文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国及其文化对西方设计师的灵感启发。

1 . For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creators (创造者).

“It’s no secret that China has always been a source (来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion (时尚) shows.

Earlier this year the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art , with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics (美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.

“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion —they are central to its movement.” Of course, only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China — some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galiano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.

For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China —its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.

3 . Elvis Presley enjoyed great success and popularity in the mid-1950s when he introduced his new style of R&.B- rock ‘n’ roll. Teenagers in America and Britain loved his rock ‘n’ roll music. The USA was the main place for popular music until 1962 when four musicians from Liverpool, England, started to perform. They were the Beatles, and they created a new form of rock ‘n’ roll music called the “Mersey Sound”. The name comes from the river Mersey in Liverpool. Soon the Beatles became very successful.

During the 1960s some young people became unsatisfied with the traditions and lifestyles of society and tried to develop those of their own. 4 . When I first arrived in Costa Rica, I always heard people saying, “pura vida”. Translated from Spanish, it means “pure lie”. It’s used as a greeting and to describe how things are going. It can describe a person or life in general. It’s usually said with a big smile, meaning everything is good. And I heartily agree.

I consider Costa Rica to be my second home. I first went there in 2005 to help start a small family business, and to this day I return often. It’s hard not to fall in love with this country. I see beautiful beaches, wild forests and breathtaking views everywhere. The wildlife is especially amazing! I never know what I’ll see right from the window of my guesthouse. It’s a country that helps me see the good in everything.

When I’m in Costa Rica, I live in Montezuma, which is on the ocean near Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. This little town is an out-of-the way tourist destination. Getting there can be an adventure, but it’s all pura vida !

People often ask when they should visit Costa Rica. I always answer, “Do you want to come during the dry season or the green season?” The dry Season starts in December and is the perfect time to enjoy blue waters and sandy beaches. However, the sun is very strong, so use lots of sunscreen.

When the rains return in May, the green season begins. It’s the perfect time to see wildlife and so much more. I love watching wildlife so the green season is my personal favorite.

Keep an eye out at the beach. Several species of turtles (海龟) live on Costae Rica’s beaches. I suggest supporting the organizations that are working to protect by taking a tour of their nesting sites.

When I was in middle school, I became blind. Suddenly thrown into a world of darkness. I was troubled by frustration and self-pity. Depression consumed me and I was frightened to try anything challenging.

Imagine my surprise when my teacher asked me to enter a speaking contest. I rejected it out of hand. Among so many students, why did she pick me? I was an average student. blind and plain-looking. Anyhow. she insisted that I go for it. Her reply:“Because I believe you can deliver a good speech. You are more capable than you imagine!” Encouraged by her words,1agreed to give it a shot

I decided on a fictional mole (鼹鼠) as my topic. It was a cute creature with poor eyesight mostly living underground, digging holes and helping get rid of pests. Not a brilliant idea, but unique; and undoubtedly a relatable tale.

What did the mole think, as he fought his way in the darkness? Would he get scared? Have second thoughts? Want to quit? It struck a chord immediately. I got exhausted from preparing the speech. I had doubts about my choice. I wanted to escape from reality. But, like the blind mole. I kept it up. I doubled my efforts. I checked out books from the school library. I referred to some great speeches. I turned to my father for guidance.

A week before the competition, I presented my speech to my teacher. She smiled, saying “Good. Now, polish your writing and practice your delivery.” I couldn’t remember how many times I made adjustments to my writing. Nor could I recall how I practiced it over and over again, with mixed feelings. “Could my message get across to the audience?” “How would they react?” Tons of questions crowded into my mind.

9 . A study published recently shows that tomato fruits are able to transmit alerts to their mother plant when attacked by caterpillars.

Plants have a large number of chemical and hormonal signaling pathways, which are generally transmitted through the sap (树液). Given the fact that fruits just hang from the main plant before ultimately falling off and sap typically only runs from the plant to the fruit — not back and forth between the two — it has long been unclear whether or not fruits can transmit information to the plant.

To address that question, scientists at Brazil’s Federal University of Pelotas placed tomato plants in a Faraday cage. Electrodes (电极) were attached to the ends of the plants’ branches at the points where they connected to the fruits. Then they measured electrical responses within the branches before, during and after a 24-hour period in which the fruits were attacked by caterpillars. Machine-learning-based algorithms were used to identify patterns in the signals.

It was found that there was a “clear difference” between the signals before and after caterpillar attacks. Additionally. defensive biochemical responses were observed throughout the plants’ bodies, suggesting that they had been triggered by signals sent by the fruits. There searchers gave the following explanation. The tomato fruit, sensing a nearby insect, released electrical signals to reach the rest of the plant. These warnings impulses were received by the main plant and as a result, the rest of the plant got prepared to fight off the unwanted invaders. The tomato fruit made sure that the plant produced chemicals that were unpleasant to taste, so that hungry caterpillars stayed off the fruit.

The scientists now plan on investigating whether other fruiting plants behave in the same manner as tomatoes, and whether their fruits respond to threats other than insects. They believe understanding how the plant interacts with its fruits, and the fruits among themselves, may bring insights into how to make use of this communication for enhancing fruit quality, resistance to pests and shelf life after harvest.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了研究人员已经开发出一种新的测年方法来准确地确定中国莫高窟古代壁画的年代。

10 . Mogao Grottoes is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor along the ancient Silk Road in Dunhuang, China. Until now, most mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes have been dated by directly referring to the mural texts or historical documents. However, some are still left with the creation era (年代) uncertain due to the lack of reference materials or the disagreement of art experts.

The drawing style of mural paintings was changing throughout history and can be learned and quantified (量化) through painting data. A new dating method has been developed by encoding (编码 )the drawing styles using visual codes learned through deep learning. This new method successfully discovered the creation era of six mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes.

With the help of experts from Dunhuang Academy, seven mural paintings from two grottoes (No. 205 and No. 206) were chosen as subjects for this dating research.

To figure out the creation era of these paintings, Qin Zou, a researcher from Wuhan University, collected 3,860 mural paintings from 194 different grottoes with confirmed creation-era labels. To find the visual codes that can identify the era in these paintings, the authors built a deep convolutional neural network(卷积神经网络)and classified these painting images into the right eras. Based on the classification model, a dating method was built and applied to date the seven paintings.

Six of the new dating results were approved by experts from Dunhuang Academy. “These dating results are correct and the method is great,” said Mr. Hui-Min Wang, a distinguished expert from the Archaeological Institute of Dunhuang Academy.

“To the best of our knowledge,” wrote the researchers,“ this work represents the first account of a scientific and quantitative manner to support the era prediction and reduce the uncertainties in dating ancient paintings by using deep learning.

1. What might be a reason for some murals remaining undated?
A.Variety of the drawing stylesB.Errors of historical literature
C.Shortage of reference materialsD.Disagreement of historical documents.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Why the drawing style is always changingB.What a new dating method looks like.
C.How painting data are learned and quantifiedD.Whether a dating approach should be applied
3. Why does the author mention the example of Cave No. 205 and No.206?
A.To compare two different drawing styles
B.To present the application of visual codes
C.To explain the creation of the classification model
D.To analyze the main features of the paintings
4. What do the researchers think of the new method?
A.It is a breakthroughB.It classifies drawing styles
C.It brings many uncertaintiesD.It makes accurate predictions
