1 . Carla Brown discovered her interest in health and science communication as a teenager. One day when she was in her doctor’s office, she remembered looking at a poster on the wall, which listed directions for washing hands. She said to her mom, “When I’m older, I’m going to do things like that, but way better.” She has since gone in for a career to communicate health information in an unusual way—using gaming technology.
For her Ph.D. research, Brown looked into new antibiotics (抗生素) to treat diseases. Besides, she ran microbiology workshops to educate children about the right use of antibiotics. Through the workshops, she became interested in finding new ways to interest children in the learning process, so she came up with the idea of developing a card game they could play with one another. Named “Bacteria Combat”, the game asks players to light their competitors using cards standing for good and bad bacteria, as well as antibiotics. Some bacteria are not killed by antibiotic attacks, teaching game players about antibiotic resistance (抗性).
Brown, who was a good gamer when she was a child, gained funding to convert her card game into a mobile app. Then, upon finishing her Ph. D., she set up her own company called Came Doctor to develop computer games for education and health care organizations
In the company’s early years, Brown worked to develop Game Doctorin her spare time while she completed a project researching the effectiveness of science education games. She then worked for Public Health England for 1 year, designing teaching materials.
Last year, though, she decided to put her heart and soul fully in her company to see it grow well enough. It’s an experience that she has found challenging. but also fun- with similarities to the experience of playing an actual game. A report lasting almost three decades showed that transportation—flying, driving, rail, commercial shipping, etc.—is responsible for a larger share of domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (排放) than any other economic sector. Though passenger cars currently account for the largest portion of transportation-related GHG emissions, air travel is one of the fastest-growing polluters. Planes also leave behind those ice trails (痕迹)—called contrail clouds—which are even more polluting than the CO2 they produce. The word “contrails” is a mix of “condensation” and “trails”. They occur when waste gases mix with low-temperature, high-humidity (湿度) air. Contrails are harmful not just because they block sunlight, but also because they trap heat coming up from the ground, finally creating a warming effect below.
Today, alternative fuels that are similar in chemistry to traditional fossil jet fuel, but made from waste and raw materials instead, are becoming more commonplace. San Francisco International Airport has already started delivering sustainable aviation (航空) fuel through a pipeline; American, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines are some of the industry players that have committed to using it.
New research suggests that because contrail louds form only in very low temperatures, reducing the altitude of fights even slightly could dramatically minimize contrail climate forcing. One study found that just 2% of flights in Japan’s airspace were responsible for 80% of that space’s radiative forcing. The same study estimated that if even 1.7% of flights reduced their altitude by 2,000 feet—which is a normal amount of variation from the flight path anyway—the climate impact of contrails could be cut by 59%.

4 . It was 1954 when a young traveler named Robert Beach was hitching rides on his way from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles, California. His ride broke down on one cold night in Deming. Beach remembered being tired, hungry, and cold. With no money in his pocket, he wondered where he might spend the night. Police officers approached Beach who was standing downtown and he begged them to take him to prison just so he could be warm. The officers of course refused his request as he had not done anything wrong. Beach found a business doorway and settled in for the night.
When morning came, an Asian man walked out of the building and asked him how he might help and then handed him a bag of donuts, Beach recalled. Those were likely the best donuts he had ever tasted. Then reaching out to his family, he returned home immediately.
Now, sixty-seven years later, Beach got in touch with the Deming-Luna Chamber of Commerce and told his story about his brief sojourn in Deming to the new Executive Director Debbie Troyer Trover posted Beach’s story on the Chamber of Commerce and Community Facebook page where several people thought Beach might be referring to the Bowman’s Bakery on Pine Street. The community continued its search while the workers continued to look through old phone directories(电话簿). Finally, they decided they had come to a dead end.
After 50 years serving as a judge and entering retirement, Beach wanted to say thank-you to the community of Deming by sending a $1,000 check to a local homeless shelter. Margaret Fairman of Silver Linings Thrift Store and Camp Silver for the homeless rang up Beach and later the generous check he promised—a check representing the kindness of Deming—was delivered to Fairman in early February. “The Chamber would like to thank Judge Robert Beach for bringing Deming together in their search for the mysterious baker,” Troyer said. “We will let you think about the owner of this generous bakery from the past and perhaps this story will find some answers.”

5 . Whether you’re an early-bird or a night-owl, getting regular exercise is still generally a good idea at some point in your schedule. It turns out, however, that when you do your workout may affect your body differently. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the University of California, Irvine discovered these significant differences by placing nice on a treadmill (跑步机) at various times of day. Mice are animals active at night so then biological rhythm (生物节律) runs in the opposite direction from humans. Their morning starts when it gets dark and their night starts when it gets light. “There appear to be rather significant differences between the effect of exercise performed in the morning and evening, and these difference are probably controlled by the body’s biological clock,” says co-author Jonas Thue Treebak, an associate professor from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, in a release.
The authors found that when mice are on a morning exercise schedule, the cells in their muscles are able to process fat and sugar better. That being sad, they also noted that running on the treadmill in the evening causes mice to use more energy (burn more calories) for longer periods of time. “Morning exercise starts gene programs in the muscle cells, making them more effective and better able to metabolize (代谢) sugar and fat. Evening exercise, on the other hand, increases whole body energy consumption for an extended period of time,” says Treebak.
These findings are especially interesting to the research team because they seem to indicate the time of day when people with severe overweight or type-2 diabetes might be able to maximize the exercise gains. Still, these differing effects make it difficult for the researchers to determine when is better in general to exercise.
“At this point, we can only conclude that the effects of the two appear to differ, and we certainly have to do more work to determine the potential mechanisms (机制) for the beneficial effects of exercise training performed at these two time-points,” says Treebak.

Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.

7 . At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe.

9 . It’s 3 o’clock and you’ve been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn’t. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings area strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.
Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs bur x up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.
A craving is more complex. It activates (使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. So, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure.
In a 2017 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving”. So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me.
