文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章给出了当对生活中的任何事情都不抱希望时,可以做的一些事情的建议。

2 . You dream. You make goals. You work hard. You expect results. But, a lot of times those expectations are not met. You don’t achieve your goals. You may lose hope. Here are some things to do when you aren’t hopeful about anything in your life:

    1    .

Improve your skill sets or learn new ones. Spend your time in forming productive habits, which make you stick to a schedule and teach you persistence (执着). And this sort of determination helps you to move ahead in your life although you might face many difficulties in your way.

Don’t try to control everything.

One of the reasons why we become hopeless is that we see things not going our way. A lot of things influence your life and you can’t control everything.     2    . Worrying about things you can’t control isn’t going to help. Focus on what you can control or improve and forget about the rest.

Avoid coming to a conclusion too soon.

We are sometimes too quick to judge a situation before it even unfolds (展现) completely. Wait before forming an opinion about a certain situation. Because we always overthink things and worry unnecessarily. And the thing isn’t as bad as our mind makes it be.     3    .

Completely think through your situation.

When you’re upset about a certain situation not going your way, take out a pen and paper.     4    . Writing your thoughts down will give you a clear idea. Besides, it will give you the time to rethink and make a correct decision.

Allow yourself to open up to endless possibilities.

5    . When you believe that a good thing is coming your way, you prepare yourself for it and work accordingly. It pushes you in the direction of more hard work.

A.Let it go
B.Raise your own abilities
C.If you have made up your mind, stick to it
D.Then list the things you can and can’t control
E.Hope is an amazing feeling that lifts your life
F.The desire to control every situation only makes you tired
G.You just need to take a step back and reflect on your thoughts

3 . Learning to say “yes, and”

When I first heard about the improvisation (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect chance to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help.

During our first class, we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos (犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say “yes” and then continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong.

The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment. Once when I was giving a presentation about my science, an audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused and nervous, I took the “yes, and” approach—accepting the question and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer. I got pretty excited about it.

The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected.

I think all scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth finding out whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support, a preconceived story, but to say “yes, and.”

1. Why did the author attend the improvisation class?
A.To get a different experience.
B.To finish her Ph.D. at university.
C.To give up her job as a science communicator.
D.To improve her speaking and communicating ability.

A.She formed her own idea quickly.
B.She came up with lots of creative responses.
C.She paid more attention to the logic of answers.
D.She became a good listener before giving an opinion.
3. The author mentions applying the “yes, and” approach to her scientific experiments to ________.
A.explain the process of using the method
B.prove the benefits of the improvisation class
C.share her own research experiences with readers
D.attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class
4. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph?
A.They should attend the improvisation class.
B.They should question all preconceived ideas.
C.They should carry on research by admitting earlier data.
D.They should try to improve their academic knowledge.

4 . A crew(全体成员)of six teenage girls completed a nine-day sailing trip in the US recently, after having seasickness and strong winds.

For the past three years, the Sea Cadet teenagers who set sail were all male. Roger Noakes, who captained(担任队长)the boat, said this was the first time he’d taken out an all-female crew.

The girls asked for an all-girls trip in August this year. The crew set sail along with three adults, Noakes and two Sea Cadet representatives. The original plan was for the girls to sail 24 hours a day in rotating shifts(轮流换班)along the coast and then return. Things turned out differently, however. “The first night was difficult because the wind was really hard. The waves were going up and down,” said Abby Fairchild,16. “Everybody got seasick.” Noakes gave the girls the choice of just sailing in the bay and not going into open water. “But they decided they were going.”

The teenagers then sailed a long way overnight and slept in shifts. “We’ve learned everything from controlling the boat to putting up the sails while we have rough seas,” said 15-year-old Olivia Wilcox.

The teenagers stopped on land in Massachusetts. They didn’t make it to their original destination(目的地) in Maine, where they were supposed to have a celebratory dinner, due to the weather and winds. They said they weren’t disappointed, however, as they’d learned a lot. “They learned about boating, and above all, they built confidence and character,” said Noakes.

1. What was special about the Sea Cadet trip this year?
A.It was the longest sailing trip ever.
B.It was the first all-female-crew sailing trip.
C.It was the most dangerous sailing trip ever.
D.It was the first sailing trip for teenagers.
2. What happened on the crew’s first day of the trip?
A.They all felt sick on the boat.
B.Some of them were hurt.
C.Their boat was out of control.
D.They went into open water by mistake.
3. Which of the following best describes these young sailors?
A.Strong-minded and having a strong sense of teamwork.
B.Hard-working and having great leadership skills.
C.Understanding and creative.
D.Adventurous and skillful.
4. According to Noakes, what was the sailors’ greatest benefit from the trip?

