1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mr. Ward couldn’t stand students cheating the most. Whenever there was an exam, he watched very closely, making sure no act of cheating was neglected, and any student who cheated would be seriously punished.

I remember many times after tests, Mr. Ward found that the students sitting around me had better scores than the others and the further away a student was from me, the worse his grade. Mr. Ward suspected that some of the juniors “accidentally” got some of my answers. So he and I had a very interesting talk about cheating.

Mr. Ward once told me of some of the ways students tried to cheat. Student A intentionally “dropped” his pencil an unusually far distance from his desk. Then he stood up and walked slowly across the room to take it back. On the way, he glanced at the papers. Student B got a piece of paper and wrote down all the formulas (公式) on a tiny bit of paper taped to the inside of the kid’s palm. These incidents weren’t very rare.

The last day of the entire school year, all I had left was my math exam and there seemed to be some definite tension in the air because this was the biggest test of the year. I saw some kids trying to do some last minute studying, some trying to calm themselves down by breathing slowly and some saying a silent prayer.

Mr. Ward went to the front and started handing out the tests by rows. After explaining the rules of the test, he said very clearly, “If you cheat, I will take your test and tear it up. You will get a 0 for the biggest grade of the year.” Mr. Ward moved very effortlessly and efficiently about the room and during every test he went into a sort of RADAR mode. He sat at the front and watched the room for anything that might look like cheating. During this RADAR mode, if you were cheating, you would be caught. Guaranteed.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I first met Bo when I volunteered to be a docent(讲解员) at the zoo. It was a summer program our school participated in, where biology students earned extra credit by teaching little kids about some of the animals. I needed to increase my biology grade, so I asked my friend Sue Wang to be my partner. “Melanie, I’ll do this with you,” she said, “but I’ll do the talking. No way will I handle the animals!” That was OK with me.

During the training course, our instructor, Mr. Lindsey came to Sue and me and said, “OK, girls, your animal is a boa(蟒蛇).” I felt myself go cold. “I have to handle a boa?”

That night, I had a nightmare. I was carrying the snake around a classroom, showing the kids, when all of a sudden it started constricting(收紧). It squeezed and squeezed, and I couldn’t breathe! I woke up in a sweat, my body rigid.

Next day I told my instructor. “Sure you can do it,” he said. He slid the door of the snake carrier open. “Now put your elbow in—slowly —and wait for him to crawl on your arm. Good, that’s the way.” He wasn’t wet or slimy. He was dry and soft! But it was scary! Mr. Lindsey stood beside me. “Relax, Melanie. You need to show him you aren’t afraid. He needs to trust you, and you need to trust him.” Yeah, right. He didn’t do anything. Awesome! I named him Bo. After a few school visits, I began to really like my boa and was pretty much at ease with him.

Then came the day I will never forget. As usual, I opened the carrier and took him out.   After Sue talked about how boas live mostly in rain forests in Central and South America, I walked around the classroom, saying, “Don’t be afraid. See, he is nice. You can touch him gently, here, on his back. His name is Bo.”

Most of the kids actually did touch him, and everything went fine until one boy, for some unknown reasons, tapped Bo on the head. I froze.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the animal shelter, Sarah walked through the rows of cages until her eyes landed on a small, trembling dog huddled (蜷缩) in the corner. “I think I’ve found the one, ” Sarah whispered softly to herself as she looked into the dog’s sad eyes. This timid, abandoned dog had no idea that a journey of transformation with friendly people lay in store for him.

The shelter staff explained that the dog, named Buddy, had a difficult past and was very shy and scared. Sarah extended a hand, offering a soothing tone, “Hey sweetie, you must have a story to tell, but from now on, you’ve got a buddy in me. ”

Bringing Buddy home was just the beginning of their journey, which was rocky at first for him. Everything was strange and new, causing him to hide under furniture and startle at every sound. Therefore, Sarah provided a cozy bed, delicious meals, and most importantly, heaps of love and comfort.

Slowly but surely, he started to emerge from his shell, wagging his tail tentatively and gazing at Sarah with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Under Sarah’s patient and loving guidance, Buddy flourished, even learning tricks and commands, and forming a deep bond with his new owner.

The journey of healing turned out to be a success. But Sarah had never expected it would bring about another one.

One day, while scrolling through social media, Sarah came across a heartwarming story about dogs being trained to assist children with autism (自闭症). Those children had social communication difficulties and had few facial expressions and gestures. Without hesitation, she inquired about the program and soon, Buddy was enrolled in training to become a certified therapy(治疗) dog. But she was unsure whether Buddy would be comfortable with the new challenge.

