3 . What Are the Roots of Your Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem is a person’s subjective assessment of his or her worth to himself or herself. Self-esteem covers various beliefs about oneself (such as “I’m a failure,” and “I’m beautiful”) as well as physiological states, including sadness, joy, and shame. The more we believe that we are worthy of happiness and good things in life, the more self-fulfilled we will be.When we don’t believe that we are worthy of these things, our ability to enjoy them can suffer.
Healthy self-esteem as an adult can be a gift that you are given in your childhood. It is a blessing that most people overlook. There are so many ways that adults with high self-esteem were supported as children that resulted in them having high self-esteem. For instance, they were praised for what they had achieved.
It is common that these adults also were made to feel that in order to be appreciated they needed to be perfect.
How you feel about yourself impacts how you live your life. People with high self-esteem tend to have better relationships than those with low self-esteem.
People with high self-esteem are better equipped at achieving their life goals because they have faith in themselves. They face failure too but they understand that failure or success doesn’t define them. Having high self-esteem allows you to accept yourself for who you are. Flaws and strengths, you know that these make up the essence of who you are.
Why you should work on your self-esteem
Since self-esteem is connected to how we perform in various areas of our lives, it is important to work on it. To build better relationships, careers, and health and achieve goals, you need to first understand that you are worthy of all those things.
That understanding comes from building high self-esteem. If you had a terrible childhood, it doesn’t mean you are doomed. You just have to work a little harder to build high self-esteem and it is possible. However, it isn’t easy.
There are many resources out there that can help you with simple exercises that you can do on a daily basis to achieve this. If you are struggling in many areas of your life, take a step back and evaluate the relationship you have with yourself.
How do you talk to yourself? How do you treat yourself? What do you think of yourself? Do you feel worthy of receiving good in your life or do you feel bad about the good things that happen to you? If you find yourself experiencing something good and you tell yourself “I don’t deserve this” or “I didn’t work hard enough for this,” you may have low self-esteem. And when you have that kind of negative self-talk, you self-sabotage.

B.When we start to doubt what’s important in life, we tend to do less of it. |

5 . There are many kinds of heroes. Even animals can be heroes. This month’s newsletter tells about three amazing animals. Each one is a hero!
Thumper the Dog
Thumper was a dog that lived with a family which had a three-year-old son named Benjamin. One day Benjamin wandered into a large field. The grass in the field was taller than he was, so he could not find his way out. Hundreds of people began to search for Benjamin. When they found him, they saw Thumper stayed with Benjamin and kept him warm. So Benjamin had stayed safe and calm.
Lulu the Pig
The Altsmans had a pet pig named Lulu. One summer the couple went camping and took Lulu with them. The husband went fishing one morning. The wife didn’t feel well, so she and Lulu stayed in the camper. Suddenly Mrs. Altsman fell to the floor. Lulu pushed the camper door open and climbed out to locate help. When a car came by, she lay down in front of it. When the driver got out, Lulu led him back to the camper. The man called for help and Mrs. Altsman was taken to hospital.
Sugar the Cat
Sugar was a beautiful cat. Three years ago she wandered onto the Woods’ farm in California and Mrs. Woods began feeding her. Mrs. Woods noticed something wrong with the cat’s left leg, but this didn’t make Sugar any less special. Mrs. Woods loved Sugar. Later the couple moved to a new farm in Oklahoma. They gave Sugar to a neighbor who would take good care of her, because they knew she wouldn’t like riding in cars for days. However, Sugar walked across deserts and mountains and traveled more than 1,500 miles to the Woods’ new farm! Mr. and Mrs. Woods could hardly believe their eyes. 6 . Susan Casado felt well prepared to have a birthday party of 15 to 20 guests for her son, Shemy, who celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday. But after none of the boy's friends arrived, she never expected she'd be hosting nearly 100 surprise guests at her home.
Susan tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she was disappointed when her brother was the only person to show up at the party at first. After seeing that she had tears in her eyes, however, Shemy's uncle connected with a local Facebook group to call for more people to join the celebration. Moments later, a woman arrived at Susan's home asking for the birthday boy, although the family had never met her before.
As people continued to arrive, the mother realized that her brother had something to do with it, and was then shown a Facebook post that he made to advertise the party.
After more unexpected guests continued to arrive, however, Susan began to worry about the amount of food that she had prepared. "I felt so embarrassed," she explains. But guests didn't care about the food and drinks. Instead, they told the birthday boy's mother that they were there to "make Shemy's day", which even got better once the guests of honor arrived from St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
"My first thought was, 'Is everybody okay? Is anybody hurt?' And then they said, 'We're coming here to say happy birthday to Shemy,'" Susan says. "They said, 'We brought you a big toy, we brought you a fire truck.'"
Susan went on to explain that although Shemy has Down syndrome and isn't able to say much, he does express his happiness with laughter and hugs. "He hugs when he feels happy, so when people came in to meet him, we took pictures together and he hugged them. This is the way that he says thank you."
When Susan asked her brother why he went through the extra effort to make sure that his nephew's party was amazing. She says that he told her, "He should have a good birthday." As for the firefighters, who attended, they told the family that it's all part of the job. One of the firefighters, Jeremy Robshaw, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that they just wanted to "bring a smile" to Shemy's face.

10 . Thousands of years ago, New Year’s Eve fell on October 31, and in some European countries, like Ireland, it was a special day for the sun god. To celebrate the coming of a new year and to scare ghosts away, people would get together and wear scary costumes (装束).
Most Europeans followed this old tradition even after they became Christians in 312 AD. As Christian practices became more and more important in most European cultures, Europeans began to see the importance in holding a special day for saints (圣人). Saints are Christians who have died but are still given special respect. Each saint is given a special day, so that Christians can celebrate the saint’s life every year.
In 609 AD, the number of saints had grown too large for each of them to have a special day on the calendar, so the church set a day, May 13, to celebrate every saint's life. It was called “All Saints’ Day”. In 835 AD, this day was moved to November 1. Later, October 31 was named “Halloween” in Ireland. This word means “the evening before the day for all saints”. It was about this time that people began going to church on both Halloween and All Saints' Day.
Today, most people don’t know much about All Saints’ Day or the history of Halloween. However, the old tradition of dressing up in scary costumes has been kept to this very day, which makes Halloween a fun evening for children.