7 . Sonja Redding and her family were on their way home to Omaha, Nebraska, after a weeklong visit to Washington, D. C. with her two sons, one of whom, 5-year-old Xayvior, has autism(自闭症).

Although all of the other flights had gone fine, Xayvior became angry during one of the flights, and Redding couldn’t calm him.

“It felt like everyone on the plane was looking at us and got angry with my son, ” she wrote in a Facebook post after she got home. “I don’t know what to do when others just don’t understand that he is not just a kid with no discipline(自制力),but a child with special needs who doesn’t know how to control himself.”

The day was saved by Delta flight attendant(空乘人员)Amanda Amburgy. She tried to help Xayvior watch a movie, but when that failed, she offered to take him on a tour of the airplane. That worked, and soon the child was not only calm, but having a good time.

“When they came back, Xayvior was much calmer and happier,” wrote Redding in the post, which now has 2,700 likes and over 500 shares. “I want to thank this Delta attendant. She didn’t judge, and she just showed love. We need more people like this in the world. ”

It wasn’t long before Amburgy was told about the post.“ We’re there to help, and that’s what we want to do,” she said in an interview. “So, we always want to make anything easier for the family as well as other passengers.”

9 . ByteDance(字节跳动)Group’s TikTok, an overseas version of Chinese short video sharing app Douyin, faces an existential crisis in the United States, as murmurs of a “crackdown”(强制取缔)from the White House forced the Chinese company to engage in talks on selling its US business to Microsoft.

TikTok is the fastest-growing registered global mobile internet app, with more than 100 million users, and its rapid growth, especially in the US, is seen as a threat to Facebook. The US government has long viewed globally competitive Chinese high-tech companies including Huawei as a threat and done whatever it could to crack down on(打击)them in the name of “national security”.

The US government has not introduced any specific policy against TikTok, only threatened it through a number of unclear statements.

According to the latest media reports, Microsoft is prepared to press ahead with the negotiations to take over TikTok’s US operations and complete the negotiations by Sept 15, following talks between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and US President Donald Trump.

This means that TikTok will have to hand its fate over to some unpredictable power, and even have to sell its assets without the option of setting a price.

The US government has failed to find a reasonable legal excuse to deal with TikTok. All private data of TikTok’s US users are stored in the US and are unlikely to be transferred. Considering the US government is trying to deal with TikTok in a political way, TikTok should consider incorporating(合并)the dispute into the US legal process to assert(坚持)its legal rights and interests.

TiKTok’s core value lies in its unique algorithms, a product of artificial intelligence that represents the expertise of Chinese engineers and programmers with high-value intellectual property.

The US government’s move, which has forced ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US company, is similar to a forced technology transfer and an example of the US’ open seizure of Chinese intellectual property.

If ByteDance sells TikTok to a US company for “security reasons", that would set a dangerous precedent, motivating other countries where TikTok operates to follow the US administration's example and cause a chain reaction.

ByteDance is a young Chinese private company that cannot deal with a political game played by the US. But as a Chinese company that has gone global, ByteDance has reasons to take up legal means to defend its legal rights. The Chinese government can also consider examining whether the technology transfer in the deal violates China’s law and harms the country’s national interests.

1. What is the most valuable as for TikTok?
A.Its global popularity.
B.Its artificial intelligence.
C.Its registered global mobile internet app.
D.Its private data of TikTok’s worldwide users.
2. Why does the American government force the Chinese company to hand over TikTok’s US operations to a US company?
A.Out of so-called political reasons.B.Out of so-called debt reasons.
C.Out of so-called technical reasons.D.Out of so-called security reasons.
3. What does the underlined word “seizure”probably mean in Para. 8?
A.An untrue spoken statement about someone.
B.The use of legal authority to take sth from sb.
C.The crime of stealing sth from a person or place.
D.The act of trying to hurt somebody using physical violence.
4. What can be the best title for the news report?
A.TikTok must defend its rights legally
B.TikTok is seen as a threat to Facebook
C.ByteDance has to sell TikTok to a US company
D.ByteDance agrees to transfer technology