Tom could communicate well with other people through the computer or even on the phone, but when it came to making public presentations, he was hopeless. He was aware that people at conferences would count up the times he said such things as “what I really meant to say was” when he got nervous.

Tom was an expert in Reality Robotics Company. His boss had asked him to do something that he was absolutely scared about. The next month he would be presenting on behalf of his company, and there would be a lot of people, and his boss, who had never attended Tom’s presentations, wanted to impress the audience with the innovative work that the company was doing. Tom knew his boss’s respect for him would plummet (坠落) if he said that he could not do it. So, he worked like crazy on the task.

One day, he felt a great need to relax. He turned on the TV. He laughed, and smiled through the first show, making him feel a little better. But it was the second show that really got to him, where the ventriloquist (腹语术者) Arthur worked with his dummy (假人) . This really provided him with an inspiration for how he was going to make his much-feared presentation a success.

The next day, he organized a meeting of the people that had the skills he needed, and, of course, his boss. When he explained what he wanted to do, he could sense that everyone was with him on this plan. But a lot of work had to be done for the object of the plan to be completed.

It was the day of the presentation. Tom was somewhat nervous, but nowhere near to the extent that he usually was for just such a situation. And they had to get to their destination early, for what needed to be done had to be completed before the audience knew what was going on.

It was almost nine o’clock and Sydney returned to Tellson’s Bank to see Mr. Lorry. Monsieur Manette, however, hadn’t returned from his visits. Mr. Lorry was worried. When he did return, his face told them that he had failed to find someone to save Charles. “Where are my bench and my work tools?” he asked. “I must finish those shoes!”

Their heart sank. “The last hope is gone!” said Mr. Lorry shaking his head sadly. “Yes, the last hope is gone,” said Sydney. Then he took a piece of paper from his pocket. It was his Leave Pass, with “Sydney Carton” on it. He gave it to Mr. Lorry, and asked him to keep it for him until the next day because he didn’t want to take it into the prison when visiting Charles. Then he looked in Monsieur Manette’s pockets and found his Leave Pass with his name and the names of Lucie and little Lucie on it.

“Look after these, too,” he said. “They are in great danger. Madame Defarge is going to have them all arrested, probably the day after tomorrow. You must have your horses and carriage ready at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Lucie and her father must be sitting in the carriage, and so must you. As soon as I arrive, take me into the carriage and drive off. This is very, very important. We must save them!”

On the next day afternoon, Charles Darnay sat alone in his cell, writing a long letter to Lucie and others to her father and Mr. Lorry. Then he lay down to sleep. He woke early, so he got up and walked up and down in his cell. The guard had told him that he would die at three o’clock. Just after the clock had struck one o’clock, Charles heard footsteps approaching. Then the key turned in the lock, and the door opened. He heard the guard Barsad say, “Go in quickly, and do what you have to do. I will wait here.” The person who entered the room with some hidden chemicals was Sydney Carton, who smiled and put a finger on his lips. Was this really happening?

Sam, Wayne, Tim and Will were classmates. They loved music and formed a band in their high school. Although after graduation they met each other less and less, their friendship remained deep.

Now, when they were in their 60s, they decided to gather in a park to give a performance in memory of their good days. That day, when Sam, Wayne and Tim arrived there, they received a message from Jenny, Will’s wife. Once reading it, they hurriedly drove to Will’s house, where they found Will was sleeping after taking medicine. The tall and handsome man was weak and thin, which moved them to tears. And that day, they found out the whole story of Will’s illness from Jenny.

“Will’s heart condition has been worsening for a long time,” Jenny said. “Doctors said without an operation he would die six months later. But the operation costs $20,000. Now, after all the treatments, we don’t have that kind of money anymore.” Sam, Wayne and Tim comforted her and immediately made a plan to help Will.

The next day, they gathered early in a park, two blocks away from their high school, and put up a poster: “Playing for Will”. Then, they stood there for hours, playing song after song. Moved, many passers-by listened and left coins and bills.

But by the third day, the three men found it hard for them to support long time of performing. “Alright,” Sam said, “we’ll do several more days of this. Then we should rethink our plan.”

Just then, a little girl pointed at the poster of Will and said excitedly, “That’s Mr Schumer!” Surprised Sam asked how she knew him. “He was the best music teacher we had in school! He once taught us rock music and even helped us build a band!” the girl smiled. And she continued, “Are you his friends? When did he begin being sick? And did he get better from his sickness?” When the nine-year-old girl, Harriet, learned about her favorite teacher’s condition and his three old friends’ idea of performing on the street, she was lost in thought and wanted to do something.

