after the first training, my ankle gave out while I was running in Central Park. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture (应力性骨折) in my left leg. The doctor put a cast (石膏) on my left leg and told me to stop running for two months. It took me awhile to face the fact that I was out of the race. My doctor told me that he had once been struck down by a stress fracture, and the following year, he be at his best running time in a half-marathon.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
My doctor’s words brought me hope.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork and cooperation.

During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other. The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品). “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his teammates, take it.

“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筺). To my shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball, it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing? The match is in two weeks! Do you even know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news to tell us.

I was right.

Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.
