3 . It may be the holiday season, but the spirit of peace and goodwill has not infected the streets of Los Angeles. More drivers seem to be rolling through stop signs and running red lights than ever before. Everyone seems to be in a terrible hurry.

Why is everyone in such a hurry? Where are they rushing to?

I think perhaps the answer lies in answering this question: What does that round of parties and meetings and mad rushing from place to place allow all of us to avoid confronting? I think the answer is clear---ourselves.

There is an experiment where subjects had to choose between being alone with themselves and their thoughts for approximately 15 minutes and receiving electric shocks. The majority chose the shocks-- reflection of how painful, frightening, threatening, confusing, boring (!), you name it...we find being alone with just ourselves and our thoughts.

Our desire not to be with our innermost thoughts is so great that we create and find distractions. In the car, we can make phone calls or listen to music. We live in a world of endless opportunities for distraction.

I understand the desire. Life is hard. Growing is a painful slow process. To keep moving requires determination and strength--- and giving up seems So much easier (as do those electric shocks!). We may win some battles, but the war is never over. Sometimes we are just too tired to fight and just need that music or that book to relax. I just instinctively turn on the radio when I get in the car, I don’t even give the quiet a moment to sink in.

But it’s time for a reality check; otherwise, we slip into an avoidance mode. It’s challenging. But let’ s take a change. Instead of rushing from house to car to meeting to groceries to...let’s take a moment to stop and think before each activity. What do I want to achieve now? And what is the best way to do that? Maybe I could think of ways to grow.

1. Why does the author mention drivers on the streets of Los Angeles?
A.To describe a strong holiday atmosphere.
B.To prevent a unique social phenomenon of America.
C.To raise his question on why people are in a terrible hurry.
D.To show that it’ S time to improve road safety in America.
2. What does the underlined word “confronting” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.FacingB.PassingC.Winning outD.Keeping off
3. What does the author think of the people who chose the shocks in the experiment?
A.They should be more courageous.
B.Their attitude to life was unexpected.
C.Their behavior was understandable.
D.They should refuse to take part in the experiment.
4. What can be learned about the author?
A.He has realized the importance of saving time.
B.He often reviews the mistakes he has made.
C.He will spend more time thinking.
D.He thinks life is full of surprises.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是研究发现如果一个人在睡觉的时候梦到了一个任务,就能把这项任务做得更好,并分析了其中的原因。

4 . Researchers at the Harvard Medical School have been looking at how sleeping and dreaming affect the way we perform certain tasks. Previous research has already shown that a person who has a nap (小睡) after learning a task will be able to complete the task better when they wake up than a person who doesn’t sleep. Now it has been revealed that if the person dreams about the task while they are asleep then they will be able to perform it even better.

For instance, if a student stays up all night to revise for an exam then he or she won’t do as well as a student who combines their study with sleep. But the student who will do best in the exam is the one who sleeps and dreams providing the dreams are related to what he or she is learning.

The time we are asleep is divided into different periods. These periods are known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During REM periods our dreams are more vivid and intense and easier to remember when we wake up. Brain activity is also higher.

According to Associate Professor Robert Stickgold, a memory and dream researcher at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, there’s convincing evidence that when we dream, the brain is making connections that help us learn what we have been learning previously.

It’s possible that in the future some courses will include short sleeping periods as part of the learning process. The power nap is now an established practice in the professional world even if it’s frowned upon in some cultures. It’s only a matter of time before a short sleep is common while studying. And if our dreams can be controlled to relate in some way to what we are learning then our learning potential will increase even more.

We know that we can’t live without sleep. But the reasons why we sleep and why we dream while we’re asleep are still a mystery.

1. What has the new research found?
A.Our dreams remain active during sleep.
B.Dreams help increase our learning potential.
C.We tend to dream after a long period of study. ;
D.Sleep is necessary for keeping our brains healthy.
2. How does the author explain the finding of the new research?
A.By using statistics.
B.By giving examples.
C.By analyzing causes,
D.By describing a process.
3. What is the difference between REM sleep and NREM sleep?
A.Our brains are more active during NREM sleep.
B.We are more likely to wake up during REM sleep.
C.Dreams during NREM sleep are more likely to disappear from memory,
D.Dreams during REM periods influence sleep quality much more heavily,
4. What might Robert Stickgold agree with?
A.The more we sleep, the more we dream.
B.Short sleeps should be encouraged in class.
C.We dream because our brain is making connections.
D.The benefits of the power nap lack scientific evidence.

On February 21, 2018, the news brought Christine Cheers to her knees: “There’s been an accident.”

Her son, 32-year-old Navy flight surgeon James Mazzuchelli, had been injured in a helicopter training mission.

Machines were keeping James alive when Christine arrived at the hospital. The doctors told Christine that what she was seeing was likely his future——that her scuba diving, world-traveling, overachiever of a son was never going to wake up. He would never breathe on his own. He would never smile at her again.

It was time for Christine to honor the spirit of a man who had switched his major from commerce engineering to premed (医学预科) because he wanted to help people. It was time to make her very worst day some stranger’s best one. Christine instructed the hospital to begin the organ donation process.

