1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Oliver was a small and introvert (内向的) boy who kept to himself. He was quiet and preferred indoor activities. Sitting in the corner of the class, he was very much a loner.

At the beginning of the semester, Oliver had a new classmate, Alan, who had just returned to England. Alan was assigned a seat next to Oliver. To his surprise, within weeks, he became good friends with Alan even though they were poles apart in personality. Alan was popular, outspoken and artistic. “Alan is all that I want to be,” Oliver thought to himself. He began listening to the music Alan listened to and having similar haircut. He even quit his drama club and started playing the online games that Alan played. He seemed to have been out of his loneliness.

It was not long before Oliver was introduced to Alan’s “cool” friends. He told himself that he would try all means to be part of the group. He would follow them to the football games and join the art club after school so he could spend more time hanging out with them. Oliver followed them around laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions—most enthusiastically at the ones he disagreed with. He did not dare to differ in opinions as he would not want them to think badly of him. This continued for several months. At last, Oliver felt relieved that he had finally fitted in.

One day, Oliver overheard Alan and his cool friends talking. “Oliver is such a loser,” one boy commented in a playful tone. “He just follows you around trying to be you. He copies you; he does not have a personality of his own!” another boy exclaimed. Alan laughed, to make matters worse, he added, “That fellow wears me out. I wish he would leave me alone. He thinks we are best friends. A thorough fool!”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel (吵架) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”

On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一种基于摄像头和人工智能的技术,可以识别老鹰和其他鸟类,以减少风力发电的涡轮机对它们造成的威胁。

5 . Wind power is one of the most powerful tools for reducing carbon emissions(排放) that cause climate change. Turbines(涡轮机), however, can be a threat to birds, which is why experts are looking for ways to prevent the danger.

A Boulder, Colorado company has produced a camera- and AI-based technology that can recognize eagles as they approach in enough time to shut off turbines in their flight path. Their tool, called IdentiFlight, can detect 5.62 times more bird flights than human observers alone with an accuracy rate of 94 percent. Using high-precision sensors, the system calculates a bird’s speed and flight path, and if it is on a crash path with a turbine, a signal is sent to shut that turbine down.

Winning an award for its performance in Australia, the tracking system was set up in 2018 at a Tasmanian facility and was found to cut eagle deaths at the Cattle Hill Wind Farm by more than four fifths. Each day, signals have shut down their movement an average of 400 times—across the field of 48 turbines—for 2 to 3 minutes each time.

Across the globe, Duke Energy in Wyoming is employing the same technology with impressive results at its Top of the World Windpower Project. Top of the World was the first wind site to use the technology. In 2014, IdentiFlight’s maker, Boulder Imaging, used Top of the World for testing after eagles were killed by the turbine, which left Duke Energy in violation(违反) of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. 47 units made of eight wide-angle cameras now constantly scan(扫掠) the sky to monitor all 110 turbines. The camera unit is mounted to the top of a 30-foot pole and powered by software that learns and improves with each photo taken.

Bird lover Garry George admits, “IdentiFlight makes it possible to protect the birds we love in the process of reducing the worst effects of climate change.”

1. What can IdentiFlight do?
A.Ensure turbines make full use of wind power.
B.Suspend wind turbines when detecting eagles.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述纽约动物园一只猫头鹰逃跑并为市民所接受的故事。

8 . An owl (猫头鹰) named Flaco escaped New York’s Central Park Zoo last week after his cage was broken. This set off a bird-hunt of police officers and park rangers (护林员). Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild. They placed some of his favorite treats in the open air to attempt to trap him.

Flaco was not fooled. Instead, he was sighted flying over5th Avenue, and Central Park’s skating rink. A number of New Yorkers came into Central Park to try to catch a glimpse of Flaco, taking photos with excitement.

But this week, zoo officials announced they accepted that Flaco remained in Central Park because he had been seen bringing up bones and fur from the park’s community of rats. “He has been very successful at hunting and consuming lots of rats in the park.” zoo officials told the New York Post.“ And that’s amazing. He’s hunting on his own. He’s flying better. Flaceo really seems to be enjoying himself out there.”

There is a caution attached to this story of an owl who is making it on his own in the city that never sleeps. Owls are nocturnal. They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of people who work the overnight shift. Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.

1. Why were zoo officials concerned about Flaco’s ability to survive?
A.Because his favourite food was too little.B.Because he might be attacked by police.
C.Because his cage was severely damaged.D.Because he was kept in his cage for long.
2. What can we infer about Flaco from the third paragraph?
A.He has adapted to the wild.B.He has found his previous home.
C.He still faces great challenges.D.He dislikes the rats in the park.
3. What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Scary-looking.B.Shy and quiet.
C.Active at night.D.Badly-behaved.
4. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the interruption to Flaco’s sleep?
A.Cautious.B.Favorable.C.Unclear.D.Disapproving.