After saying goodbye to Sam, Wayne and Tim, Harriet returned to school.

In high school, I was a straight-A student, a member of many school clubs, and a receiver of many rewards. However, I had been subjected to peer pressure. Wanting to be “Cool”, I started going to parties and drinking, drunk beyond recognition. My life took a turn for the worse. However, the experience in one summer program taught me a lesson: never do something you believe is wrong just to gain the approval of others.

In June, I worked part-time at a restaurant. The day before I left for the program, one co-worker offered me his driver’s license, telling me to have fun in Quebec since we two almost looked the same. I’d seen friends walk into liquor (酒) stores with fake licenses and come out carrying a twelve-pack of beer, smiling proudly. So I took the license, but I promised myself that I wouldn’t use it. However, I easily got carried away.

On the first night of the program, while walking around, my new friends and I came across a liquor store. Kai asked if anyone had a fake license. After everyone shook his head, I cleared my throat and declared, “I do.” With everyone’s admiration and Kai’s twenty dollars and instruction, I boldly agreed to take on the task without thinking. I managed to buy a case of beer. The boys cheered and gave me pats on the back. “You’re the man,” someone said to me. The praise boosted my self-confidence.

The last night there was a party. A few of my friends insisted that we drink before the dance. They asked me, the “ID man,” to buy alcohol. To earn their admiration, I took the cash and bought what they wanted. Later that night, I was enjoying myself when Kai said nervously, “Cristian isn’t okay.” Worried for my friend, I went to assess the situation. Clearly, Cristian was overly drunk and almost unconscious.

We ate a big breakfast at a local restaurant, like we did every Father’s Day. The present my daughter gave me was a T-shirt with the words “World’s Coolest Dad”. I put it on, feeling that was what made Father’s Day so great.

Just then my volunteer fire-department pager (呼机) went off: “Attention, Pocahontas-Old Ripley firefighters! House fire on Simpson Street. Repeat. House fire on Simpson Street.”

“Gotta go,” I said. I ran to my car and took off. I got to the firehouse in minutes. Another firefighter, Tom Smith, and the chief were waiting. “Don, Tommy, take truck 253. Roll!” he ordered. “The rest of the guys will be right behind you.” As the first on the scene, our job was to make sure everyone was out of the house, locate the nearest hydrant (消防栓), and then wait for backup.

A small crowd had gathered in front of number 907 when we got there. They watched the fire in panic. Thick black smoke could be seen pouring from the one-story house’s open front door. A large man burst through the door, red eyes streaming with tears. “Please hurry!” he called. “My boy’s still in there. I couldn’t get to him!”

There was no time to wait for backup. I left Tommy outside and rushed into the house.

“Anyone here?” I shouted. No answer. I searched every inch of the first two rooms. No child. The fire had grown so fierce by then. It seemed that the roof would collapse at any time. All at once a vision was put into my head—that father begging us to save his child. I mustn’t give up. Not today, I thought. There still might be a chance.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

She pulled back on the ropes, making the homemade swing (秋千) fly higher and closer to the leafy branches of the tall tree. The wind blew cool against her cheeks. She was five years old, and, at that moment, being mad at her eleven-year-old brother, David.

“How could he have been so mean?” she asked herself, remembering how he had made a face and called her a “big baby” at the breakfast table. “He hates me,” she thought, “just because I took the last cake out from under his nose. He hates me!”

The swing carried her up so high that she could see for miles. It was fun looking down at the farmyard below. Her red sweater flashed brightly in the morning sunlight. She stopped thinking about being mad at her brother and started to sing a swinging song.

On a distant hill behind the swing, a huge bull (公牛) with long, sharp horns (角) and big, heavy hooves (牛蹄) watched the red sweater flashing in the sunlight. The bull had broken out of his grassland. He was in a bad mood and ready to rush at anything that moved. Then he lowered his massive head and began moving across the field toward the red sweater he saw swinging back and forth beneath the tall tree.

Meanwhile, David was in the barnyard (仓院), feeding the chickens. He looked out and saw his little sister on the swing. “Sisters are a pain in the neck,” he thought. Then suddenly he saw the bull rushing across the field, heading straight for his sister. Without a second thought, David screamed as loudly as he could, “Look out behind you! Get out of there! Run!”
