文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何在新学校交朋友。

1 . How to Make Friends at a New School

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes.     1     However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Be yourself

2     If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

    3

Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

Believe in yourself

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people.     4     Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from.

Remember people’s names

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people.     5     Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname. You’d be surprised how often this may come in handy.

A.Be friendly to others.
B.Making new friends can be hard, too.
C.Join after-school activities like
D.Never change what you are to try and fit in.
E.If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi”.
F.People may become angry if you just begin by saying ”Hey“ each time.
G.Don ‘t sit at the back of the classroom where other people don’t notice you!

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者小时候和父亲去海滩的遭遇使作者开始害怕水,直到自己游过温特沃思湖时,才克服对水的恐惧的经历。

3 . At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe.

I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.

The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on one side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, how’d you like to be ducked?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end.I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits—when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.

When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.

I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by.It deprived(剥夺) me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not .Sometimes the terror would return.

This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Went worth.Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr Terror, what do you think you can do to me?” I had conquered my fear of water.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,简要列举了几条如何在课堂上保持注意力集中的建议。

4 . How to stay focused in class

Being relaxed during class is a bad habit, and it is also bad to your grade. Focusing in class not only proves to teachers that you are a capable student but also shows that you have the ability to control yourself, which will be very important.

1     . No matter how much you want to sit with your friends during the class, try your best to avoid them. Talking with friends around you is not going to give you the focus in class. This will get you into trouble.

Look at teacher and make eye contact. Your teacher is not just standing up there talking.     2    .Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention by looking them in the eye. This person should have your full attention at all times during class.

Take notes. By taking notes, you’ll be able to “get into” the lesson. Write down key points as your teacher speaks. And listen to the key phrases such as “This is important” “This is the main idea” “This will be the test” etc.     3    .

Get involved in class discussions. This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it.     4    .These show the teacher that you are listening carefully during the class.

Ask a question.     5    .This really shows your teacher that you want to be better, and can recognize the things you are having difficulty with. Chances are that someone else in the class has the same question (and was too afraid to ask!). They’ll be relieved, and so will you.

A.Avoid sitting with friends.
B.This can help you listen more attentively.
C.If he or she ask for an opinion, share your own.
D.He or she is trying to give you a good education.
E.Talking with friends will make you lose interest in class.
F.If you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask.
G.The more quickly you answer, the more attention you pay.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了中国古老的“食补”习俗。

5 . Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.

Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) chicken soup every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.

The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

1. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
2. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.
C.Sesame oil chicken soup.D.Fish soup.
3. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Medicine.B.Restaurant.C.Manufacture.D.Agriculture.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Charm of Chinese CuisineB.The Popularity of Tonic Food
C.An Introduction of Chinese Tonic FoodD.Differences Between “Hot” Food and “Cold” Food

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。我们的眼睛会“说话”,要根据不同的关系和情况进行适当的眼神交流。

6 . Eyes can speak

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.     1    In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he senses that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.     2    Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive.     3    If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.

However, when two people are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking.     4    If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.     5

Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationships and situations.

A.That’s what normal eye contact is all about.
B.But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex
C.Therefore, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.
D.On the contrary, it will give him away.
E.After all, nobody likes to be stared at for quite a long time.
F.Do you have such kind of experience?
G.If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者帮助祖父整理家族谱系,从中慢慢了解到自己家族的故事,也更深刻理解了家人的含义。

7 . One summer during high school, my mom volunteered me to help Grandpa research our family tree. It’s terrible to imagine hours spent dusting boxes and listening to boring stories about people I didn’t know. “You’ll be surprised,” my mom promised. “Family history can be very interesting.”

In truth, Grandpa didn’t want to limit(限定) my work to just research, hoping to also keep our family memories. He’d discovered a computer program that helped digitally scan(扫描) old pictures and letters to maintain their contents before they crumble from age. Grandpa wanted me to help him connect the scanner and set up the computer program. He could type documents and send emails, but had never used a scanner.

Soon after, I became interested my relatives’ lives. I asked Grandpa to tell the story behind every picture and letter we scanned. The stories, which turned out not to be boring at all, helped me not only understand but also relate to my relatives. I became so eager for more information that Grandpa needed additional props(道具) to keep me satisfied. He showed me a chest filled with random stuff, all covered in dust.

Looking through their belongings, I felt I was opening a window to the world of my relatives, a world long since gone. Grandpa showed me letters he had sent to Grandma from the front line of World War II and I could almost smell the gunpowder. I turned the pages of my great-grandmother’s recipe book and could picture her cooking in her kitchen. All of the people who had been only names to me now had faces to match.

Later, Grandpa admitted, “I probably could have done this project myself. I just wanted someone to share it with.” I can’t thank him enough for sharing the experience and making me appreciate the family members who have made me who I am.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者一个偶然的机会开始拉中提琴,感受到古典音乐对我们的情感带来的好处,并把它看作一生最诚挚的朋友的故事。

9 . I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.

Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.

Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.

Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “ viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers (算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.

1. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first and second paragraphs?
A.To introduce an interesting musical class.
B.To offer the evidence of her gift for music.
C.To show the importance of proper guide.
D.To tell the power of support from parents.
2. According to the passage, in what way does classical music help the author?
A.By developing social skills.B.By improving mental health.
C.By broadening life experience.D.By building close relationship.
3. What does the underlined word “gullible” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Easily tricked.B.Firmly loved.
C.Greatly challenged.D.Secretly hidden.
4. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.Special event, sweet memory.B.Classical music, endless friendship
C.Lifetime dream, great effort.D.Happy childhood, unforgotten experience.
