文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述一些如何避免批评别人的方法。

3 . Criticism is harmful to healthy relationships.     1     First, work on changing your own behavior. Then, find effective ways to communicate if someone bothers you.

Changing Your Behavior

●Think before you speak.     2     Sometimes, it’s best to let small indiscretions (轻率的行为) go. Try taking a few deep breaths and leaving the room instead of criticizing.

●Separate the individual from their actions. If you work on separating the person from the action, you may naturally want to criticize less. As you realize you cannot judge a person’s character based on a single choice or decision, you will be unable to call someone out for being rude or disrespectful.

●Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from how you’re choosing to see a situation. Everyone has shortcomings. However, the vast majority of people have good qualities that outweigh bad ones.     3

Communicating More Effectively

4     Some people have issues that may need addressing. However, feedback is very different from criticism. When addressing an issue, focus on suggestions you can make to help another person improve, which is more effective than criticizing.

●Ask for what you want directly. Inefficient communication often results in heavy criticism.     5     Make sure to ask for what you want in a direct, respectful manner. This will eliminate (消除) the need for criticism.

●Consider the other party’s perspective. If you criticize others too often, you may be shutting out the other person’s point of view. Try to step in another person’s shoes before criticizing and you may get some new and special ideas.

A.Give feedback rather than criticism.
B.However, there are ways to avoid criticism.
C.Try to focus on a person’s positive qualities over their negative ones.
D.If you find yourself making assumptions about a person’s character, stop yourself.
E.If you’re not telling someone what you want, that person cannot be expected to know.
F.Criticism should, ideally, be working towards an effective solution to a negative situation.
G.When you want to dish out criticism, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything.

4 . Looking at his pile of unpaid bills always makes Giuseppe Del Giudice feel uneasy. More often than not, Del Giudice leaves almost everything until the last moment. He is not alone. “It’s part of the human condition,” said procrastination (拖延症) researcher Tim Pychyl, a psychology professor at Carleton University. “We want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task.”

One big factor for avoidance is fear of failure, of not living up to expectations. Kelli Saginak, a 57-year-old functional health coach from Wisconsin, procrastinated about looking for a new job for years. “If I don’t take the risk, decide, or commit, I don’t have to face the judgment.” said Saginak. That inability to take action only confirmed her that she would never do any better. Procrastinators believe that they are more effective under pressure. But researchers have different opinions. “I once did an experiment, putting procrastinators under restrictions of time,” said Tim Pychyl. “They made more errors. They took longer than nonprocrastinators, but they thought they did better.”

Whatever the motivation, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. Delaying a diet or exercise program may increase your risk of heart disease. Procrastinators experience higher levels of stress, both from leaving things to the last minute and from their own regrets about their procrastination. There’s one bit of good news: People tend to procrastinate less as they age. “As you grow older, the idea of living forever does fade away,” Tim Pychyl said. “It becomes clearer: How many summers do we have left? Ten? Fifteen? They’re really limited. What are you going to do with each of those summers?”

1. How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By raising questions.B.By giving an example.
C.By making a definition.D.By making comparisons.
2. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A.Kelli Saginal tends to take risks.
B.Procrastinators did better in the experiment.
C.Kelli Saginal has been looking for a new job.
D.Procrastinators are less effective under pressure.
3. Why do people tend to procrastinate less when getting older?
A.They are aware of the limited time.
B.They experience lower level of stress.
C.They regret what they have done before.
D.They seldom leave things to the last minutes.
4. Where is the text probably from?
A.A fiction.B.A book review.
C.A guidebook.D.A science magazine.

7 . To help you be persistent (坚持不懈的) in the face of "noes" in the job interview, I'd like to share a few rules that I've learned.

1    .It's just an interview. Pull emotion out of "noes" and don't allow yourself to feel rejected because someone only rejects your application. A "no" does not mean that you weren't qualified for a job. As I mentioned earlier, it might have been a case of bad timing.

Don't shy away from being persistent. Persistence in the face of challenges, failures and unexpected situations is the mark of a good employee-and future employers notice that.    2    .

Be respectful. You won't get anywhere if you respond to a "no" with a hurt or bitter response.    3    .Don't burn bridges. And don't be rude and contact employers or people in charge every five minutes. This advice is especially important now because there will likely be even more "noes" during this period, as well as a delayed timeline on responses. In times of crisis, you should wait even longer to follow up with prospective employers. Even so, you should be even more respectful in your responses.    4    , let the other party know that you are still interested in working with them in the future.

I will continue to receive "noes" throughout my life, as will you.    5    . I've built up my resistance to "noes" by being persistent—and for me, that's been an important element of my career advancement and professional development.

A.Honor employers
B.But I'm not afraid of them
C.Don't take rejection personally
D.Even if the final response is "no"
E.Whenever I get a "no", I will get impatient
F.In casę you make the wrong choice in the job interview
G.There's nothing wrong with sending them a follow-up email

10 . When you hear the beginning of your favorite song from the radio, suddenly your neck is covered in goose bumps.

It's such a thing that a group of scientists call “skin excitement”—a feeling of cold caused not by a drop in temperature or sudden scare, but by the sense of beauty. “Skin excitement” can come from a song, a painting, a moving movie scene, or even a beloved memory-pretty much anything that causes the giving out of pleasure-soaked dopamine in your brain. But it does not come for all of us.

Your favorite music uncovers a lot about your personality, and so does how you respond to that music. Studies suppose that as few as 55 percent of people experience “skin excitement” when listening to music. And if you count yourself among this group, the goose bumps on your skin aren't the only giveaway—scientists can read it in your brain, too. In a new study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, Harvard researchers performed brain scans on 10 students who said they reliably got cold when listening to music, and 10 students who didn't. They found that the cold-prone brains may really be excited by stronger emotions.

Cold-prone brains are generally more likely to show stronger emotional intelligence than no-cold brains. Cold-prone minds tend to have unusual active imagination, reflect more deeply on their emotions, and appreciate nature and the beauty of music and art to a stronger degree than no-cold brains.

So, what type of music causes the chills? It seems that the type is not so important; participants in the new study reported getting cold from songs of every kind. And any song connected with a strong emotional memory of the listener can produce the most reliable results. For me, that's the song Sailing to Philadelphia by Mark Knopfler, which I listened to as a kid in the car with my dad, on the way to the summer camp.

1. What can we learn about “skin excitement” in the text?
A.It helps to produce doparmine.B.It is caused by the pain in the skin.
C.It can be experienced by every music listener.D.It is the human body's reaction to something nice.
2. What does the new study by Harvard researchers mainly find?
A.The percentage of music lovers in students.
B.The solutions to the goose bumps on one's skin.
C.The differences between cold-prone and no-cold brains.
D.The relationship between one's music preference and personality.
3. What are people with cold-prone brains like?
A.Beautiful and intelligent.B.Emotional and dishonest.
C.Imaginative and sensitive.D.Brave and strong-minded.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Responses to Music Vary among PeopleB.A Feeling of Cold Is Caused by Horrible Music
C.Your Favorite Music Reveals Your PersonalityD.Favorite Music May Bring Forth Goose Bumps
