Several days ago, local News Channel reported a story between a mother and her son. The mother was a single woman who had been feeling a great deal of anger and bitterness due to her financial and psychological problem, causing her emotions to be unpredictable. Occasionally, she may not pay enough attention to her son or couldn’t respond to his requirements timely. Sometimes, she would even pour her negative emotions onto her child, which made him feel helpless. In fact, this child is a very outstanding and caring boy.

That day, the mother directed her anger towards her child again because of some small matter. Although the child did not resist, the mother still drove the child out of the house, slammed the door shut and left the child outside to reflect (反省).

It was when the mother became calm and a little regretful that she opened her door and found her child missing. Anxious and scared, she searched everywhere, but the child was nowhere to be found. Her anxiety was gradually increasing.

The worried mother thought of seeking help from the police. Quickly, she went to the police station and explained the situation to the officer on duty. The police officer explained that, as a general rule, they couldn’t file a case for a missing child within the first 24 hours. However, they could provide assistance in other ways, such as posting the child’s photo on social media platforms to expand the search area.

After expressing gratitude for the police officer’s kindness, the mother continued searching for her child. Despite trying various methods, the mother still couldn’t find the child. Unexpectedly, the child was wandering in the streets, he felt lost and alone, not knowing where to go or what to do. He felt the tears forming in his eyes but refused to let them down. 文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了被称为“读书女士”的威廉姆斯发现有的学生接触书籍的机会很少,萌生了为学生捐书的想法,并一直为了她的“百万捐书”的目标而努力中。

5 . A librarian, Jennifer Williams’s mother read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to kindergarten (幼儿园),” Williams said. “Until we went to college.”

When Williams, now 54, become a primary school teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But she realized that some kids had limited access (使用的机会) to books.

“It’s very obvious to teachers of young children which kids are read to versus kids who are not,” she said. To Williams, the solution (解决办法) was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of an event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.

“My husband was like, ‘Wow, congratulations,’ and I was like, ‘Well, anybody can do that,’; she said. “I told him, ‘I want to give away a million books.’”

It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bleachers (露天看台) if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.”

So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. “I’ve lived in this town for 35 years,” she said. “My community has come together and said, ‘You’ ve always helped us, now let us help you.’”

Before long, as news of Williams’s project spread, strangers started leaving books on her front porch (廊). As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools and little free libraries in Danville.

In the four years she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78,000 books — only 922, 000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few options.

“Reading can take you anywhere,” she said. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

1. What did Williams notice when she encouraged her students to read?
A.Some of them disliked reading.
B.Some of them had few books to read.
C.Some of them preferred to read themselves.
D.Some of them began reading in kindergarten.
2. How did Williams feel about her achievement in 2017?
A.She was disappointed
B.She wasn’t confident.
C.She wasn’t satisfied
D.She was stressed
3. How did Williams’s community respond to her project?
A.They were rather uncertain.
B.They were ready to lend a hand
C.They thought it was unachievable.

4. What does Williams plan to do?
A.Set up a free library.
B.Travel around the world.
C.Keep doing what she does.
D.Ask her students to take learning trips

6 . When you think of Tokyo as a place to go on holiday, your mind will most likely turn to electronics, shopping and delicious food. However, one of the more unusual tourist spots in this city of 9.2 million is the Tsukiji Fish Market, which has been selling fish for over 400 years right in the centre of this busy city.

This is no ordinary market. It opens at 3.00 am when fish and other sea life caught from the oceans, seas and rivers from all over the world are delivered to 900 fish dealers. Over 400 different types of seafood are available from cheap seaweed to the world’s most expensive caviar. It is most famous though for the striking tuna auctions (金枪鱼拍卖) that take place between 5:20 am and 10:00 am.

Over 2, 000 tons of marine produce are sold every day. This amounts to over US $5.9 billion of business per year.

The fish market is divided into two different places. The inner market is where most of the wholesale business is done. Only registered (注册的) traders are allowed there, and that’s where the famous tuna auctions take place. In the outer market, retail (零售的) shops and restaurants are open to the general public. There you can taste some of the freshest sashimi in the world as long as you like uncooked fish for breakfast. Given that the market operates from such an early hour and most of its business is completed by mid-morning, it is surprising to find that the fish market has become a highly popular tourist attraction. Because it is so busy, accidents have happened in the past, so the number of tourists is restricted each day. But once inside, they are able to see some of the most expensive frozen tuna and swordfish being examined by the experts and then cut up with large saws (锯子).

