2 . Robots can deliver food on a college campus and hit a hole in one on the golf course, but even the most advanced robot can’t perform basic social interactions that are vital to everyday human life.

MIT researchers have now added certain social interactions to a framework for robotics, enabling machines to understand what it means to help or hinder (阻碍) one another, and to learn to perform these social behaviors on their own. In a simulated (模拟的) environment, a robot watches its companion, guesses what task it wants to accomplish, and then helps or hinders the other robot based on its own goals. The researchers also showed that their model creates realistic and predictable social interactions. When they showed videos of these simulated robots interacting with one another to humans, the human viewers mostly agreed with the model about what type of social behavior was occurring.

Equipping robots with social skills could lead to smoother and more positive human-robot interactions. For instance, a robot in a nursing home could use these abilities to help create a more caring environment for elderly individuals. The new model may also enable scientists to measure social interactions quantitatively (数量上), which could help psychologists study autism (自闭症) or analyze the effects of antidepressants (抗抑郁药).

“Robots will live in our world soon enough and they really need to learn how to communicate with us on human terms. They need to understand when it is time for them to help and when it is time for them to see what they can do to prevent something from happening. This is very early work and we are barely scratching the surface, but I feel like this is the first very serious attempt for understanding what it means for humans and machines to interact socially,” says Boris Katz, leading research scientist.

1. What can robots in use at present do?
A.Talk with humans freely.
B.Measure social interactions.
C.Perform various social skills.
D.Accomplish basic instructed tasks.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Opinions about robots having social skills.
B.Ways of developing robots’ social skills.
C.Significance of developing robots’ social skills.
D.Purposes of equipping robots with social skills.
3. What does Boris think of the research into robots’ communication skills?
A.Challenging but promising.
B.Shallow and time-consuming.
C.Successful but old-fashioned.
D.Urgent and accurate.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Future Robots on CampusB.Giving Robots Social Skills
C.New Research into RobotsD.Linking Robots and Humans

3 . Manfred Steiner had a successful and productive career as a doctor, helping generations of medical students learn about hematology (血液学). But all along, he felt that he should be doing something else: studying physics. At age 89, he has finally fulfilled that dream, earning his Ph. D. in physics from Brown University.

“I always had this dream: Someday I would like to become a physicist,” Steiner said.

Steiner was a teenager when World War II ended. By then, he was fascinated with physics. On the advice of his family, he decided to pursue a medical career instead. But during his studies, physics still tugged at him.

“When I was a medical student in the early 1950s, I used to slip into the physical institute, which was very close to the medical school,” he said, “and listen to some talks there because I was so interested in quantum physics (量子物理学), the new stuff at that time.”

It was only after Steiner retired from his career in medicine in 2000 that he was able to officially occupy himself with quantum physics. He started taking classes at MIT. He had to do a lot of physics classes at MIT before being allowed to start graduate studies. He transferred to Brown, to minimize his commute (通勤).

Steiner worked slowly — he’s a grandfather who likes to spend time with his family, and health issues have been a concern — but the credits kept piling up. “You know, it took a long time,” he said. “There were medical problems in between that were very serious. But fortunately, I’m here now and I’ve overcome these problems.”

Despite fulfilling a long-held dream of becoming a physicist, Steiner says he doesn’t regret spending most of his life in academic medicine. He also has some advice to offer: “All the young people, if they have a dream, follow that dream. Don’t give up on it.” If it doesn’t work out, he said, they can go into something else. “But first, follow your dream.”

1. What does the underlined part “tugged at” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Confused.B.Attracted.
C.Benefited.D.Challenged.
2. When did Steiner start to devote himself to the study of quantum physics?
A.When World War Ⅱ ended.B.In the early 1950s.
C.In 2000.D.At age 89.
3. What can we know about Steiner?
A.He is a brave dream-seeker.
B.He regretted learning medicine.
C.He learned physics all by himself.
D.He liked working alone at a slow pace.
4. What lesson can we learn from Steiner’s story?
A.You can’t judge a book by its cover.
B.A good beginning makes a good ending.
C.A young idler, an old beggar.
D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一款噪音相机能够记录违反噪声规则的司机的车牌号。

4 . Officials in New York City are using technology to cut down on noise on city streets. Some of the strongest rules have been released to limit noise on city streets. Cameras equipped with radar sound collectors identify loud vehicles in an effort to catch drivers violating noise rules.