文章大意:本文是篇说明文。文章通过科研团队对小丑鱼和小热带鱼的实验和研究,说明了海洋酸化正在搅乱海洋生物的思维,对它们产生了较大的影响。

9 . Clown fish live their adult lives in the protective arms of sea anemones, the small brightly colored sea animals. Between birth and adulthood, however, the fish have to complete a treacherous journey. After hatching, they swim out to the open sea to finish developing. After maturing, the young fish swim back, during which they have to avoid a “wall of mouths” by sensing the unfriendly smells. With ocean acidification, a trend that is occurring worldwide, scientists began to wonder what might happen to fish’s sense of smell.

My team put 300 recently hatched clown fish in our lab. When we introduced a friendly fish odor (气味), they did not react. But when we introduced an enemy odor, they swam away. We then repeated the experiment with 300 new hatchlings from the same parents in the more acidic water—a level by 2100 if current trends continue. When we introduced friendly and unfriendly smells at the same time, the fish seemed unable to determine, spending equal time swimming toward one smell and the other. They could sense chemical signals but couldn’t recognize the meaning of them.

It is always tricky to say that behaviors in a lab would also be seen in the wild. So we continued to test how wild-caught damselfish would react to enemy smells after exposing them to acidic water. In a tank, about half of them held in water with acidity expected by 2050 were attracted to the unfriendly odor and half were not, yet not one held in water anticipated by 2100 avoided being attracted to the enemy odor. The marked damselfish once held in the most acidic water swam farther away from their protective home.

Can fish adapt? Most studies have habituated fish to lifted acidic conditions over a few days or months. Yet some scientists thought that fish might escape the anger of ocean acidification, in part because early research showed that certain animals had an astonishing ability to regulate their internal chemistry to survive acidified water. But maintaining normal functions such as avoiding danger is a different challenge.

Further, if many ocean creatures start to behave strangely, entire food webs and ecosystems could come crashing down. Although the science is still new, the results appear to be lining up: ocean acidification is messing with fish’s minds.

1. What does the underlined word “treacherous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Risky.B.Hurried.C.Mysterious.D.Helpless.
2. What can we learn about the fish in the acidic water?
A.They lost their senses to chemical signals.
B.They were less likely to respond to threats.
C.Their behavior in the lab disappeared in the wild.
D.They tended to seek the protection from their home.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The author’s study confirms previous findings.
B.Fish’s adaptation to acidic water is a matter of time.
C.Different fishes behave differently to acidity change.
D.The chances of restoring fish’s minds are yet to be seen.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.What Do Different Stressors Do to Ocean Creatures?
B.What Does Ocean Acidity Mean to Ocean Creatures?
C.How Does Ocean Acidification Destroy the Ecosystem?
D.How Do Ocean Creatures Adapt to Ocean Acidification?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了德国青年吴名学习中医的经历以及他对中医文化的热爱。

10 . Wu Ming is a young German born after 1995. Wu, a big fan of Chinese culture, has been learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 2016. Now he’s studying for his master degree at Henan University of Chinese Medicine.

As he thought some diseases can’t be treated completely with Western medicine, he decided to dig into TCM. Wu came to Central China’s Hénan Province in 2015, where TCM culture can be enjoyed because Henan Province is the hometown of Zhang Zhongjing, the medical sage (圣人) of ancient China. After one year of learning the Chinese language, he started to learn Chinese medicine.

In the early stages, Wu always tasted some Chinese herbal medicine by himself. He also tried his best to learn and practise Chinese, especially the Henan dialect, as his teachers, schoolmates, and even some patients speak the Henan dialect in their daily conversations.

Studying TCM made a difference to Wu’s life. He used to be crazy about electronic products and stay up late every night, and he was trapped in (陷入) the fast-paced but unhealthy daily life. But now, he lives a balanced and peaceful life, practising good habits like drinking tea, as well as reading ancient books.

Wu also uses what he has learned to help his family. With acupuncture (针灸), various physical disorders of his family have been well treated. Now, he always provides his family members with some advice about staying fit after he checks their skin or tongues online. Over time, his family begin to understand his love for TCM.

In Wu’s opinion, there’s no big difference between China and Western countries. “We are the same. Misunderstanding comes from being out of touch,” said Wu. He plans to run a traditional Chinese clinic (诊所) in Germany after graduation, which could serve as a bridge between the two countries and publicize TCM and its culture.

1. What did Wu Ming begin with as soon as he got to Henan Province?
A.Visiting places of interest.
B.Practising speaking Chinese.
C.Learning about Zhang Zhongjing.
D.Tasting herbal medicine in person.
2. How did studying TCM influence Wu?
A.It changed his lifestyle.
B.It made him stay up late.
C.It made him fond of reading.
D.It quickened the speed of his life.
3. What do we know about Wu according to Paragraph 5?
A.He teaches himself acupuncture.
B.He often gives strangers good advice.
C.He can put what he has learned into practise.
D.He has made his family fall in love with TCM.
4. Why does Wu plan to run a traditional Chinese Clinic in Germany?
A.To help more patients get treated.
B.To meet his family members’ expectations.
C.To combine Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
D.To make more Germans learn about TCM and its culture.