Mike Cohen was just 18 when he’d been diagnosed (诊断) with a serious cancer in 2004. Doctors warned him that the treatment could cause lasting damage to his heart. At the time, surviving cancer seemed like the more pressing concern. He took his treatment seriously, doing the radiation and chemo(化疗). The risk had paid off — two years after his diagnosis, he was cancer-free. But six years later, his heart was beginning to fail. He would need a new one. He had to hope he survived waiting for a new heart.

Fortunately, on February 24, the hospital said they’d found him a heart. The next morning, Mike woke up in a hospital bed with a new heart beating in his chest.

After two weeks, he was sent home with instructions to report to recovery center, where he was limited for the first few days to slow walking. Across the room he spied a stationary (固定的) bike. And two weeks later, with his doctor’s OK, he threw a leg over and began to ride the bike.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了埃及年轻人婚姻方面的一些细节以及传统的婚姻习俗正受到的挑战。

9 . Marriages in Egypt are somewhat different from those in the West. They will discourage dating if single men and women aren’t related. Among the middle and upper classes, the man and woman know each other from schools or universities, where young people gather in groups like in the West.     1     Sometimes families negotiate a marriage for an unmarried son or daughter.

However, the steps toward marriage are the same as those in the West.     2     The discussion usually covers such topics as the dowry (嫁妆) and wedding expense, etc. The two families then arrange a meeting between the potential bride and groom.     3

The wedding usually takes place quickly, unless the groom-to-be is going abroad to work or study, in which case the marriage may be postponed. The marriage may be very simple, consisting only of the mosque priest (清真寺牧师) to declare the marriage contract between the groom and the bride’s father, who speaks on behalf of his daughter.

4     According to Egyptian law, both men and women have the right to ask for a divorce. Upon divorce the father is granted custody (监护人) of any children. Any dowry paid by the groom to the bride’s family must be returned.

Egypt is trying to bridge the difference between traditional interpretations (方式) and modern models. At one time, Egypt gave women the right to ask for a divorce only in certain circumstances, such as her husband’s being mentally ill.     5     Now in Egypt and other countries, traditional interpretations are being challenged.

A.Either one can say no to the marriage.
B.Weddings are a time of celebration as in the West.
C.The two families need to discuss the terms of the marriage.
D.Since revolution, women have entered the work place in force.
E.Divorce is not very common in Egypt, although it does still happen.
F.In the lower classes, the chance for socializing with the opposite sex is rarer.
G.A woman’s right to ask for a divorce in any case was put into law in Egypt in 1999.

文章大意:本文是一篇科普说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现——冥王星在形成之初可能是非常热的。

10 . Pluto(冥王星) is a cold world far from us in the outer part of our solar system. But researchers believe Pluto may have been born as a much warmer place. They say it may even have sheltered(隐藏) a subsurface or underground ocean—one that still exists today.

A report on Pluto appeared in the scientific journal Nature Geosciences. The lead author was Carver Bierson, a planetary scientist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In the report, researchers pointed to evidence for a “hot start” situation at Pluto’s beginning, some 4.5 billion years ago.

Their study was based on images of the dwarf(矮小的) planet’s surface as well as computer models of the subsurface. “When Pluto was forming, new material would have been coming in and impacting its surface,” Bierson said. “Each impact is like an explosion that would warm the nearby area.” Bierson explained that if Pluto had formed slowly, the surface would have cooled between each impact and generally stayed very cold. But if Pluto had formed quickly, the surface may not have had time to cool down.

“If Pluto formed in less than 30,000 years, the heat from these impacts could have been sufficient to lead to an early ocean. Pluto may have an icy outer shell hundreds of kilometers thick on the top of an ocean of water, possibly mixed with salts and ammonia(氨). A solid rocky core could lie below,” Bierson said.

The researchers believe that parts of the ocean would gradually freeze over time. Water expands as it freezes, and cracks on Pluto’s surface may be evidence of this. At present, Pluto’s surface temperature is about minus 230 degrees Celsius.

A subsurface ocean could make Pluto a possible, although unlikely, candidate for having living organisms. Bierson said it was possible that contact between water and the rocky core could have created certain chemical elements. “Are those the right elements for life? We don’t know. We need to learn more about how life forms, or how life could form, to find these answers,” Bierson said.

1. According to Bierson, what may result in the underground ocean?
A.Something like an explosion.B.Long distance from the sun.
C.Salts mixed with ammonia.D.Low temperature.
2. Why are there many cracks on Pluto?
A.Life on it had made them.
B.Planets crashed billions of years ago.
C.Aliens from other planets created them.
D.There might be water and it expands when freezing.
3. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Pluto used to have life.
B.Pluto has living organisms.
C.Scientists are working to figure out the origin of life.
D.Chemicals created by water and rocky core are the right elements for life.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Pluto Was Born with a Universal Explosion
B.Pluto May Have Ever Started Out Very Hot
C.Pluto Lies at the Edge of the Solar System
D.Pluto Is a Cold World
