Then, he followed me back to the small town so I could return the man's truck. I didn't have much cash on me, maybe $40, but I gave it to the man for the use of his truck.

3 . I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one — it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.
Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
McDonald’s
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.
Apple
There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.
Adidas
The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.

A 1400-year-old Peruvian method of diverting (转向) water could supply up to 100 million cubic meters of water—equal to 40,000 Olympic-size swimming pools' worth of water—to Lima each year, according to a new study published in Nature Sustainability. It's one example of how ancient methods could support existing modern ones in countries without enough water.

More than a billion people across the world face water shortages. Man-made reservoirs store rainwater and water overflow for use during drier times. But reservoirs are costly, require years to plan and can still fail to meet water needs.

Peru's capital, Lima, depends on water from rivers high in the Andes Mountains. It takes only a few days for water to flow down to the city. So when the dry season begins in the mountains, the water supply quickly disappears. The city suffers shortages of 43 million cubic meters during the dry season. It solves this with modern structures such as man-made reservoirs. These reservoirs are not the only solution, however. Over a thousand years ago, indigenous (本地的) people developed another way to solve water problems.

Boris Ochoa-Tocachi is a researcher at Imperial College London and lead writer of the study. He explored one of the last remaining water-harvesting systems in the small mountain community of Huamantanga, Peru. The system was developed even before the ancient Inca civilization.

The 1,400-year-old system is designed to increase the water supply during the dry season by diverting and slowing water as it travels down the mountains. This nature-based method is made of special canals that guide water from its source to a series of water bodies and hillsides. The water goes slowly into the ground, then flows downhill through the soil and reappears in water bodies near the community.

The researchers measured how much the system slowed the flow of water by injecting special dye in the highlands and noting when it reappeared in water bodies. The dyed water started to surface two weeks later and continued flowing for eight months—a huge improvement over the hours or days it would normally take.

I had to watch bodies from the moment when they died and the warm life left them. In the hospital and in the university, I watched the dying and the dead. Day after day, month after month, I followed death, so it was a dark and terrible time.

I built a tall mast about 150 meters high, which is higher than the tallest building in the city, to catch lightning and send the electricity down to my machine in the lab. I believed I could use that electricity to give life to things that were dead.

Then one day, the answer came to me. Suddenly I was sure that I knew the secret of life.

7 . Treasure hunts have excited people’s imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues found in a book when he wrote a children’s story, Masquerade, in 1979. He had been digging there for over a year before he came up with a new idea. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the rabbit in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. 8 . Xia boyu,70, the first Chinese double amputee (被截肢者) to have reached the top of Mount Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world, Du Juan reports.

On May 14, 2018, Xia, who is the same age as the People's Republic of china, made his dream come true by reaching the top of Qomolangma (Mount Everest) seven days after leaving Base Camp on the Nepal side of the mountain.

Success didn't come easy. He had failed to reach the 8,844﹣meter peak four times before becoming one of the few double amputees to reach the top of the world.

The first climb by a Chinese team to the peak of Qomolangma was in 1960. Xia, who was born in Chongqing in 1949, was chosen by the Chinese mountaineering team in 1974. In 1975, the second mountaineering team set off. All the teammates finally reached the top, but Xia suffered bad frostbite (W1)in his legs, which had to be amputated at the knees.

"It's beyond imagination how difficult it was to accept the fact that I would suddenly become a disabled person," Xia recalls. "I could not imagine a future of sitting in a wheelchair, perhaps forever."

When a doctor told him that with artificial limbs he could live a normal life like anyone else, and he would even be able to do a lot of physical exercise, his hopes rose and he made up his mind to climb Qomolangma again.

To prepare for his fifth attempt(尝试)on Qomolangma, every day he got up at five in the morning and completed 90 minutes of strength training at home. What is 5G?

5G stands for fifth generation, meaning the next step in the progression of technology to replace the current 4G system. 4G was the replacement for 3G, which came after 2G, and so on. The Javan tiger is an extinct subspecies of the tiger that was native to the Indonesian island of Java. Very little data was gathered about their behavior before they were driven to extinction.