1. What is the Tsukiji Fish Market best known for?
A.Its fair prices.
B.Its tuna auctions.
C.Its striking trading amounts.
D.Its different types of seafood.
2. In what way is the inner market different from the outer one?
A.The quality of fish.
B.Their different sizes.
C.The number of fish traders.
D.The different means of selling goods.
3. What does the author think of the market’ s great popularity among tourists?
A.Unexpected.B.Reasonable.C.Exciting.D.Laughable.
4. What does the underlined word “restricted” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Equal.B.Changeable.C.Limited.D.Certain.

Bruna was born into a family of publishers in Utrecht. According to The Guardian, he created more than 100 posters and around 2, 000 book jackets for his family’ s company. His first Miffy books, which were inspired by a story he told his own son, were published in 1955 with Miffy going under the name Nijintje. He goes to the essence (本质) of things, and then of course there are his very strong, powerful primary colours. Even today if you see them in a store, you would think: ‘Hey, this looks different to a lot of other things out there. There is no clutter (混乱); it’s all very clear.’”

Bruna was loved most of all in his birthplace, Utrecht where, as one fan pointed out, there is even a traffic light shaped like Miffy in Bruna’ s honour. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了一个名为“Affective Health原型机”的新发明,可以解读我们皮肤产生的生物信号,可以用来观测我们的情绪变化。

8 . An international team of researchers from Sweden and the UK have developed an innovative way of interpreting biological signals produced by our skin. Using data obtained from a Philips wrist-worn wearable sensor device that can also measure movement, the researchers’ system displays information in the form of colourful spiral graphics (螺旋图形) in real time on a smartphone, as well as a recording of data, for the wearer to interpret and reflect on.

The prototype (雏形) visualisation system, called ‘Affective Health’, was developed by experts in Human-Computer Interaction looking into how new and emerging computer technologies can be used to design engaging visualisations on smartphones.

A study group of 23 people were given the Affective Health prototype to use for a month. Importantly, the researchers purposely did not tell the participants what the devices were useful for. Instead, they gave guidelines that Affective Health could collect information relating to both physical and emotional reactions, how increased sweating increased the conductivity, and how this was represented by different colours. The participants were left to decide the best ways of using the technology.

The researchers found that this open design stage of the study led to some participants using the system as a tool to measure and help manage their stress levels. While others, including outstanding athletes, used the device to get information on their training and recovery programmes. Other uses included logging information on their lives and tracking emotions. But interestingly, few would use the technology for more than one purpose.

Although the open design phase helped reveal several different practices Affective Health prototypes could be used for, the prototype lacked some of the functions needed to make it a good tool for a specific role—such as a sports training system, or as a stress management tool. The researchers found the need for a second, more tailored step in the design process to make devices specific to particular roles.

1. What were the participants unaware of about the prototype?
A.Its function as a measuring tool.
B.Its reactions to physical activity.
C.Its colourful spiral graphics.
D.Its specified uses.
2. What interested the researchers?
A.People used the device quite differently.
B.Few used the device to help better themselves.
C.Many considered the device a single-purpose tool.
D.Many purposely avoided the device’s certain functions.
3. What can be learned about Affective Health?
A.It has a rising market share.
B.It causes trouble for users.
C.It lacks competitiveness.
D.It needs improvement.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Sweat, a Mood Detector?
B.Time to Reflect on Ourselves?
C.Colourful Sensors Gain Popularity
D.Technologies Interpret Biodata from the Skin

Astronomers have published a major finding    1    (recent): A black hole has been releasing energy from a small star    2    was shredded (吞噬) in 2018, after two years in which it didn’t emit (发射) any such material.

“Super unusual,” said Yvette Cendes, an astronomer at Harvard. “We’ve never really seen this before to this degree.”

Researchers made the    3     (discover) when they used a    4     (power) radio telescope facility to check some two dozen black holes where stars had been shredded after     5    (come) too close to them. Such happenings    6    (call) tidal disruption (潮汐破坏) events, or TDEs.

What they found was that one of the TDEs was emitting energy at an unusual speed    7    at a very surprising time: more than two years after the event.

This behavior is different from what has been observed in black holes before, in two ways. First, the timing: it’s more common    8    (see) radio emissions from black holes within the first few months after swallowing a star. And second, the energy emitted in this case doesn’t quite fit in    9    what astronomers have seen before.

In most cases of black holes swallowing stars, perhaps 99%, the outflow is lower in energy. And in 1% of cases, that outflow, at about half the speed of light, rarely    10     (occur).