The new devices record the vehicle numbers of offenders, who then receive a violation notice in the mail. Owners face fines of $800 for a first noise offense. Some could be required to pay up to $2,625 if they have three violations and ignore court hearings.

Evidence is clear that noise affects not only hearing but mood and mental health, not to mention possible links to heart disease and blood pressure. “You listen to the noise out there, it is nonstop — the horns, the trucks, the sirens,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently blamed an expressway for noise and illness. “Noise pollution makes it hard to sleep and increases the risk of chronic (慢性的) disease.”

However, some people in the city say the government efforts to quiet loud vehicles have gone too far. Phillip Franklin, a 30-year-old car lover from the Bronx area of New York, launched an online effort to protest noise rules. “The majority of us live here in New York City, where noise is a part of our daily lives. Quiet vehicles can also present dangers to inattentive individuals walking around New York City,” said Franklin. He also noted that fixing potholes (路面坑洼) is a lot more important than going after noisy cars.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said loud noise can cause immediate harm to one’s ears. Even with sound barriers, close-fitting windows and noise-reducing materials, there is only so much that can be done to reduce sound levels in the city. Many New York residents have simply learned to live with the noise. The local authority now has plans to expand the use of technology to strengthen noise rules. So far, at least 71 people have received fines for operating cars or trucks that make too much noise.

1. What can we learn about noise from paragraph 3?
A.Noise has no influence on mental health.
B.Noise is harmful to human beings.
C.Noise must lead to blood pressure.
D.Noise is difficult to be found.
2. What was Franklin’s attitude towards the noise rules?
A.Favorable.B.Tolerant.C.Indifferent.D.Disapproving.
3. What does the local authority plan to do?
A.Fix potholes to improve road safety.
B.Apply the new technology on a larger scale.
C.Raise the allowable noise standard for vehicles.
D.Encourage residents to use noise-reducing equipment.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment.B.Health.C.Education.D.Science.

文章大意:本文是说明文,主要介绍了受到网络欺凌的孩子们的表现行为以及应对网络欺凌的一些方法。

5 . Cyberbullying (网络欺凌) is the use of electronic communication to threaten or insult someone. A child can be involved in cyberbullying in different ways. They can bully, be bullied, or witness the bullying of others. The more digital forms of communication a child uses, the more exposure he or she may get to cyberbullying. Parents, teachers and other adults need to be aware of children’s online usage. Some warning signs that a child may be involved in cyberbullying are:

●Spending much more or less time on electronic devices, including texting

●Hiding their screen when others are near, and avoiding discussion about what they are doing on their device

●Closing social media accounts and opening new ones

●Avoiding social situations, even ones that were enjoyed in the past

●Becoming depressed, or losing interest in people and activities

Cyberbullying is like other forms of bullying and should be handled in a similar way. If a child is being cyberbullied, adults should support the child being bullied and tell the child doing the bullying that cyberbullying is something serious that should be stopped.

If a child sees hateful content online, there are a few easy ways they can deal with it. The child could report the content anonymously (化名地), as hateful speech goes against most websites’ principles of service. They can also block the person from posting abusive content. While ignoring posts might seem easier than blocking someone, it will not make the problem go away.

Adults can try to make their kids put themselves in the others’ shoes and consider how other people feel. They should see whether more help is needed for those involved, like speaking to a guidance counselor or mental health professional.

Cyberbullying may be impossible to stop completely, but parents could watch their child’s behavior and Internet time.

1. In which situation is cyberbullying most likely to happen?
A.A lady is doing online shopping.
B.A child is chatting on the Internet.
C.A student is attending a lesson online.
D.A teenager is watching a film on the Internet.
2. In what way might a child being bullied react?
A.Get away from his or her cellphone.
B.Share his or her social media accounts online.
C.Start bullying other kids on the Internet.
D.Avoid taking part in activities and meeting people.
3. What can parents do to help children suffering cyberbullying?
A.Post the content of cyberbullying online.
B.Ignore the person doing the cyberbullying.
C.Show mercy and close their social media accounts.
D.Pay attention to their behavior and online time.
4. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To explain what cyberbullying actually is.
B.To warn some children to stop cyberbullying.
C.To give some advice on how to handle cyberbullying.
D.To persuade parents to care more for their children.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了机器学习的概念、分类及应用。

7 . Machine learning is a way of teaching computers to do tasks. In the past, to do anything computers depended on detailed, step-by-step instructions written by a person. But with machine learning, computers pick up new skills on their own, using examples or experience. This makes machine learning a powerful form of artificial intelligence, or Al. AI is the ability of a machine to think or learn like a person. AI systems power many kinds of machines — from smartphones to robots.

