2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We’ve learned something from movies that kids love a good adventure. It’s not too often that a group of youngsters go on a mission and actually come back as heroes. But that’s exactly what happened in the story below.

It all started when an elderly woman went missing. According to numerous experts on the elderly, it’s common for aging men and women to lose their way. It primarily comes down to unstable activity within a particular part of the brain. That causes direction loss and confusion, making it difficult for them to find even known locations.

A group of young kids decided to go bike riding, just as they had hundreds of other times. It was an ordinary day just like any other. With the weather beautiful where they lived in Sacramento, California, this was a perfect way to have fun.

While out and about on their bikes, a police officer approached the kids. He explained to them that a 97-year-old woman from the area had gone missing. So, he asked them if they’d keep their eyes open for anything unusual. They decided to try to find her.

Kids, are always up for a challenge. That’s when Logan, Hope, Kash, and McKenna decided to look around. Although they were hopeful, they really didn’t know if they’d find her. But they were very determined to do their best.

Off they went. So, that’s when the four young kids thought it would be best to ride their bikes up and down the streets. But they did a lot more than that. They rode through parks, over hills, and anywhere else they could think of to try to find the missing woman.

What started as more of a game slowly turned into a serious search and rescue. These kids slowly began to understand just how terrible the situation was. So, they went throughout several neighborhoods. They were now on a mission to succeed.

The area of Sacramento where the group lived was quite large. And with bikes, they were limited to where they could go. But that didn’t matter—they wanted to cover every inch hoping to find her.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事

Many years ago, there was a king who often thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea. Early one morning, the king disguised (伪装) himself and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid a diamond under the stone .Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.

The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here?”he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away. After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.

The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody making an attempt to move it. The king was in despair (绝望). “Is there no one in his village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm?”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”

I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

6 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Lucy was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team as well. But this particular competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.” “I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Lucy’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”

Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

An Encounter in a Department Store

Candle holders, picture frames and so on surrounded me in a household goods store. While my husband and I waited for construction to be finished in our new house, I enjoyed seeking decorating ideas. A figurine on one of the shelves attracted my attention, and I picked it up. It was beautiful, made of cast bronze. A woman was dancing with a young girl, their faces caught in a moment of pure joy, and the girl looked up lovely at what could only be her mother.

Memories flooded in I remembered my daughter, Laura, my son, Glenn, and me dancing around the living room. I was a nurse, which meant long shifts at the hospital, so I cherished these moments with my kids. “Having so fun,” as Laura used to say.

I could see both of my children now — Glenn dancing to the record player as Laura spun round and round. Time had passed in the blink of an eye. Now my husband and I were moving out of the house they’d grown up in. Laura has children of her own and works as a designer. Glenn also works in a design company.

I had to buy it, and knew just where I’d put it in the new house. It would be put on the side of the fireplace in the living room. Only one thing could make my purchase more perfect: if this figurine were part of a set, the other piece of a mother dancing with a boy. It was possible I’d find one.

Determined, I searched the entire store. I carefully scanned every shelf. There was no companion figurine anywhere, nor a salesperson to help me. Maybe the cashier will know, I thought. I headed to the registers. As I stood in the checkout line, I spotted an older woman walking quickly with something like a figurine in one of her hands.
