3 . With roaring ships, hammering oil drill, industrial fishing and coastal construction, humans have strongly influenced the underwater soundscape (声音景观) over the past couple of hundred years — in some cases posting a threat to whales, dolphins and other ocean creatures. Until recently, underwater sound pollution had not attracted the same attention. Now, a new paper published in the journal Science lays out the impacts, demonstrating that noise pollution can be just as harmful to the ocean environment as other kinds of pollution.
Even the cracking of glaciers and any drop of rain falling on the water’s surface can be heard deep under the sea. Sea life uses sound to study their habitat, and to keep in communication with each other. They also use sound by listening to know something about their environment.
“It’s a long-lasting problem that certainly weakens the animals all the way from individuals to populations,” says lead author Carlos M. Duarte, distinguished professor at Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), “We are hoping that this report will not only reveal elements of how humans impact the ocean through sound pollution, but that it will also bring the topic to the attention of policymakers who will be able to act based upon the very real solutions.”
Marine (海洋) ecologist Kirsten Thompson of the United Kingdom’s University of Exeter, who was not involved in the study, said the report could not have come at a better time. “It summarizes the fact that we are in this new phase of human-caused noise in our oceans that is having a dramatic impact on different species.” What matters most, she notes, is the fact that the paper “doesn’t just point at the problem, it shows how to solve it.”
Unlike plastic pollution or fertilizer runoff, noise pollution will not take years to fix. The moment we switch our noise off the impact disappears, Duarte says, pointing to marine life surveys conducted around April 5, 2020. Having the world use more renewable energy would lessen the need to drill for oil and gas. The international team of researchers also called for a global regulatory framework for measuring and managing ocean noise.

4 . Young people these days are exposed to an almost constant stream of written words. They communicate by web messages, or by Facebook updates, or by Tweets.
When I was a boy, in the 1980s, we communicated by telephone. I never wrote a single word to anybody my own age, except to pass notes in class when I was bored. The Internet and the mobile phone have changed all that, and put a new emphasis (强调) on the written word.
Written words are important now. Everything, especially for the young, depends on them. Online chatting and searching, messaging and emailing, all depend on writing, and writing quickly. There is no time now for thinking about the right phrase carefully or planning the best way to say something before you make that phone call, that text and that e-mail demanding an exigent response.
The important difference between writing and speaking is that writing can be crossed out (划掉), whereas speech cannot. Communication is now a continuous work in progress, as long as it’s done on screen, and as long as you delete it before anyone reads it. Instead of technology having made the accuracy of spelling and grammar irrelevant, the move from the spoken to the written word has had the opposite effect: we judge accuracy severely, whether it be a romantic message or a job application, and are unimpressed by people who don’t know how to use punctuation (标点符号).
Glancing around the Internet, you can find examples of terrible English, but you’ll also find an astonishing number of corrections.
There has probably never been a time in history when writing has been so universal (普遍) and so important. Books on the English language can now top the bestseller lists. Today, the Philippines holds the record for texting: 27 per user per day, In Scandinavia, more than 85 per cent of the population communicates by text, Some 294 billion e mail messages are sent every day. These are communications that until recently were made by telephone, letter, face to face or, and this is highly important in the communication debate, not at all.

6 . I'm ashamed to say that,as the years have gone by,I haven't taken the time to walk around my neighborhood. Sure.I'm out and about all the time but always in the car to my way out of the neighborhood.
The main reason is that I don't love my neighborhood anymore.I'm referring to the place, not the people. My street used to come to an end in a forest. We would walk the dogs in the forest that always had nice, seasonal flowers and shrubs(灌木)coming up all year round. Now it's gone and been replaced(取代)by a forest of high-rise buildings.
Pretty down because of some annoying( 频人 的) office work these days.I decided I just had to get out and walk today. It started at the building "forest". I still felt pain in my heart from the sight and I missed those days of walking the dog and taking in the beauty of the trees and shrubs and flowers.
As I continued on, though.I came across this. .
Some very artistic children created some lovely, colorful artwork and I couldn't help but think they must have been trying to make me and everyone else just feel better. It certainly worked on me. Thank you, thoughtful artists!
At one point,I saw a man walking across one of the wider, busier streets. I shouted,"I just wanted to say hi to someone!" He answered, looking very friendly and happy, smiling and waving(挥手).
As I walked near the last couple of streets of my walk, the winds began to blow. There were dark clouds behind me so I decided to head home. Luckily, the rain didn't come down until I was resting on the sofa.""
I was glad I went out.

