Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city.When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. Good friendship has many benefits. It offers companionship, improves self-worth and promotes good health. There are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our jobs or schools. Such changes often leave us without a friend.
1. Associate with others.
The first step to making friends is associating with other people. You can go to public places to meet new people. Besides, you will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member of such places.
2. Start a conversation.
Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends.

Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together. Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.
4. Let it grow.
It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.

Mary frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from New York, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
“Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in New York. What should I do now?” Mary grumbled (抱怨), mostly to herself.
“What’s that?” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots. “Nothing,” Mary mumbled (嘟哝). The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were then too busy to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed that the students hadn’t even noticed her. Mary sighed and got back to wash dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Mary’s parents were busy the whole day, welcoming customers into the restaurant, which was brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mary was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mary’s age. As she filled their glasses, Mary realized the twins were in her class. Mary ducked her head down. Her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
A few minutes later, Mary’s mother found her in the kitchen. “Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers.”

“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.

The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office.

There were once two boys who were very good friends. Their names were Arman and Batoor. Arman and Batoor would always play together after school on the basketball court close to where they lived.
One day, two bullies came to the basketball court, and one of the bullies stole their basketball. “This is ours now,” said a bully.
“And you are never getting it back,” said the other bully.
Then the bullies started pushing the two boys and Arman fell down and suddenly became very frightened. Without thinking, the young boy jumped to his feet and ran home without once looking back to see if his friend Batoor was also able to run away.
But Batoor was not so lucky, and anyway, he did not like being bullied and refused to run away. But the boys were bigger and stronger than Batoor and they hit him and kicked him.
“That will teach you,” said the bullies. And with that, the bullies walked away, leaving poor Batoor to walk home alone.
The next day, when Arman met Batoor in the playground at school, he was very sorry when he saw what the bullies had done to his good friend.
“I cannot believe you ran away and left me all alone!” said Batoor. “What kind of a friend acts like that?” Although Arman tried to apologise, Batoor was very angry and did not want to forgive his friend.
Arman felt terrible about running away, and now he had lost his best friend because of his actions.
Batoor’s mother bought him a new basketball, and because the boy decided not to have his life ruled over by bullies, he returned to the basketball court the following day and played alone.
Just as he was practising, he heard a voice behind him.
“I see we are going to have to teach you another lesson,” said the voice. “And I see that you have another basketball for us to take,” said the other.
And when Batoor turned around, sure enough, the two bullies were walking towards him. “Now hand over that basketball and we won’t beat you so badly this time.”
Just as Batoor was about to protest, another voice rang out loud and clear across the basketball court.

8 . In 2017, besides a full-time job, I also coached two basketball teams. We just intentionally created family time to connect with each other.
One day when I finished a playhouse for the kids, three-year-old Matthew came and asked to help. “Sorry, kid, but I’m all done,” I replied. “Oh no...”cried Matthew. Now, any three-year-old crying after missing a project with their dad would be sweet. Crying Matthew looked like a newborn cat, melting a heart of stone. But what could I do? The result was a pleased little boy whose heart was full. What I saw was two pieces of junk wood. What he saw was the connection with his father. He saw companionship, priority (优先权), worth and a place to belong to.
Parents always think, “I’ll create family time next Saturday.” But you don’t always have to do big things to fill children’s hearts. In fact the simple act of being present means the world to little hearts. Look at that face! Those are the eyes of a little one who received nothing. And everything.

When school was over, the students were informed that there was no school on Monday-the Labor Day. “Enjoy your extra day off,” said the teacher. An extra day of fun suited Flora just fine. This was a holiday, a day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Flora rubbed her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Flora, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on,” said Flora’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Flora asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Flora. It is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place.”