There are a few types of machine learning. The most common is supervised (监督) learning. In this method, a computer is fed lots of labeled training data. For instance, it may look at many photos of dogs. Each photo might be labeled with the dog’s breed (品种). By studying those photos, the computer learns what each breed looks like. Then, the computer can pick out dog breeds in new, unlabeled photos. The more data the computer studies, the better it gets at its task.

Another important kind of machine learning is reinforcement (强化) learning. Using this type of learning is sort of like training your dog to do a trick. The computer learns to achieve some goal by interacting with its environment. When the computer makes a choice that brings it closer to its goal, it gets a virtual reward. Through trial and error, the computer learns to make better choices. This type of machine learning has helped computers master difficult games like Go and StarCraft II. It has also been used to teach self-driving cars how to get around.

Machine learning has helped create technology all around us. It powers language translators and search engines. When your streaming services recommend new shows you might like, that’s machine learning at work. Machine learning systems also organise posts in social media feeds. They even help diagnose diseases. In many ways, the problem-solving power of machine learning is reshaping the world.

1. What does the underlined phrase “pick up” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Update.B.Explore.C.Require.D.Acquire.
2. Why does the author mention dog training in Paragraph 3?
A.To encourage self-learning.B.To show the love for dogs.
C.To explain an idea clearly.D.To voice his views on AI.
3. Which word best describes the author’s attitude towards machine learning?
A.Positive.B.Disapproving.C.Doubtful.D.Uncaring.
4. What can we learn about machine learning?
A.It’s different from AI technology.B.It makes us further know dog’s breed.
C.It will take place of human translator.D.It has been applied widely in daily life.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了2022北京冬奥会人工造雪的相关情况。

8 . Anyone watching the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China has seen lots of snow-man-made snow. Since the area gets little natural snow, this is the first time the Winter Olympics is taking place on almost 100% artificial(人造的)snow.

2022 Winter Olympics was held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yangqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow.

That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry. That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir(水库)which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes.

An Italian company called TechnoAlpin created the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in 2022 Winter Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for 2022 Winter Games took seven weeks.

Still, the machines that make artificial snow are quite advanced and they can make several different kinds of snow depending on what’s needed for each sport. For example, the snow they make for downhill skiing is different from the snow made for cross-country skiing.

In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, roughly 90% of the snow was man-made.

As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”

1. Why do the areas like Beijing fail to get much snow?”
A.They are far from the desert.B.A reservoir was built there.
C.It’s usually too dry in winter.D.Mountains surround the areas.
2. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Materials used for snow making.B.Efforts to create artificial snow.
C.An Italian machine producer.D.The cost of laying pipes.
3. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Games.B.Machines.C.Athletes.D.Workers.
4. What can we infer from Michael Mayr’s words?
A.Artificial snow plays a key role in winter sports.
B.Climate change is getting worse due to artificial snow.
C.It’s far more difficult to fight against global warming.
D.Man-made snow makes winter sports more popular.

9 . World number one Ashleigh Barty surprised tennis on Wednesday by announcing her retirement (退役) from the sport aged just 25, saying she had realized her dreams and was “spent physically”.

Barty dropped the bombshell weeks after becoming the first home Australian Open champion in 44 years and so winning a Grand Slam (大满贯) crown on three different surfaces.

In a tearful social media video message with her close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua, Barty said she was “so ready” to call it an end after achieving her life-time goal to win Wimbledon last year.

“Success for me is knowing that I’ve given absolutely everything I can. I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself,” said the three-time Grand Slam winner.

She began playing tennis as a child in the Queensland state capital Brisbane and went on to win the junior Wimbledon title as a 15-year-old in 2011.
