1 . We're so attached to plastic, but we're careless consumers. Waste plastic is entering our ecosystems and food chains with untold consequences. Cleaning up our polluted world of plastic may seem a noble, but thankless task. However, some people are seeing economic opportunity in the mission.

Plastic Bank, a social enterprise from Canada, is monetizing plastic recycling while empowering those most affected by the waste. It works to prevent waste plastic from entering oceans by encouraging people in developing countries to collect plastic from their communities in exchange for cash, food, clean water or school tuition for their children. After collection, plastic is weighed, sorted, chipped, melted into balls and sold on as“raw material”to be made into everything from bottles for cleaning products to clothing.

“I saw in large quantities; I saw an opportunity,”CEO David Katz told the audience at the Sustainable Brands Oceans conference in Porto, Portugal on November 14.“We reveal the value in this material,”he added.

Plastic Bank was founded in 2013 and launched on the ground operations in 2014 in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western, Hemisphere, where close to 60% of the population live under the poverty line. As result of poor waste disposal and recycling infrastructure (基础设施),plastic waste enters rivers or is burned and poses the health threats to the local residents.

The company says i has over 2,000 collectors working in the country, with its full- time collectors on average 63% above the poverty line thanks to the income they make from the project. Through its app based payment system, many collectors now have bank accounts for the first time, and are able to ultimately escape ultra poverty.

“Nothing we're doing is against the laws of physics,”said Katz. “All the technology exists for us to solve and save the world. It's only creative thought.”

2 . Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike. The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Lightning is a strong burst of electricity in the atmosphere. It can strike between clouds or between a cloud and the ground. Since lightning carries an extremely powerful electrical charge, it can be destructive and deadly. It is difficult to know exactly how many people die of lightning-related causes. European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power failure, destroy property, damage electrical equipment and start forest fires.

For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning. The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning. The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity (湿度) and wind speed. The atmospheric data was placed into a machine learning algorithm (计算程序), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.

“Once trained, the system made predictions that proved correct almost 80 percent of the time,” the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement. “It can now be used anywhere.”

Amirhossein Mostajabi, a PhD student at the institute, said current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites. “Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” he said. “This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellite or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.

The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection system. Scientists working on the Paris-based project are experimenting with a laser technology that could someday control lightning activity. The idea is that powerful, ground-based lasers can be positioned in the sky to direct energy from lightning.

3 . Mr. and Mrs. March lived together with their four daughters. Amy was very shy. Beth loved being at home. Meg looked very pretty. Jo was tall and thin and she was a tomboy(假小子). Their home was always busy and full of noise and people. Next to them lived old Mr. Laurence and his grandson, Laurie. They lived in a very large and comfortable house. But it was a house without life.

One day, Jo saw Laurie standing at an upstairs window in his house and looking down at their garden. Jo's sisters were playing in the snow there. They were throwing snowballs and having a lot of fun. But Laurie's face was very sad

“Poor boy!” Jo thought. “He's all alone. He needs some friends.” She couldn't stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to the house without an invitation?

Then one snowy afternoon, she saw Laurie's grandpa go out. This gave her an idea. She took a broom(扫帚) from the kitchen.

“What are you going to do, Jo?” asked her sister Meg.

“To clear the garden path.” Answered Jo.

When Laurie saw Jo from the window, a big smile changed his pale, sad face.

Jo laughed and shouted, “How are you? Are you ill?”

Laurie opened the window and said, “I'm better now, thank you. I had a bad cold and had to stay inside for a week”.

“I'm sorry,” said Jo. “Are you bored?”

“Yes, very.” he replied.

“Don't your friends come to visit you?”

“No. But I don't want to see anybody. Boys are noisy and they give me a headache.”

“Girls are quiet.”

“I don't know any girls.”

“You know us.”

“That's true! Can you come and visit me?” cried Laurie.

“I'm not quiet, but I'd like to come,” replied Jo. “I must ask Mother first.” She ran back into her house.

A few minutes later, she returned and rang the bell on the door of Laurie's house. A servant took her upstairs.

“Here I am!” she said brightly. “Mother sends her love and my sisters gave me this blancmange(牛奶冻) for you.”

“That looks delicious,” Laurie said. He was very happy to see Jo.

Jo looked around. There were lots of books on the shelves.

“A nice room!” she said. “I can read to you if you like.”

“No, let's talk,” replied Laurie.

“All right,” said Jo, “I can talk for hours. My sisters say I never know when to stop.”

“You have three sisters-Amy, Beth and Meg.” Laurie continued

“How do you know this?” Jo was surprised.

“You call each other's names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven't got a mother.”

Jo felt sad when she heard this

“Why don't you come and visit us?” she said, “It isn't good for you to stay in this house all the time.”

“Thank you. I'd like to come very much.” Said Laurie.

“We know all our neighbours except you.” Jo said, “I'm glad we're friends now.”

She told him about all the interesting things in her life. She said, “Besides(除了……之外) plays, I also love books.” Laurie loved books too, and offered to show her the library in the house. The library was a wonderful room. Jo loved it.

“Wow!” she said, “All those books!”

Laurie said, “A person needs more than books.”

5 . Imagine having a ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.

Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He think fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.

Scientists have been trying to grow organs(器官)in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard job. For example, liver cells(肝细胞) can grow in a lab, but he cells still need things like blood vessels(血管) to actual work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold(支架).

In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animals parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.

Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold.

They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow.

“You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive.” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.

The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.

Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.

He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin And asparagus(芦笋)could fix a broken spine(脊柱).

Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality.

7 . The story of chocolate begins with the discovery of America in 1492. Columbus was the first European to come into contact with cacao. Columbus was struck by how much value the Indians placed on them as he did not know the beans were used by currency. It is unlikely that Columbus brought any of these beans back to Spain and it was not until about 25 years later that Cortez grasped the commercial possibilities when he found the Aztecs using the beans to make the royal drink “chocolate”.