8 . Clothing decorated with lucky animals such as Chinese dragons and phoenixes (凤凰), and designers devoted to making China's Olympians look good, all these reflect that the Chinese Olympic Team is not only focused on winning medals, but also showing the beauty of China to the world.
The first impressive moment for Chinese fashion started from the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The Chinese team's uniforms used red as a main color, which represents wishes for a good start for Team China. The Team's uniforms, combining red with white, were designed by a group of designers from the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. The uniforms are decorated with a peony (牡丹), which is China's national flower, and the style of the flower was inspired by an ancient Ming Dynasty bowl at the Palace Museum.
Some Chinese gymnastics' uniforms also use the traditional Chinese symbols such as the Chinese phoenix. China's trampoline (蹦床) gold medalist Zhu Xueying said she was pleased with her uniform that looked like a traditional qipao decorated with a phoenix. The bright red uniforms have traditional elements (元素) on the neckline—a qipao knot (结) and a Chinese phoenix. The pattern on the front of the chest represented the hope that the gymnasts would dance in the sky.
The uniform for Chen Meng, another gold medalist in the women's table tennis event, was designed especially for her. The uniform is pink because that is Chen's favorite color and the designers embroidered (刺绣) a Chinese dragon on her right shoulder to represent the hope that she can take off like a powerful dragon.
“I have been watching the Olympics. The uniforms for the Chinese team have added many fashionable elements,” Zhang Yan, a young Chinese designer told the reporter. The most impressive uniforms for him have been those that the Chinese athletes wore on the podiums (领奖台). The elements formed in the clothing designs, including the curving shapes, the colors and the Chinese standing collar, make them both beautiful and practical. “When the athletes stand on the podium, I think the Chinese design is not only attractive, but also a kind of new fashion. The confidence shown in the clothing is really strong.” Zhang Yan said.

9 . As a student of International Relations and Chinese, I have been living in China for the past three years. Tibet was a region I was eager to travel to but its remoteness and my inability to find the right time to go delayed my journey. After a few e-mails back and forth with my dad in the UK, who doubted my choice, we decided to take a pause in our lives to begin our journey early in the morning of July 3rd.
We started our journey on Saturday morning at the Guangzhou train station. It was a good thing that we had secured a couple of soft seats as we were about to begin the journey. We started the first part of the journey, admiring the mysterious mountains of south China. The next day it changed quite suddenly to the dry landscape of central-west China as we passed through Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces. That evening we arrived in Qinghai Province, where we hoped for the Xining-Lhasa train.
We were greeted on the train with Tibetan yogurt. The following afternoon we arrived in Lhasa. Later that day, we started our journey to the Qomolangma base camp by road from Lhasa. Along the way we stopped to admire the beautiful and large river, the beautiful clouds and huge freshwater lake that is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. All the beauty contributed to making a picturesque countryside Tibet.
About a week later, we arrived at the Qo olangma basecamp in the afternoon. We were staying in a guesthouse just next to the basecamp and then we headed straight outside to see the wonderful Mt Qomolangma. The tip of the mountain could be seen through clouds, astonishing us with its unbelievable height and wonderful scenery. The clouds cleared away and we watched the sunset over the top of the mountain. Each of us was really impressed by Mt Qomolangma’s magnificence (壮丽) .

10 . My first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, I saw that Mr.Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom.Walking up to my table, my heart sang.“It would be great to sit there.I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.
A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr.Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His deskmate Josh couldn’t understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr.Brown, “I don’t want to sit with this strange guy.Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”
Mr.Brown didn’t answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic(患自闭症的)kids. He explained that autistic kids have little self-control.They seem to do things that are beyond(超出)everyone else`s understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs.“He can sing thousands of songs. What's more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.” In the end, Mr.Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.
