1 . Henry Ford was the first person to build cars which were cheap, strong and fast. He was able to sell millions of models because he could produce them in large numbers at a time: that is, he made a great many cars of exactly the same kind. Ford's father hoped that his son would become a farmer, but the young man did not like the idea and he went to Detroit(底特律)where he worked as a mechanic(机械师). By the age of 29, in 1892,he had built his first car. However, the car made in this way, the famous “Model T” did not appear until 1908-five years after Ford bad started his great motor car factory. 2 . Many people think that listening is a passive(被动的) business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as “bracketing”. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often, we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic. In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy, before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

1. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A.preparing a topic list firstB.focusing on one’s own mind
C.directing the talk to the desired resultsD.experiencing the speaker’s inside world
2. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A.How to listen well.B.What to listen to.
C.Benefits of listening.D.Problems in listening
3. According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.
A.listen activelyB.listen on purpose
C.set aside their prejudicesD.open up their inner mind
4. What type of writing the article likely to be?
A.Science fictionB.A news report.C.A medical report.D.Popular science

3 . From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a potential threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.

“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.

A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.

The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.

But the report states: “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.

“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.

A report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report's co-author.

“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.

1. We can infer from the text that in the future ________.
A.people will face many difficulties
B.people will take up more creative jobs
C.artificial intelligence will threaten people's lives
D.most jobs will be done in traditional workplaces
2. According to the report, ________.
A.people won't necessarily lose jobs
B.big companies will face fewer challenges
C.small companies will win against big companies
D.most people will become interested in technology
3. What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future?
A.Mixed.B.Worried.
C.Doubtful.D.Optimistic.
4. Jonathan Grudin's words in the last paragraph suggest that ________.
A.there will be enough jobs for people
B.things will change a lot in a few years
C.many people will become unemployed
D.technology will totally change future jobs

8 . 语法填空

At each stage of our life, we meet different kinds of people. Some are funny; some teach us lessons in life while others occupy a special space in our heart. The people     1     (call)“best friends” are just these special     2    (friend).

In our childhood, “best friends”might have meant the persons who are always by our side, whether it may be in the classroom or in the dining hall. However, as we are getting     3     (old) than before, our definition(定义)of “best friends” changes. In my opinion, best friends are those who love you     4     who you are and help you become who you should be. People in our life come and go, but some people stay. They are the people we should never lose.

True friends are those     5     will never leave you when you need them most. They are always there waiting for you and they love you when you forget to love     6     (you). The best feeling in the whole world is knowing that there is     7     person who always prays for us and always keeps us in his/her thought. Friendship may not     8     (necessary)be based on age, but it is based on     9     (understand). Even our parents also can be our best friends! So let us build our friendship and try our best     10     (see)the good side of everyone!

10 . Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.

Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programmes come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.

We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour —exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the earth with its antennae(天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit. So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.

Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the earth. A satellite usually works for about 10~12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.

1. Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage?
A.Sending information for weather forecast.
B.Taking photographs of the earth.
C.Sending TV pictures.
D.Providing food for airplane pilots.
2. What's the speed the earth rotates(旋转) at?
A.35,880 kilometers per hour.B.335,880 kilometers per hour.
C.11,000 kilometers per hour.D.110,000 kilometers per hour.
3. What does the underlined word “This” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.A satellite.B.A little rocket.
C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.
4. Which is TRUE of satellites?
A.A satellite usually works for about 10~12 years.
B.Every time a satellite gets broken, it is brought back to the earth to be repaired.
C.A broken satellite is never left in space.
D.They often crash into each other.