The Spanish, in general, were not fond of the bitter drink so Cortez and his followers made it more palatable by adding cane sugar and later cinnamon and vanilla were added. Spanish monks let the secret out back home and, although the Spanish hid it from their neighbors for a hundred years, finally chocolate’s popularity grew until it was their fashionable drink at the French court and the wise choice of customers at London meeting houses.

The cacao tree is strictly a tropical plant only in hot, rainy climates. Thus, its cultivation is limited to countries not more than 20 degrees north or south of the equator (赤道). The cacao tree is very delicate and sensitive. It needs protection from the wind and requires a fair amount of shade under most conditions. This is true especially in its first two or three years of growth. A newly planted young cacao tree is often sheltered by a different type of trees. It is normal to plant food crops for shade such as bananas, plantain, coconuts or cocoyams. Rubber trees and forest trees are also used for shade. Once established, however, cacao trees can grow in full sunlight, provided there are fertile soil conditions and intensive farming. With cutting and careful cultivation, the trees of strains will begin bearing fruit in the fifth year. With extreme care, some strains can be stimulated to produce good crops in the third and fourth year.

The process of turning cacao into chocolate hasn’t changed much since the Swiss made the major breakthroughs in the process in the late 1800s. First the beans go through a process of fermentation ( 发酵 ) and drying. They are then sorted by hand before cleaning and then roasting. Winnowing ( 风 扬 ) follows which removes the hard outer layers and leaves what is as the “grains”. A crushing and heating process known as Hunte’s Process is then used to remove nearly half of the cocoa butter from the nibs. This makes unsweetened chocolate. Basic eating chocolate is made from a mixture of the unsweetened chocolate with some of the cocoa butter along with other ingredients such as sugar and vanilla. The resulting product is then “purified” and this purifying gives chocolate the silky texture that we know so well. The finished result is then shaped, cooled, packaged by machine, distributed, sold and of course, eaten!

1. Why didn’t Columbus bring beans back to Spain at once when he found cacao?
A.Because he couldn’t afford to buy the cacao bean.
B.Because he didn’t know how to turn cacao bean into chocolate.
C.Because he was not aware of the monetary value of cacao bean then.
D.Because Spaniards then didn’t favour the chocolate that the Aztecs originally drank.
2. The underlined word “palatable” in paragraph 2 probably means .
A.affordableB.agreeableC.patentD.portable
3. Which of the following is correct about cacao tree?
A.Cacao trees need a lot of looking after to be used commercially.
B.Cacao trees require hot, rainy climates and adequate sunlight.
C.Cacao trees won’t produce fruit until the fifth year.
D.Cacao trees can grow well in all continents.
4. Which is the correct order of turning cocoa into chocolate?
① The chocolate is reheated to melt it, put into patterns and then cooled to make its final shapes.
② The beans are harvested on the farm.
③ Some cocoa butter is then obtained using Hunte’s Process to make cooking chocolate.
④ The cooking chocolate is then mixed with other ingredients to make the various types of eating chocolate available today.
⑤ The beans are winnowed after fermentation and drying and these two processes produce the grains.
⑥ The finished product is wrapped, sent to shops and then sold.
A.②①③④⑤⑥B.②③①⑤④⑥C.②④⑤①③⑥D.②⑤③④①⑥

9 . The story is little known, but the anthologist Allie Esiri stumbled across it while researching her new book.“It's extraordinary that it may have been Shakespeare's words that jolted he guard's humanity," she said.

After the Holocaust(大屠杀) Eva was reunited with her boyfriend, Jan. They married, moved to the US and both taught chemistry at Illinois University, Yet none of that might have happened had she not been cast in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1944. Eva never got to appear in the show as she was driven to the Theresienstadt ghetto Czechoslovakia, where 33,000 died. But it was there that she met the love of her life.

Now 95, Jan still remembers falling in love with the girl he saw helping elderly people with their luggage as they arrived. He read poetry with her and Eva would recite the lines she never got to perform. “Shakespeare was a very important part of her life. I loved hearing her recite it,”he said.

Months later Eva was saying those lines again in the Polish winter. By then, she had lost her father at Auschwitz. She and her mother were assessed by Dr. Josef Mengele and had been sent to the Kurzbach labor camp. It was there that a guard she knew as Suchy heard her lines as Titania.“He seemed to be listening to my recitations,” Eva wrote in her memoir.

The mere act of him talking to her was forbidden but Eva also noted that he spoke to her with the polite form of“you” in German. Mr. Rocek said that Suchy had no ulterior motive.“He never tried in the slightest to touch her or anything,” he said. The guard kept a watchful eye over Eva and her mother, particularly when the inmates were marched toward the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. Knowing this was a path to death, Suchy approached Eva's mother Anna early one morning and told them to escape. Eva, Anna and three others fled into the woods.

Esiri, who includes the story in her book Shakespeare for Every Day of the Year, says:“You wouldn't think those conversations in concentration camps had any human moments.”Michael Dobson, professor of Shakespeare studies at Birmingham University, said: “It's what culture's for. For example, he combined “radish” with “shark” to get “radishark”. “Lion” and “broccoli” became “broccolion”. He also created “umbrellaphant”, a mixture of the words “umbrella” and “elephant”.

Jack Prelutsky says that children like his poems because he writes about things they care about. Poetry researchers say that Jack Prelutsky's poems recognize children's feelings. An example of this is the poem My Sister Is a Werewolf which is about how it feels to be different.

Jack Prelutsky also writes poems about American holidays. His poem It's Halloween is a very famous one about the holiday celebrated at the end of October.
